All I’ve Ever Known + Way down | Hadestown Reaction

Mortius stop judging an entire character based on their voice actor challenge: impossible difficulty

Comments

There is a whole proshot of this cast coming. They are currently on the West End and will be filming.

Amanda Caudle

Mortius hearing Hades for the first time: oh no Me: oh yeah Also fun fact, in the live recording (which remains my favorite version of the musical) Hades gets the "all aboard! 1,2, 1,2,3,4!" Line and it just sounds so good oh my god

D. Sparrow

Persephone: that was not six months Mortius: so that was six months 🤣🤣

Yep - that is everyone's reaction to Hades 😂 Patrick Page, who was also Frollo in the stage Hunchback, alas. Essentially, Persephone doesn't control when she comes and goes - Hades does. So if he wants to keep her down there longer and pick her up early... she's forced to cooperate - which also puts the human world and it's seasons all out of wack and screws with their crops. He's very much the 'mine owner' type figure in this on top of the Lord of the Dead - because by ruling the 'underground', he also rules over anything that COMES from the underground. and by doing so he's found a way to lure humans into servitude for the promise of a better life than they're dealing with the draught he's semi-unwittingly created by being greedy with his wife's time.

Kristina (LadyGreensleeves33)

The coins serve a really clever double-duty, iconographically. They represent Hades as the god of wealth and mining, but they also hint at the coins placed over the eyes or in the mouth of the dead in classical cultures. So they serve to represent both of Hades's main functions simultaneously.

SK Elkins

The comment about the coins has to do with the fact that part of being god of the underworld means that Hades is also the god of earthborn wealth. So precious minerals and jewels are also part of his domain.

That second part would have been spoilers if he hadn't done it in multiple

A version I saw was wonderful for the way it was acted out during the "Makes you kinda wonder how it feels," line. Everyone stops and stares at Eurydice, including Hades, who slides down his sunglasses to look over the rim at her, and *winks.* Eurydice is swaying forward, leaning towards him, leaning into his charm, and the two lock gazes and hold it for that pause. Orpheus has to move forward and reach out to tug Eurydice back and away from Hades, breaking the moment of tension. Absolutely rich silver fox charming the young starveling. But I love the way Hades as King of the Underworld is portrayed in Hadestown: the king of a mining town, an oil and coal baron, the owner of all the ore and gem mines. All that power and control, and all the riches that come with it, and all the souls to work endlessly for him. I could say more but I won't because spoilers!

Kitty

"Say that you'll hold me forever..." Onstage, in the instrumental bridge, they share a very intimate moment and are breathing next to each other, staring up at the stars, when Eurydice suddenly sits up, draws up her knees, and hugs herself, fearful. Then she sings this line. You had the interpretation 100% right ❤️

Bean of Glory

My life is better for hearing your friend's description. Thank you for sharing it XD ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Bean of Glory

Do remember where the word 'Plutocrat' comes from! Hadestown's version of Hades has a lot of Roman influence. He's a very Plutonic Hades, drawing heavily on the Roman emphasis on the god of the underworld as not only the god of the dead, but also the god of all mined things and of *wealth.* There's quite a bit of Roman influence in the show's depiction of Persephone as well. The Persephone-oriented mystery cults of the late Roman Empire often had a highly Dionysian aspect to them (both literally and colloquially!) They often made use of opium or opium-laced wine in their rituals. Persephone was not only a seasonal goddess, and not only a chthonic goddess of the dead and the underworld, but also a goddess of pain relief and sedation. Her iconography in a lot of the surviving art from that period very specifically associates her (as well as her mother Demeter) with the opium poppy.

SK Elkins

you must look up a picture of the actor on stage so you can see his out mmmmm would

Lance Ivy

Just jumping in to say “hell yes” to the sleeve garters and waistcoat look he has later and that Patrick Page just ROCKS.

Andrea Hunt

In which Mortius and are the same - absolutely MELTING for Patrick Page’s voice.

Andrea Hunt

Literally what I've been waiting for for WEEKS. A friend of mine saw Patrick Page on Broadway and described his voice live like a tiger growling into a cello. It was the perfect description.

Anon E. Mouse

Not sure if this will help, but the way this is staged is as a New Orleans Jazz funeral with Hermes leading the procession to the train station. Hence the people dancing and smiling and singing. Way Down Hadestown is Persephone's funeral (the dead of summer to winter)

Anon E. Mouse

You're correct. Eury says she a Hasn't seen a spring or fall means that Persephone has been in Hadestown longer and longer, so the seasons have been going straight from summer into winter because Hades keeps dropping her off later (She's never early always late) And picking her up early ("these days she never stays too long...")

Anon E. Mouse

The lyric is: "Winter's nigh and summer's o're Hear that high and lonesome sound Of my husband coming fore To take me home to Hadestown Way down Hadestown, way down under the ground"

Anon E. Mouse

Even with Hermes leading the parade with the traditional funeral umbrella. It's so amazing!

