2025-11-18 23:44:44 +0000 UTCI’m probably in the minority when I say I actually LOVE starship’s pacing!!! I think it’s silly and fun to have all the bits and stupid unnecessary lore. I completely understand wanting to get back to the main storyline, but personally I love all the little side quests we take, like seeing Junior be an annoying teenager to his new stepmom. It feels like we’re also getting a chance to explore and goof around in the show’s universe!!

Starship has some really fun highs (especially Tootsie+Megagirl's verses of 'The way I do' and 'Kick it up a notch') but the show gets lost and drags on. If they would cut at least 30 minutes, modernize it and add a few more songs, this has the potential to be one of the sweetest musicals.

And Tootsie and Mega-Girl are one of my absolute favorite romances ever 😍 My preferred version of The Way I Do is from Starkid’s Space Tour. I love Denise, but the way Jamie Lynn Beatty sings February’s part just gives me chills every time, I highly recommend checking it out, it took the song from “Ok, that was cute” to multiple playlist status for me.

2025-11-15 09:44:24 +0000 UTCI do want to point out real quick that the Space Claw thing didn’t quite come out of nowhere, there was actually a decent amount of foreshadowing in Act 1. I’m not sure if that foreshadowing just didn’t quite do it for you (valid if that’s the case) or if a few moments might’ve slipped your mind since it’s been a minute. I’ve always thought it was set up pretty well, however I do agree that Pincer is a way more compelling villain

2025-11-15 09:19:43 +0000 UTCI adore Starship but it can be a little frustrating at times. Amazing music, fun characters, a ton of heart, and some really interesting sci-fi concepts. The pacing is all over the place though, and the jokes don’t always land. I totally get your confusion (exasperation, maybe?) at how Act 2 starts as well as that weird lull in Act 1. It’s a great show overall, but very inconsistent when you break it down. I imagine there’s a lot of pressure to laugh at every joke and let things that bother you slide, so I appreciate your honesty in these videos! That being said, I am so glad you still seem to be enjoying the show in spite of its flaws! Seems like Tootsie Noodles is really carrying the show for you which is SO real 😂 He’s just perfect.

Much more absurd than their newer stuff, but it's a lot more tame then their other old stuff. Twisted really was the turning point from pure absurdism. I will point out that the humans think he grew up in the abandoned starship fending for himself. It's from 18 years ago and Joey was only about 22 at this point. That's why no one bats an eye at him saying "my world" or "first time on a working starship with humans". They don't think he suddenly emerged from cryo sleep but that he was traveling with the rangers who crashed as a toddler. They think he's Tarzan instead pf Ariel (They are also idiots so that helps too)

Im a big fan of junior i think hes fun but i also love Up and his whole deal hes a very interesting character. The puppets are also super fun and i love them a lot, cinderellas castle is also a very fun show for puppetry from starkid

But I really like Up's character so far, I was a little worried it'd be just a gag at his expense that he's "gone soft". And obviously it is meant to be funny, but it's kind of wholesome that after an entire act of the other humans demanding that he has to be tough again, to stop being so soft, that Bug, who doesn't live in that culture, tells him that it's okay to have a big heart and to be soft, and that caring about others is what makes him strong, not the other way around. It obviously still is 2011-coded in other places that date it, but I think it's honestly a very sweet message!

You keep bringing up being confused about why no one clocks Bug not being human, and if we take away the most obvious answer (the show is silly and the writers didn't want them too), the show does actually give a watsonian explanation - at the end of act 1 when they make up a backstory for Bug, it includes him crashing as a child and growing up on Bug World alone - which would probably make someone pretty weird. Basically they kinda think he's Tarzan

Also, im pretty sure they think he grew up in on bug planet all by himself (because his human body looks pretty young) so he didnt really experienced being around humans, but he grew up around bugs and learned to love it and understand it or something. I need to refresh my memory on the backstory they gave him, but the most of the slip ups can be dismissed as not growing with humans and adopting bug planet as his home world. Also they are all kinda stupid (affectionate)
