Not so fun fact! In the mythology it’s a venomous snake that bites Eurydice and kills her, so the start with the rattlesnakes is extra double meaning

2024-09-23 18:20:40 +0000 UTCI definitely recommend checking out live recordings after you're done. Eva (Eurydice) shows off so much of her vocal power in the live show. Ike she's amazing on the soundtrack, but the recordings are on a different level. ESPECIALLY for a song in act 2 called Flowers.

2024-09-21 17:56:26 +0000 UTCI can see why the second video was chosen, as it flows better and incorporates that last piece of animatic, but I wish they had used the one the first artist did for When The Chips Are Down as I think it showcases better than Eurydices is not a casualty of winter and that it IS her choice to go to Hadestown. That's made very clear in the love action I have seen (the London West End one, I went to both the first cast and on the first night the new cast members where switched in) with the token and Eurydices handing it to Hermes as a train-boarding access token.

2024-09-20 16:11:57 +0000 UTCYeah I like that with the miners and their canaries, also right?! Plus Eurylochus is literally the voice of the crew his job is protect and be their voice to the captain

2024-09-20 06:09:20 +0000 UTC"I know how this story goes but if I wish really hard maybe it won't happen" Oh hey! That's the entire point of the musical lol

2024-09-19 04:02:21 +0000 UTCOne thing I like about the mine canaries is that the miners felt so bad, the box they kept in them came with a way to seal out the outside air and blow in clean air to revive them. If you like musical covers you should check out RafScraps version. It's so good. It's so good. I completely agree with you about Eurylochus. Poor man gets so much hate. I mean, even without the hunger he's the one representing the common man, those without Athena to call upon or her training to fall on. He's a soldier, he does a soldier does. And he tries so hard throughout, but he'd just a man.

2024-09-17 03:04:22 +0000 UTCAlso the “when the chips are down” starting with the sound of rattlesnakes, also the sound of when you shake dice like when you gamble. When you put your chips down you’re ready to bet or take a risk. So “people get mean when the chips are down”/ people get on edge when they’re backed against a cliff. Plus the fates talking about doing what’s best for you even if it means taking down those around you “now that the chips are down”. Idk I’m kinda talking out of my ass but I thought it was cool.

2024-09-15 19:15:04 +0000 UTCYou’re the first person I’ve seen make the canary in the mines connection!

2024-09-12 14:47:13 +0000 UTCI just (literally this is day 2) moved alone abroad, away from my family and friends and I have been having a really hard time already missing them and thinking I've made a huge mistake. So this morning i decided to take it a bit slow, make some familiar food and watch something nice. Just last week i was in my room with my mom enjoying your videos and now i am 3000 km away from her watching this in a new room alone. I barely got thru the first 5 seconds without crying. I'll be strong and try my best. But for now I'll watch one of my favourite content creators react to something I love. I'll bring some familiarity in this new and scary place.

2024-09-11 06:42:59 +0000 UTCDid you know miners developed little oxygen chambers to put their canaries in to save their lives if they fell unconscious from low oxygen and saved the miners' lives? It's true! The miners treasured their little canaries, they may die anyway but the miners would try to save them if they could. ...this is unrelated to anything but the mention of the imagery but I love that about us as a species and think it's very sweet.

2024-09-10 23:51:34 +0000 UTCSo OBVIOUSLY no hate to them but I do kinda disagree on depicting Eurydice as freezing to death in the cold when the musical puts in so much effort to show it was an inevitable *choice*, not an unexpected *accident* The effect on her life may be the same but it's supposed to make you conscious of what world circumstances forced her into this

2024-09-10 21:39:00 +0000 UTCAlso fun thing in “hey little songbird,” around the 3 minute mark Hades’ shadow over Eurydice is shaped like a coffin. I love what animators do in all of these animatics to add to the songs, especially little details like this and the initials carved in the tree that are clawed through

2024-09-10 18:11:29 +0000 UTCIf you like “hey little songbird” I NEED y’all to listen to the female version on RafScrap’s page on YouTube. I have never been more attracted to women in my life istg

2024-09-10 18:08:30 +0000 UTCand thats how she originally died.

2024-09-10 17:36:24 +0000 UTCfun fact! in the original myth, eurydice was bitten by a rattlesnake on orpheus and eurydice’s wedding day :)

2024-09-10 17:36:10 +0000 UTCThere was behind the scenes Broadway footage and they had this bit where they’d throw bags of chips at each other and be like “when the chips are down” which just lives so rent free haha. Loving this reaction so much!!

