FINISHING Firebringer | Together + Chorn + Finale

In which Mortius breaks his microphone stand, rants about vocal mixing for too long, and is rendered genuinely and completely speechless at the ending

Comments

I don't have answers about Chorn, but the impression it gave me was a kind of Tree of Knowledge snub? Like in a "what's more believable?" kind of way.

Marguerite McBee

They did actually hint that Chorn was not what she seemed earlier in the show. When Zazz discovers fire she’s asked what it is and Chorn answers ‘Fire’ suggesting she already knows what it is

Dave Ballinger

For me, the whole Chorn thing at the end symbolises the Enlightenment era of the 17th and 18th century. A new age that emphasized reason, science, individualism, and skepticism of traditional authority. It laid the foundation for modern democracy, human rights, and secular thought by promoting knowledge, critical thinking, and the idea that society could progress through rational reform. That might just be my interpretation from my perspective as a scientist, but it works quite well if you consider that Chorn says there is no god, they know the earth is round, which are major changes in understanding that happened and paved the way for the enlightenment movement.

Sven Winter

Is chorn a play on the alien conspiracy theories that are about things like pyramids and other structures and the being built or having knowledge that doesn't make since for lik 5000bc or whatever? Or the atlantis conspiracy theory. Because i totally understand chorn character if its a ploy on those theories

PhoenyxFyre

I hope kaylee takes the thumbnail from the chorn reveal your face was too funny

Author Reinvented

I 100% agree, it's always a gamble on the mixing quality when watching pre-hatchetfield shows

Ratatosk Clarke

I first noticed him in Trail To Oregon, during the sleeping bag scene. I never noticed him in anything else though. I gotta go rewatch now 👀

Sterling Klein

I enjoy doing the same thing with my friends. That being said, I can also see how someone unfamiliar with Starkid would be a little put off by it.

Lizzy C-Drake

I agree that the Chorn thing kinda came out of nowhere. I think it was mentioned in a BTS or on a live stream at one point that even the live audience at the shows were confused. That being said, if this show was ever considered for OAR, I'm curious if Casper's prophetic abilities would be able to predict the Chorn reveal.

Lizzy C-Drake

Some fans when first watching Firebringer said that romantically Jemilla and Zazzalil came out of nowhere and I am so glad you noticed it earlier. I 100% think they make a lot of sense and the ending is so cute.

Ratatosk Clarke

One of my favorite of their shows

Ratatosk Clarke

Yes! Thank you, you can see him playing the keyboard in hatchetfield shows

Megan Smith

keyboard player (and sometimes music director)

Smee

Yes I love the finale and was very happy they didn’t end the show with the Chorn song (which I absolutely love it’s incredible) but the alien aspect was so out of left field I didn’t even register how amazing Jamie’s voice was the first time I watched it 😄 but I also like how she comes back to dance and sing with everyone in the finale 💚 still my favorite StarKid show 😁 and also how I discovered StarKid in the first place

Emma

Just to answer a few questions: Clark is in the band, as are all the other people that Jemilla mentions as she's saying goodbye to Clark, and is very involved with the music of their shows. A lot of the cast refer to him (and another member, AJ Holmes) as their Musical Daddies. There wasn't really a time skip, it was more all the kids in the Neanderthal tribe were being co-parented by all the adults. The Chorn stuff is definitely weird, I mostly just enjoy Jamie singing lol - I feel like a lot of this show was really experimental for them and some of it landed and some might not have. It's probably my least favourite show but I still enjoy it, especially the soundtrack.

Alexandra

The albums are a lot better on several different songs across multiple albums. Sadly the mixing isn't always very great. During the live shows

Danielle Lockwood

Now that you're done and not gonna be influenced by comments I feel comfortable saying this is my least favorite Starkid show 😅😅 The plotting in this show is very clumsy imo. I get that it's supposed to be an ancient aliens thing, but I feel like they really fumbled making that obvious lol (Just imo, I get that lots of people like it... I just do not 😅)

Lauren Groen

Fun fact, Clark is actually the drummer (correct me if I’m wrong, he’s for sure in the band tho) and you can see him in the background of some if their other musicals

Megan Smith

im just surprised its taken so long for something to happen to the poor mic/stand..... 🤷

Phoenix Mackenzie

I am so confused, I was never aware the Chorn ending was so divisive. For me it always was the best part of Firebringer and I think it is hilarious. It is the moment I wait for with baited breath whenever I introduce the musical to a friend...

Philine Trnka

‘Together’ will always make me think of the Starkid concert in London last year; when Meredith & Lauren came out to do that song they had a whole bit about how they were supposed to pick a solo each but they didn’t wanna do solos and did this instead. It was very cute :) & yeah the ending is kinda wild and I still think it’s CRAZY that Starkid thought it was too predictable lmao

fizzycolalizzie

The Chorn thing seems to be one of the most polar thoughts. People either seem to live it or hate it. The thing is, some people believe that the gift of knowledge and the ability to create came from aliens far smarter than our ancestors. When they thought humanity was able to advance safely, they gave them the tools and thoughts to do so. It explains why Chorn mostly only said Chorn, and why "it" was the one who coined fire. There are clues in the show like when Chorn is referred to as it and Emberly says Chorn is like a monster. Also, I like when Tiblyn raises her hands to the sky at the end. She was into Chorn who came from the sky. It was like she was always reaching out to Chorn and ends the show by choosing to do so again. I think it is kind of a sweet idea.