Lauren Groen

While Epic tries to play Greek Mythology very straight, Hadestown is giving you this story through the lense of Hades being the boss of a sort of Mining town that takes advantage of its workers. Once again the aesthetic, stage design, and costuming do a lot of heavy lifting here that isn't always represented the same in animatics. (Not that animators are required to show the same visuals, it's their unique vision! 💕 Just that if you are getting your first taste of the musical through animatics it's not always as clear.)

Lauren Groen

First, the song is called “Way Down Hadestown”. Second, to explain the lines about all of the money coming from Hadestown: in this version, Hadestown is one of the mining towns where everything is owned by one man/company (in this case, Hades) and everyone in the town works for him, therefore all of the money comes from Hadestown. Think of it like the company in the song Sixteen Tons.

Rhyianan

I would assume that the reason it took her longer to get up from Hadestown is because HADES IS KEEPING HER not because she wants to stay. Her husband doesn't want to let her go. I haven't seen the rest of the musical, but it seems like they're leaning hard into the idea that Hades is holding her prisoner like we see in other pop interpretations (IE Percy Jackson)

Seiryunohoushi

Your excitement over Hades is wonderful to watch. I assume Casper is also excited. Thank you for this reaction.

Dorothy Rosenberg

bass always going to get you and I would be too

MJ

To be fair, while Hades is the antagonist, he isn't really a villain. Which means you can be on his side because the ideal ending is everyone's happy

Allison Watts

Fun fact about this Orpheus and Eurydice, the actors are actually dating and have been for a while! Idk if they were at the time of the recording, but Reeve Carney (Orpheus) and Eva Noblezeda (Eurydice) dated for at least 2 years of the run of this show 😊

Hello, its costuming time again. So, this animatic tried, and it is lovely, I just don't know if there's any way to get across just how COOL Hades and his actor, Patrick Page, is in this. His entrance is just so damn cool. His voice, that deep rumble, it really is just the cherry on top. In this appearance, He is fully decked out in a double-breasted pinstripe suit, with a tie and a waistcoat, plus a black trench coat, sunglasses, and, lastly, snake skin boots. The man is dapper and it really works for him. Plus Patrick Page is full silver fox in this and it looks so nice. After this, he looses the coat, the suit jacket, the sunglasses, in favor of just the waistcoat, with some sleeve garters, which I mention because I find sleeve garters really attractive. 10/10, definitely gotta be one of my favorite accessories. He also rolls up his sleeves, which sort of destroys the point of sleeve garters but whatever. I mention the sleeves not just because its hot, though it is, but because it shows off the tattoo. Not Patrick Page's. Hades'; its a part of his costume design. He has on one arm a full sleeve tattoo of bricks, representing the wall that is the River Styx in this musical. You can actually see it in the Chant animatic a few times. I'm sorry, he's just. He's so cool. Has he done some things wrong? Yes. Should he do more things wrong? Also yes. Now, to the rest of Way Down Hadestown, which I have a lot of thoughts on. First, a shout out to Amber Grey, who's choreography for this is... you know, I'm not actually sure what it is she's doing, let alone how to explain it, but--- It looks EXHAUSTING. And she doesn't even get slightly winded on the stage. Hat's off to her, she's amazing. (No but really, what is she doing there at the start?) Second, that train whistle you hear in this song, and throughout the musical? That's not the band. That's Hermes, since he's the train conductor. He has an old-fashioned metal whistle that he uses. Its a neat little touch that I love. Also, another little fun prop, Hermes spends the later part of this song carrying around a black, tasseled umbrella, its fun. Third, a really important detail that the animatic misses, is that on the stage, when Eurydice sins "Kinda makes you wonder how it feels", its not just Orpheus who stops and looks at her. It's everyone. Including, especially, Hades. He even does the whole 'pushes sunglasses down his nose to look at her over the rim' move. Lastly, Good Morning America recorded a publicity performance of this song, which is once again, an edited, shortened version that still manages to get the general vibe of the stage performance across wonderfully. It cannot, unfortunately, get across the brilliant way the stage is used in this song, but what can you do. The staging is unbelievable and its a shame most people will never get to see it. So I will simply do this once and never again: THE STAGE!! ARGG! Okay, I'm done. I'm biting my fist not to go off about it for paragraphs because I'm deeply passionate about it, but I'm trying not to take up too much time.

Alexandria Podolak

If I remember correctly the writer first thought of the hell or hadestown line before the musical was an idea. It was a bit different she was driving through Mexico and saw refugees and she thought you either get to hell or a border town ain't no difference anymore. I've always loved that lyric for the desperation it shows

marienapoleon

Your reaction to hearing our Lord and Master Patrick Page was everything I wanted tbh XD

Magnus Taliesin

Fun Fact! Since you mentioned liking Hermes' actor, Andre De Shields, who is the original actor for Hermes and who the animatic designs are based on, won FOUR awards for his role in Hadestown. In 2019, he won a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Tony Award, all for Featured Actor in a musical; plus in 2020, he additionally won a Grammy Award for his part in the album. He was also nominated for a fifth, a Drama League Award, but he didn't win it.