2024-09-10 16:47:38 +0000 UTCSomething I remember is that they figured out how to attach oxygen machines to them so on the way out the bird had air
Phoenix Mackenzie
2024-09-10 15:47:18 +0000 UTCLove the reaction as always. Slightly heartwarming fact, by most accounts the miners loved those birds. They even had little resuscitation machines for them. It makes sense though, imagine you’re down in the dark and there’s this beautiful little bird that sings to you as you work, it would break your heart if it died. They still died sometimes but it wasn’t a callous or heartless thing, just a painful choice that nobody liked.

2024-09-10 13:32:15 +0000 UTCIt’s very interesting to read others’ comments here - their details & observations expand my understanding. Mortius, you give voice to my feelings. Thank you all.

2024-09-10 13:04:20 +0000 UTCYes, I love that Eurydice has her own character and agency in Hadestown, given that in the original myth she comes off as sort of the Ur-example of a Fridged Woman, there to serve Orpheus's character and little else.

2024-09-10 12:37:59 +0000 UTCOmigod omigod I was debating whether to comment this. It's worth reacting to (once you finish the musical) and I recommend [2nd act song title redacted in case it's spoilery] especially! The composer of Hadestown sings the first half, Eva Noblezada sings the second half, and Eva gives an entire (and genuinely moving) performance with just her face and her voice in this tiny li'l bookshop.

2024-09-10 06:36:44 +0000 UTCNot to spam the comments but there is a tiny desk performance by the broadway cast of some of the most popular songs of hadestown that you might wanna check out (it's a really fun time to watch and the composer explains the story a bit)

2024-09-10 05:43:25 +0000 UTCTwo other interesting little details: the sound of the rattlesnake you hear at the start When the Chips are down is diegetic; Hades is shaking the coins Eurydice uses as her ticket in his hand as a taunt. This is more obvious when it repeats at the end of Gone, I'm Gone. And second, when the Fates begin their verse at the end of Gone I'm Gone, they actually pull down mourning veils. And yes "Go away Fates, no one cares Fates" is something I repeated frequently the fist few times I listened to this. I'm petty like that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2024-09-10 05:38:10 +0000 UTCI am always so amazed by the imagery hadestown creates. Hades in chant singing about looking for someone who would appreciate a gilded cage, immediately followed by hey little songbird where he tells eurydice she would be his canary !!!! Its just fantastic!!!

2024-09-10 05:35:46 +0000 UTCSo, if you're unfamiliar with the finer details of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth then, an important note is that Eurydice in the myth originally dies from a snakebite. Which is why its "Songbird vs Rattlesnake" and why I mentioned on an earlier video that Hades has snakeskin boots when I went over his outfit. Just, yknow, a little detail. For fun.

2024-09-10 05:30:37 +0000 UTCThis is such a fun reaction. I know you were nervous and it is emotional, but your reactions had me laughing multiple times... I hope that's not awful, me like laughing at your... Pain?? Idk. What I'm saying is I liked this video 😅

2024-09-10 05:23:55 +0000 UTCWhen he talks about "vipers and vultures around ya" who will "take you down, pick you clean, (deng deng denggg...)", the three Fates who have been subtly emoting during his song pose like predators, ready to swoop in on Eurydice. Something that the animatics blur a bit is the role of the Fates - they don't act on the world with their own agency, not really. They're more here to show the environment doing what it will to the main characters (like stealing Eurydice's coat and satchel in the winter storm) and to give voice to the conflicts in their heads. Like "they were fated (get it get it) to do this," very Greek tragedy-esque. To that point - I love that Hadestown presents Eurydice's death not as a random happenstance, but as a choice: to give up hope, to surrender to death as a kind of comfort/satiety after freezing and starving without aid. It gives her character an arc that wouldn't otherwise be there.

2024-09-10 05:21:00 +0000 UTCHades' offer is a little less Davy Jones, and more suicidal ideation--suggesting Eurydice give up the constant struggle that life has been for her, and that there's something better for her in Hadestown. And telling the Fates to shut up--easier said than done. Remember, they're 'always singing in the back of your mind'--and they never sing anything a character's not *already* thinking.
