2024-05-28 23:47:35 +0000 UTCI saw the Polites part and then the switch in 'Monster' differently- there's a melancholic feel to Polites' singing here. That along with the fact that every time Odysseus has chosen to follow 'Open Arms' something has gone wrong, I saw it more as Jorge using this part as a 'farewell' to 'Open Arms'. Because at some point, there is only so far someone else's beliefs can take us, especially when they are so against one's typical core beliefs. While the tired War Veteran Odysseus longs for peace, right now he is still in the midst of battle and conflict. So, like any captain or soldier does, he has to keep fighting and killing whoever stands in their way, no matter who that person may be, all to win the war and return home. Though Polites' ideals are strong and true, they're ideals that better fit peacetime rather than a 'battle' like this. Even more, 'Open Arms' is not Odysseus' natural state of being; in a way he's going completely against his typical cynical nature and experimenting when it is nowhere near safe enough to do so. I see Monster as him taking in all of this alongside what Tiresias said and realizing that they(that he) can't continue on as they have been and must instead become brutal soldiers once again. But I think that's what the message of the Odyssey is- it's the story of a War General and a soldier, not a civilian. So, while we may wish for something different, something filled with healing and recovery, that is not logically viable right now. Monster is just Odysseus coming to that realization himself and making the change that is needed in order for them to finally succeed.
