NERDY PRUDES MUST DIE | If I Loved You thru Ending

Comments

I actually got a patreon membership just to see your reaction to the ending early because I've been really enjoying your reactions so far, and I must say. Grace Chasity the woman you are. Gotta be one of my all-time favorite freaks. Also, fun fact! When the kickstarter for this show was going the Langs mentioned this was actually the FIRST Hatchetfield show they wrote the plot of, so it's highly likely this was never intended to be just a trilogy :) They've also said that Nightmare Time is where they put the ideas they have that would be too expensive/difficult to properly execute on a stage, which implies (at least to me) that they're working on other shows within the Hatchetfield universe!

E Greenleaf

It's in the video descriptions on YouTube; it confused me for a while, too.

Anne (Not Boleyn)

I just realized the Lords in Black say, "forever in our debt" during one of the I want to say choruses of their song. That has some interesting implications. Mortius, why didn't you think about the implications?!

Anne (Not Boleyn)

Y'all, where do I find the discord link? I've been looking for one for like a week

Hailey Germain

they're all 18 in the musical. steph didn't mean that line in a literal sense. she was basically just saying "when you grow up" like "when you start acting your age." but all of the teenagers are 18

Max

to be fair, they're all supposed to be 18 in universe i think? like, I'm not dating an 18 year old, but full adults acting as 18 year old high school students is probably less of a gray area than you were worried about. edit: I wrote this like a minute before she says "when you turn 18" oops

Helios Warden

This was incredible! I'm so glad you enjoyed this. Honestly, your review makes me realize how I, too, need to go look more into this lore by watching some of the other musicals I have not seen like nightmare time. I justed wanted to make the suggestion you watch Cinderella's Castle, by Starkid. I REALLY think you would enjoy that because Bryce absolutely slays her leading role. Also so very freaking good. I sometimes have a hard time deciding which musical I love more. Hope to see this content in the future!!!

Bianca Peterson

Wow! It surprises me to hear this was a least favorite for anyone when it came out! Most (including myself) have it ranked equal or better than TGWDLM. Can I ask what had it so low for you originally?

Jordan Leigh

Also Mortius in fairness, Pete and Ted weren't originally supposed to be both played by Joey. Pete/Hot Chocolate Boy was originally played by Robert Manion, who also played Professor Hidgens and Ethan. He was fired because it turned out he was a piece of shit (which is a damn shame because he's a really talented performer, but that doesn't overrule being a piece of shit). Funnily it was like a week before Nightmare Time 2 was recorded, so Joey ended up playing Ethan for it and Nick Lang was Pete and Hidgens. This is also why Hidgens is played by Blim in Workin Boys and Will in Guy Reprise.

Ferret

Hey Kayley. Kayley. Making Mortius end the Penultimate episode at the end of the reprise was evil.

Ferret

I don't wanna overhype the show... BUT.. based on what you like about other Starkid shows? I think you're gonna LOVE Cinderella's Castle.

Cas Howl

The total runtime of each Nightmare Time season isn't much more than a season of regular television.

Ferret

I like Starkid a lot but aint nobody got time to go back and watch all of Nightmare Time. Other thoughts. Its amazing how often people forget about evil spell books isnt it? You would think that would have been priority one to secure somewhere after Max was dealt with but because of everything they forgot that they had left it alone with Grace. Also love that you loved this one. Its really the starkid show where I felt like they finally nailed everything, and it only got better from here with Cinderellas Castle.

Murry Soothsayer

It’s also from the end of the title song in NPMD. It’s used everywhere in Hatchetfield

Aubrey W. Ferris

Is it weird that I still consider this a happy ending? We still get MCs finishing in a healthy relationship who aren’t the targets of the twist villain who I think will at least survive her if not take her down after the ending of the show. To me the ambiguity is how they win, not how the world ends.

Tamlin Day

I know others have said this but Red is moreso Max's/corruption's color rather than Nibbly's (the pink Lord in black) so TECHNICALLY!! You still have a chance if they decide to stage a show connected to Nibbly that's not Honey Queen :)

Chris

Whether or not you react to nightmare time, you should definitely watch Workin Boys. It’s so much fun

Phoebe D

Rewatching this show through reactions, especially yours, makes me appreciate the show so much more. It was my least favorite of the trilogy when it came out, now it is my favorite. Seeing it from a different perspective really changes things.

intrepiddragons

There are certain nightmare times episodes that cover each lord in black. One even goes into Webbie’s connection with them

Mackenzie Bourdage

18:23 Mortius's favorite starkid song not featuring Dylan Saunders

ResTheMess

I CANT BELIEVE I MISSED THIS WHEN IT DROPPED, WATCHING IT RN. I'VE BEEN SO EXCITED!!!