Alexandria Podolak

I think Hades broke him in this one🤣

Phoenix Mackenzie

The actor who plays Hades, Patrick Page, also has a role in a musical podcast I LOVE called In Strange Woods. If you enjoy podcasts (it is 5 episodes total) I would recommend it, it is such a unique storytelling formula!!

Blue Sainety

I love Patrick Page (Hades) so much! He’s also Judge Claude Frollo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame on Broadway and his voice just kills me every time

Rite

The lines was " it has not been 6 months" so my take is she left right before summer ended. (I don't know the this story to know the actual tinelime, but the few times I have watched it, it's what I've personally assumed, considering she shows up when summer begins, skipping spring (interpretation from last song), i could also be wrong with my assumption, but the tragedy does specify that for what ever reason the seasons are messed up because Persephone hasn't been staying in the overworld for the agreed upon 6m for some time now. Fun fact: the guy who plays hades will be playing Satan in Helluva Boss. His episode hasn't premiered yet though.

PhoenyxFyre

Omg, Mortius automatically simping after Hades, like, same Mortius, same🤣🫣🤭

Itzayana

So, something a lot of folk don't entirely get is that being God of the Underworld doesn't necessarily make Hades God of Death—that's the domain of Thanatos. Zeus rules the skies, Poseidon rules the Seas, and Hades... He rules everything deep below the ground. As such, he was a God of Wealth, because every precious stone and metal borne of the earth, (and returned to it,) is part of his domain. Hades is FILTHY rich.

Macabrellian

In the show Way Down Hadestown is presented as a New Orleans style funeral, where everyone celebrates and plays music and dances and stuff, which is why everyone is partying and the like. It's sort of a funeral for Persephone and summer as she returns to Hadestown

Leia Elkins

fun fact, iirc, in the stage version for Way Down, Hadestown, Orpheus and Eurydice take a moment to sit at the front of the stage holding hands to watch the others groove

Colby Zimmermann

For me Hadestown is a cool metaphor for capitalism and different class struggles. Eurydice has always struggled. Orpheus has always been looked after. His optimism is often … naive. But in a beautiful inspiring way. A celebration of why we tell stories. Why art is important even when winter is near. For me, when Eurydice says kinda makes you wonder how it feels… I imagine she’s wondering what it might feel like to be rich. Comfortable. Like imagining winning the lotto. A close your eyes what would I do if I had everything tragic fantasy. Love it so much sorry for the essay I’m just working my way through these while I draw and loving it sm. I adore this musical could write an ESSAY lol

Broody Gaming

To answer your question, the dancers in Way Down are Orpheus and Eurydice. The animatics look very much like the original cast (Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada).

Chris B.

Hades is god of the underworld AND all of the riches beneath the earth. Also Persephone lingered in the underworld because he wouldn't let her leave, not by choice.

Chris B.

The show really plays into Hades' other domain as the God of Wealth, so "Hadestown" is also a mine (see Hermes calling him "the King of the Mine,) presumably which all the riches of the mortal world come from.

HamboneKablooey

Persephone's lyric was "Winter's nigh (aka it's coming) and summer's o'er (shortened from over so it'll rhyme with "coming for") Edit: Dang it, if I'd played the video 5 more seconds XD

HamboneKablooey

Loved the harmonies in that first song...so pretty. That second song sure was interesting. Hades' voice sure is great. But honestly, I could see it being a parallel for the two couples. I definitely see some confusion still. Though possibly Persephone is lingering more in the underworld less because she wants to and more because Hades doesn't want her to leave. In this one, Persephone tells him he's early in picking her up...and she sounds angry/frustrated...and Hades' only response is that he missed her so much. Which could be sweet, but Persephone doesn't seem happy to go back into the underworld. (At least, that's what I understood by how she kept saying she needed so much just to get her through the time down there.)

Kenzie Wing

I too immediately fell in love with hades upon hearing his voice 😅

confetti dragon

Hades in this musical is very much inspired by the Roman version of him, Pluto, who was the god of wealth as well as the god of the dead. Precious metals come from underground, after all

confetti dragon

Hades is also the god of wealth so he's rich AF

Anthony

"Winter's nigh, and summer's o'er" 🤭🤭🤭 that line tripped me up first time too EDIT: oh he pulled up the lyrics 😭

SugarBrother

mfw Mortius also uses Enhancer for YouTube... *He just like me fr 😭* Edit: it was indeed not six months... She's always late and leaves early, per Living It Up 😅