Kris Shepard

Seconded, superb show!

Morrighan

I loved Chorn in all its forms. I hope the writers feel better about it now. If they'd changed the ending, we wouldn't have heard Chorn sing as much.

Kory Misun

Since you're done with this show, I wanna suggest something starkid-adjacent. Spies are Forever is a musical done by the Tin Can Bros that's very similar to starkid tonally and has a lot of cast crossovers. I adore it and it's got very strong themes that I think you'd enjoy digging into.

Alyssa P

Your reaction to Chorn is very valid. I think everyone reacts the same and yet the writers thought it was too predictable and were worried about it! 😅

Makayla

Yeah, that ending really threw me and, personally, put me off Firebringer a bit back when I first saw it. It’s one of the few Starkid shows I hadn’t rewatched, so thank you for your reactions because I really enjoyed getting to appreciate all the earlier parts more with your analysis!

Kelsey Avril

So, the Chorn thing makes sense when you view it in light of Ancient Alien theories. In terms of the show, it's why Chorn isn't consistent about language, and Chorn is also the one that actually names 'fire' too. It's also a fakeout because Chorn is the more stereotypical 'Neanderthal' in appearance but the actual ones are all attractive and Chorn.. is an alien. If you look up the Annunaki, the ancient Sumerian gods, there's a TON of alien conspiracies about them actually all being aliens. As a historian, this pains me, but it is a popular conspiracy. Also, I listen to too many podcasts breaking down conspiracies so I know way too much about them. The idea of aliens 'seeding' life on Earth and raising humans as a slave species is ALSO a popular idea and involves several species of Aliens. It's a whoooooooole rabbit hole. Frankly, it makes the Chorn twist look positively sane.

Bethany S

Yeah, the Chorn thing was wild and came out of nowhere and could only really work in a Starkid show

Addy0302

Pls tell me it’s tea-fling

Nicholas & Heather

To be fair, Trunkell and Snarl can talk. So maybe all big animals can. I adore how Chorn sounds like every 80's and 90's pop diva combined with a pleasant twang. I'm sad that Firebringer is now done, but I definitely enjoyed the ride! You're not wrong Mortius, I'd boost the heck out of those Together harmonies. Shoutout to Grunt, a fellow Lefty who lost his poor arm (and feet) to a giant cat. Mic Stand down! This is not a drill!

Kory Misun

Friendly reminder that the Lang brothers thought this ending was TOO PREDICTABLE

Michelle Stewart

dont worry mortius this is a VERY normal reaction to chorn. this is why people were able to warn that it had "a wild ending" when you posted your first video without everyone yelling about spoilers: it is simply unguessable

Mikayla Welker

I've been waiting for this reaction since you started this show. Did not disappoint

Emily Colantonio

I honestly forget about the Chorn thing when I think about this show because it's so weird and IMO unnecessary, though the vocal performance is great. I also agree it's a travesty the way the mixing sounded on Together. The Clark thing still cracks me up and yes, super relatable Zazz reaction to him. Clark Baxtresser is the keyboard player and sometimes composer/musical director for some of the shows. When the camera went to him off-stage, he was at his keyboard in this stage's place for the band. The other names Jemilla said in that bit were also the other band members up there.

Liz Siron

Omg I’ve had that same bit of Crossroads stuck in my head since I heard it 😂 stoked to see the end of this show w ya!

Broody Gaming

I think I saw something about the ending, though I'm not entirely sure if I remember the source correctly, but I think it was supposed to be making fun of the conspiracies of aliens being behind big human accomplishments (like the pyramids and other similar theories). I can't remember if it was a fan theory or confirmed, but it's definitely still jarring upon the first watch.

Ace

The Chorn stuff is crazy and I can't blame you for being thrown by it.

Ione Warren

Yeah the mixing is much better on the cast album. You may find similar issues when you get to Black Friday in particular, although because of that they really paid attention to it for Nerdy Prudes Must Die and the audio on that show is so much better.

Smee

I feel like everyone had a similar reaction to Chorn. <3

Ratatosk Clarke

That's actually true across a few songs in the SK shows. The live performance will be good, but the cast recording will just elevate the entire thing

Critical Devil

Also, much as I love the vocal performance, I've also never quite understood the Chorn ending it just comes out of nowhere and feels so tonally different from everything else. Which is entertaining because Nick Lang (one of the writers) has said that he thought it was too obvious that Chorn was going to be an alien...

Critical Devil

In that ending moment: Jemilla sings Zazzalil's motif when she's proposing, while Zazzalil responds with Jemilla's motif when she takes over the proposal. The finale is one of my favorites from this show!

Critical Devil

(also “that’s supposed to be straight” - my parents pointing at me lol)

Mafidon

Firebringer Finale: In which Mortius’ intense feelings on moderation in political views causes him to begin physically breaking things

Mafidon

I agree the mixing on Together is like tragic.

Ratatosk Clarke

The ending is a take for sure but the songs are still bangers. Also since your starting The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals soon the subtitles are suspect at times and downright awful at others. I believe Joe Walker (Voldemort, Prince Achmed, Ducker) did all the awesome subtitles for the earlier shows but not the newer ones.

WOOO Ive been waiting for this one!!