Max

The emotional whiplash this show gives me is unmatched by anything else

Caryn Smith

The stinger when they uncover the book is used at the end of "Nerdy Prudes Must Die" (the song). Also, yes, Pokotho/"Pokey" is the power behind the events of TGWDLM. You can tell he resonates with our concept of musical theater, taking the human form of an artsy theater kid. The other Lords In Black's forms also play a bit into their (supposed) personalities, such as Wiggog Y'rath/Wiggly (the leader) being a homecoming king. Listening to "The Summoning" was, I think, my first proper exposure to the Hatchetfield canon, so I came into the lore super backwards, but at least I knew it had some nifty cosmic monster junk in it! XD

Artist Deco

I'm so glad you enjoyed this show so much! It's my personal favorite Starkid show, and I especially loved your reactions to Cool As I Think I Am and If I Loved You, as well as the reprise of these songs bc they're my favorite songs 🤭! Also, the almost-death scene of Pete was the first time I cried bc of a live show. Peter is my favorite character in all of Starkid's universes and my heart about stopped. Glad to see I'm not alone in how emotional it made me!

Lunabug2004

The funniest part of BOTH Grace "twists" in this ep is that as shocking as they may seem to react to, both of them have been expertly foreshadowed via scene or song. (Literal Monster Reprise, Dirty Girl) Both characters are eachothers weakness. And Grace be crazy!

Austin Civatte

this is THE comment bahaha

Austin Civatte

“There has to be another show in the Hatchetfield universe right” Yes there is. “We gotta cover those other lords” They were covered Nightmare time dude!

JCBee

This is so late in the musical to be noticing the nightmare time motif from not your seed but I'm just glad it happened

D. Sparrow

Funnily enough, Maria wasn’t in Black Friday because she was playing Regina George in the Mean girls tour

Mackenzie Bourdage

The shows for the other Lords in Black are Nightmare Time episodes. I went in fully blind the first time I watched NPMD, I hadn't seen any of the Hatchetfield trilogy, and while I still enjoyed it a lot watching it again after seeing the rest and having context made it way better

Cambria

When this first started, I said skipping Nightmare Time is a good move for content creators because of their reactions and how much hype it builds up for Nightmare Time. I still stand by it.

Sunayama

Watching you freak out over if I loved you and connecting the dots already for cool as I think I am reprise is wild to me. I never clock these things and only realize them in hindsight it's so cool to see someone catch it

D. Sparrow

yeah! and the motif is even incomplete in this song, it's cut off by if I love you. probably a sign pete wasn't going to die

Lydia

this is the greatest reaction I've ever watched. this is what i'm here for. also i love this fanart and need to gush about it https://64.media.tumblr.com/e91bcd9da67fd3525e544c6a25ba13c4/689b5aa7fa80ae51-ba/s1280x1920/242fa01d675dbb8de5c7cdc5deffc80b7c8b85bb.jpg see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fallen_Angel_(painting)

Cassie

It's also why Grace was the exception. He pursues everyone EXCEPT Grace despite her being the nerdiest prude of the group, but he doesn't proclaim her to be. In fact, he assaulted one of his friends for the suggestion.

Sunayama

If it helps with the awkwardness of high schoolers played by adults being attractive, they established early on that all the main characters are 18, which doesn't completely solve the problem because they are still in High School, but they are not, technically, underage. I'm pretty sure Grace's multiple "We're only 18" lines exist as a funny way to establish they are not minors.

Mike K

"If he's killing nerds, then theoretically, would he not kill Steph?" Well here's the thing, earlier, Max told Pete: 'You're not a nerd because of your glasses, your hobbies or anything like that. You're a nerd because I said so. I willed it into existence.' So because of his god complex, if Max simply proclaims you as a nerdy prude, then you are one.

Bub

So many people in the comments are talking about the Lords in Black being significant in Nightmare Time, but so few even mention the Queen in White, a character who is just as important to the lore. She was already introduced to us in the musicals under a different name...

