The Amazing Digital Circus - Episode 7

Comments

Mortius out here adjusting his watch before starting the show. I see you took the advice of General John MacNamara seriously!

Shrimptown... Remember what happened to the shrimp in the start of the episode? :')

The Chinese room is a philosophical exercise about whether a system that outputs a correct response to prompts is really intelligent or not. TBSkyen did a pretty exhaustive explanation on his animation breakdown and reaction which should be available to the public in about a week iirc.

BronzeDionysus

yeah as soon as he said his name, my trust took a sharp left turn into nope-ville!

I think also this is why Kinger says "Who?" When Abel is brought up. There is no Abel at their circus, Abel was never real. That kind of thing.

This episode confirmed my own theory, which is they are digital copies and there is nothing for them to escape to

AOngslasher

So many shows I like have gotten new episodes lately ! Percy Jackson series launched, The amazing digital circus, and Sanders Sides. I just finished watching the new TADC episode so I could watch it before your reaction and I'm excited to see yours !

Even now, Jax & Caine are still two of my favorite characters. I absolutely love how complex they are and will always love them despite all of the very Not Okay things they've done. I also had a slight mental break when the NPC said his name was Abel...and at Caine tossing the gift basket...I've clearly been watching too much of Hazbin s2! 😂 I was so tense throughout this episode when it first dropped yesterday, and the abrupt ending still makes me scream. I know the wait will be worth it, but what do you MEAN we won't see the repercussions of all this for a little over three months?! 😭💔

Small thing but thank you for adding the if you're financially able to with buying merch. I don't know for others but I can feel bad, almost guilty that I can't support with money a lot of the time because even though I would love to buy literally every single piece of merch for all the indie shows I love, it's near impossible when you just have enough to make it through the month and only have a little left over for anything nice

If you are wondering about the poorly animated fish it is actually a reference for Zach Hadel who voiced the character. He is most well known now I think for the show smiling friends but the fish was a reference to an old movie called Gaither’s Pond. It’s a horribly animated piece with religious overtones featuring a talking fish much like the ones you see in this episode. (Also fun side note if you zoom in on the paper Able shows the group, it says if the players would disconnect the network only “lucid” players would wake up)

(also the weird fish are based on some bad CGI home video I think. [Something]'s Pond?

I love that Gangle isn't wearing her comedy mask at all this episode. She's even having fun and happy, just... Not wearing it. It's kind of great.

Caine's heading to the store for cigarettes and milk... just got that.

Rewatching this, I love the detail of Abel explaining that Caine will be left behind alone if they go through with the plan, Zooble basically going "Yeah, don't care, get to the plan already", and Abel noticeably being a little put out by that. Caine was trying to give them a nudge to picking the "stay" option by telling them that if they ever left, he'd still be trapped here alone, only to hear that basically no one cares... I feel so bad for him, even with all his mess-ups.

Hi awesome video

THANK YOU i have been spinning my brain trying to remember what The Chinese Room was a reference to because i knew I heard it but I couldn't remember the exact place and so I just accepted the bit as a bit and figured it'd come to me later

Lyka

The Chinese room bit is a reference to the Chinese Room Argument by John Searle. It's a metaphor for how large language model AIs work. The idea is that there is someone who only speaks English trapped in a room with a book that tells them what responses to give to any Chinese character they receive. The book does not tell them what any of the characters mean. It just guides them to send out a collection of Chinese characters in response any combination of characters that are sent into the room. A fluent Chinese speaker on the outside of the room could send in a question written in Chinese and get a coherent response without the person in the room ever knowing the meaning of what was said. The Chinese speaker could easily be convinced that the person in the room also knows Chinese, when in fact they were just following a complicated algorithm. This is used to illustrate the fact that even though LLMs can seem to understand human communication, they are actually just following an algorithm. Something like chat gpt doesn't understand the human thought process any more than the English speaker in the room understands Chinese. I find it absolutely wild that Caine chose to use this thought experiment as a bit. If you look closely at the book the NPC is holding when Jax opens the door, it's titled "The Artificial Chinese Dictionary, Computerized Edition."

According to the wiki we gonna have to wait a while I can’t find the original post but the wiki says we are gonna have to wait till March 20th of next year

ANTHONY ASHMALL

"No, I never, ever wonder why we're here. Semper Fi, bitch!" [Jax has strong Griff energy and I'm here for it]

A Last Action Hero reference is always a win.