Sunayama

if you dont watch nightmare time PLEASE at least react to workin boys or cinderella's castle, the land cc takes place in is gonna be a series like the hatchetfield trilogy so might as well consume all the lore quickly

fruit

Ok so I really don't think you can just watch clips of Nightmare Time to get the necessary bits but maybe someone else can figure and cut that out better than I could! But here's a brief overview (imo) of episodes that would probably give you what you're looking for. LORDS IN BLACK Tinky (yellow): Time Bastard* Nibbly (pink): Honey Queen Blinky (purple): Watcher World Pokey (blue): TGWDLM** Wiggly (green): BF *Time Bastard is more impactful when you pair it with Forever and Always, but if you have to pick one, Time Bastard has the meat relevant to Tinky and his comment about having Spankoffskis in his toy box **Pokey also plays a role in Yellow Jacket, which also introduces Charles, who you see in Hatchet Town. LORE The Witch in the Web: A LOT of lore here regarding the Foster family (Hannah and Lex) and the Black and White. Killer Track: introduces the Black Book and Miss Holloway, one of my fav characters. There's a bit of Tinky at play here in that we mess with time a bit (his domain). Abstinence Camp is worth checking out for more Pete and Steph and another look at Grace, but I don't think has a ton of lore. This is just a recommendation of one of my fav stories! A good rule of thumb is if it has the Foster sisters in it, it's got relevant lore. I saw someone else in the comments describe Nightmare Time as a radio play, and I think that's accurate. They're essentially script readings (mostly s1), but as you get further in, more set dressing pops up as they played with the different format. Nightmare Time is a huge commitment, so I understand being overwhelmed, but each video (for the most part) is 2 episodes together, so each story is about an hour max. There are some exceptions where the whole episode is one story; those are lore heavy ones. If you check it out, don't feel pressured to do them all at once! I also saw NPMD before watching Nightmare Time. I caught some of Watcher World when the first episode was streamed, but the format was jarring to me and there was a lag with the stream that made me not stick it through. But after going back, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Nightmare Time for anyone who wants more Hatchefield lore. It's not necessary when watching the musicals, but it addresses SO MANY questions that you had during your reaction. NPMD is in my top 3 with Twisted and Cinderella's Castle, so I loved seeing you experience this show for the first time!

Erikka Lynn

Tbh, if nightmare time is hard to pull of logistically just watch it in your own time and if you have any thoughts you want to share, do a review video of it maybe rather than a reaction! I'm just excited to see you get to Cinderella's Castle if you still plan on that one, it's got some of my very favorite music from Starkid in it. If not though, whatever is next I'll be tuning in for 😊

Blue Sainety

Would you say that Witch in The web is also a Lords In Black one because of how it introduces each of them formally, and its inclusion of webby and the Black book

Matt Mayhem

It’s important to remember that witch in the web is also a big LIB one with Webby and it is our formal introduction to each of the Lords

Matt Mayhem

Loved your reaction. I pretty much cackled because of some of your reaction and what I knew would happen next. :D I still would love for you to do Cinderella's Castle next. I just love that show so much.

Annabelle

oh!!!! one extra thing because I must always comment on the "cool as I think i am" motif, in this song THE MOTIF IS INCOMPLETEEEE. Every other time when a nerd dies the whole thing plays, THIS ONE IS INCOMPLETEEEEEE AHHHHHH

Lydia

I think the one nightmare time that you HAVE to watch if you do watch nightmare time is time bastard.

Lydia

Even though it's an open ending, I think it's satisfying. Also can we appreciate Joey's growth? It's great that you did starship tight before this cause it really shows how strong his voice has gotten. I hope you do Cinderellas castle next!

Masochismet

I’ve been saying that too, even down to the way Nick Lang narrates exudes that old fashioned radio show energy

Sarah Rodrigues

Definitely with what seems to be the consensus as far as what NT eps you should check out (I went back in the comments for this, it does seem to be Forever and Always/Time Bastard as a set, The Witch in the Web, and Yellow Jacket are the main. Do still recc Honey Queen for the lord in black intro, but it's the most skippable in terms of necessity. The problem is so many could be construed as necessity, so take it with a grain of salt lol). As far as the lighting goes you were so close to being spot on! There wasn’t a red for the lords, but the red can be interpreted as the Church of the starry Children/Waylon’s, which are their own entity in a way. So you were initially right on the pink and purple as well for those two lords in black. Such a good place to leave the series in, with the potential for more, but also tied up enough that they could take a break for their other projects. So happy you enjoyed it!!

Ashley D

I know a lot of people have mentioned that NMT can be listened to like a podcast or audio book and I agree, but there's another analogy I usually make. I feel like they're similar to a radio show. I always used to wonder how radio shows could convey an acted, fleshed out story without visuals, and NMT is the closest equivalent experience I think you can get in the modern ea. I've turned on NMT while cleaning my house and still get an amazing experience just listening and imagining I'm listening to an old school radio program. I mean podcasts and audio books are (in my opinion) meant to be experienced as true narrative story telling. But radio shows are meant to be what NMT also strives for, a theatre experience without a stage. Also going to add, Perky's buds is (as others said) kinda skippable just for lack of real lore drops compared to the others, but it is also acutely terrifying. Very few NMT stories portray true terror and horror like it does. Well constructed. Also Joey and that damn prop are... yeah. I put tape over him during the talk back because it was freaking me out.

Annadownya

I love TTO so much. I am an absolute Blim fangirl and that musical just os fantastic. Can't recommend enough.

Annadownya

I've also seen someone suggest an interpretation that even though Grace thought her chastity was what she cherished most, what she REALLY was trading away was her faith, which I think is another cool angle to look at it from

XanEcho

NOW YOU NEED TO WATCH NIGHTMARE TIME, season 1 and 2! YOU WILL LOVE THIS. They all tell some lore. Some of them i like better than others, but all of them are cool. And all the actors are gorgeous in it. Please, watch it. <3 AND! Every piece of NT on YT has something like 2 hours, yes, but they are 2 episodes in 1 video. So 1 story is 60 minutes. Aha! And noo, you can't watch just clips of it, because it is without context... I recomend to watch only some of the stories, but you should watch full lenght (approx. 60 min) of picked stories. So many charaters you already know are in it and you will love this. Even Dylan is in it! Personaly, from NT 1 I recomend: Nightmare Time 1: Episode 2: 2.1 Forever and Always (49 minutes) 2.2 Time Bastard (60 minutes) - Lord in Black speach "Spankoffski, whole set in my toy box" explanation! Episode 3 3.1. Jane's A Car (52 minutes) 3. 2. The Witch in the Web (56 minutes) PS: I just end second half of your reaction. Oh man, you make me emotional again in song "If I replise" with Stephanie and Peter, it was so sad and completely bring me back to my reactions. I love their performances so much. And writing. What a show. Thank you so much for your reaction. I enjoyed epicly. PS 2: Next Lords in Black are in some stories at NT1 and NT2! :D :D You have to watch it all someday...

Veronika Pacasová

Seconding this!!

Paradoxgavel

I didn't think Pete was? Given the "wake me up when you turn 18" line

Echuinith

Yes! Alllll the way back in tgwdlm, the hot chocolate kid was Pete. They even have the same outfit as his opening number. That’s why a lot of people see’s Ted outburst as him thinking about Charlotte, AND his brother Pete

Lydia

Wow!

Kory Misun

To me the ending was determined by the line "forever in our debt". Grace was the one to ultimately take the deal, she's now permanently their puppet. It manifests the way it does because of who Grace was as a person, but it would have been vastly different if Steph had been the one to seal the deal.

tkay-0

I'm gonna keep chiming in about NMT 🤣 Cause yes, each episode is 2 hours, but there are only 3 episodes in the first season and 4 in the second. And I'd say that if you could get a decent intro to all of the Lords by watching less than half of them. That being said, if he watched just Season 1 episode 2, and the second half of episode 3, I'd be happy 🤣

Ashley Evers

Mortius - "I really hope the second to last episode of this show isn't kind meh" *proceeds to be the most banger episode of all of starkid*

Ashley Evers

Alright, so if you were to break down Nightmare Time into streaming content and "watch on your own time" stuff, this is my opinion: You can wholesale skip The Ape Man, from Episode 1, but Watcher World needs to be watched in full as it introduces one of the Lords in Black. You'll want to anyways since its about Bill and Alice from TGWDLM. Forever & Always + Time Bastard need to be watched in full because plot threads continue between the two. Additionally another Lord in Black is introduced. Paul & Emma are the central focus of Forever & Always, if that helps. Jane's a Car is a wild ride but can be skipped other than a small clip 7:00-8:07, I think, but Witch in the Web is important for Hatchetfield Lore. The Honey Queen should be watched in full as it introduces another Lord in Black. You can skip Perky Buds (except for 13:30-14:20, 19:05-19:30, 21:07-22:05) and only watch Abstinence Camp, as they both cover the same basic idea in vastly different ways, but I think you'd like to have more Steph and Pete. In the same vein, you can skip Daddy. It's a blast, but it doesn't tell you anything you don't already know about the Black Book or the Lords in Black. But, Killer Track is a must watch. Yellow Jacket must be watched for more Lord in Black content and Lore.

tkay-0

Man I love the Hatchetfield lore.

Philipp Schäfer

As much as I would love to watch Mortius react to Nightmare Time, I would be happy knowing he just saw all of it more than anything else. If he popped up one day and said, "I've watched all of Nightmare Time on my own so now I get all the lore." I would be satisfied. Maybe he could make a video ranking the episodes or songs just so we could get his thoughts.

Alaina Lomasney

pete and steph realy remind me of the song: yourstupid face

Lumy

I don't have any time stamps, but for the people wo will provide some: please please make him watch the majority of time bastard! It's absolutely the best one

Havanna J

Plus Max is introduced to us singing "I'm a literal monster" and "I *will not rest* until I taste Grace Chastity's little peach"

Smee

Case in point: The only actual "nerdy prude" in the cast is Grace, and he never ONCE tries to actively kill her

Myeh

I was waiting for the "What are we watching?" From Steph after Mortius said it so many times in the previous episodes lol

Etsie_99

YES! Especialy because he already commented on how much he LOVED Bryce's voice during the song Hatched Town

Skye Alexander

I think the foreshadowing in this show for where Grace and Max both end up is absolutely incredible. They're more similar than it may seem at first. They both have an obsessive need to keep things under their control and both are power hungry. Both behave in extreme ways due to how they were raised (it's more obvious in case of Max who's clearly scared of his father, but I do think Grace sounded genuinely afraid of being caught breaking her parents' rules and it definitely seems to me that there's more behind her being a religious fanatic than just the faith aspect). And of course they're connected by their desire for each other, but in opposite ways. For Max, it's a weakness. He acts softer around her. It's the only time we see him smiling. When he gets what he wanted, he's kicking his feet in the air and thinking about cuddling. He loses because he lets his guard down around her. As for Grace, her desire for Max is something that let her win and that also brought out the worst in her. She can't accept those feelings as something that comes from her, so Max has to go. He must be punished, she plots revenge. She's relieved and happy when he dies. Grace, when she starts out, is also a devout servant of God, while Max sees himself as a god. At the end, Grace wields godlike power because of the Lords in Black, while Max ends up as a plaything for them and they take his soul. There's also a lot of really good details like what you pointed out with Max repeating Grace's dance moves during Nerdy Prudes Must Die, or Max consistently using biblical/religious phrases throughout the show ("forbidden fruit", all the God analogies, "break bread", "I'm on a new crusade", etc.). Even in Dirty Girl, there's blatant foreshadowing to Max's second death scene in the lyrics and Grace's rise in power.

fea in space

I think that the poll of which episode you should watch might be the wrong premise as the series are more of an anthology of short stories. So the poll should probably ask for what stories you should watch rather than which episode.

jackie jasmine

Looks like Mortius has played a lot of Bad Piggies lately.

KriszGamer00

Mortius: Who needs to watch Nightmare Time??? Everyone else: YOU DO XD

Mica Anne

Also, I don't think anyone is asking for Nightmare Time reactions to all come out, like, next month or something. You could do one per month or something like that and I'm pretty sure we'd all be satisfied knowing you'll get to them all eventually. I might be an outlier here, but I'd prefer you either react to entire episodes or do nothing at all with it. Don't try to cheapen the experience. If you want the lore....go watch the lore.

erin quilmer

This is definitely a watch on your own time thing but after finishing this I think you’d really appreciate fencecollapsed’s analysis in their video essay “Grace Chasity and the Horrors of Purity” if I ever play Grace (bc ALSO STARKID JUST RELEASED THE RIGHTS TO THIS SHOW APPARENTLY) that video is foundational to how I’d approach her

Sarah Rodrigues

Love a good visceral Mortius reaction it makes me so happy, truly great

sunlit commodity

Oh I almost forgot my favorite detail is that when Wiggly says “What’s in your pocket Steph-a-NIE?” that pronunciation of her name is the same way Richie says it in Act 1: “And what, prey tell, might that be, Steph-a-NIE?” (Jon I’m gonna hunt you down)

Sarah Rodrigues

I think it's way weirder to get hung up on your feelings towards grown adults than it is to feel weird about the fact that the characters are in high school. They're all 18, btw

erin quilmer

• • • • • • Bliklotep/Blinky, “The Watcher with a Thousand Eyes” “This is Watcher World, Bill! Everything that happens here is for his amusement! And Blinky can’t stand this contrived, sappy-dappy bullshit!” Blinky is a simple being with the simple wish to witness as much turmoil as possible, from drama and conflict to blood and guts, Blinky wants to see it all! Appears in: Nightmare Time S1E1 part 2, “Watcher World”

Sarah Rodrigues

Also also if you absolutely cannot do NMT then read the thread I’m about to write if you want to know a bit more about each of the Lords in Black. If you plan to here or on your own time however I would stop now to avoid any moderate to major spoilers Pokotho/Pokey, “The Singular Voice” “He might not be the hungriest, or the cleverest, the trickiest, or the most sadistic, but of all my brothers, Pokey is the most…uncompromising.” This god despises all voices that are not his own, desires the death of all that is not him, to smother and subjugate worlds into his singular consciousness. Appears in: The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals (not seen, but the events of the show are the result of his power), Nightmare Time S2E4 “Yellow Jacket”

Sarah Rodrigues

fun bit of triva for you! the "i'm not a loser" motif that pete introduces in 'cool as i think i am', and is repeated by richie in 'NPMD' (the song) and is in the instrumental of 'just for once', and by the chorus in 'dirty dudes must die', is a dies irae! pete's literally had death flags since the beginning, and the only thing that saved him was max's intervention!

bigbraveboop

Please please please react to Cinderella’s Castle as your next show 🙏

Dave Ballinger

Steph says “wake me up when you turn 18” to Pete which makes him 17

Phoebe D

Almost all of them. Honey Queen and Yellow Jacket are entire episodes.

Sarah Rodrigues

You may wanna edit this comment because one of the things you mentioned is a total surprise at the end.

TiaMattia2

Also each Nightmare Time episode is split into two stories that are an hour each. This may be a little easier to get through for you if you split each episode in 2

Dave Ballinger

And again, if it’s too much to do for a full reaction series, I would recommend treating it to some extent like a radio program or podcast and play it on your own time while you’re doing other things (but tbh I really wanna see your reaction to F&A and Time Bastard, but I can’t pick singular clips because the plot flows in a way where clips out of context might be more confusing than you want them to be)

Sarah Rodrigues

One thing I will say about NMT is that even though they’re all about 2 hours a piece, most of them are two episodes in one video, and the only ones that you would maybe need to watch in one sitting are “Forever and Always” and “Time Bastard” but I feel like if you did separate sessions for them in very short succession you would remember enough to make most if not all of the connections between the two The only ones that are purely 2 hour long singular episodes are “Honey Queen” and “Yellow Jacket”

Sarah Rodrigues

You keep talking about there having to be more to this universe, and I know you say you don't have time for it but sorry to say I think Nightmare Time is the expansion to the universe you're looking for. Maybe you can watch it in smaller segments? Though I'm sure that's occurred to you and you still say you don't have time for it. To be fair I haven't watched all of it yet either. Hopefully the snippits that are recommended to you are enough to fill you in. Give you the puzzle pieces you so desire. Glad you're loving Starkid's musicals though! You ask what you're going to fill this timeslot with, there ARE many more Starkid musicals. Their older stuff. If you wanted? Course, it's your channel. You stream what you like. Just sayin. :)

White Tiger

Ok as others have said, don’t feel you need to actively watch Nightmare Time when you have it on. For the first season you can listen to it while you’re doing other things like an Audiobook

Dave Ballinger

Yeah, Starkid knows how to pull at the heartstrings. This one's VERY emotional towards the end, then like you said you get your happy ending......... kind of?! The final ending with Grace using the tome and absorbing souls feels very evil dead style. Like Annie Knowby using the Necronomicon. Plus I think the evil dead series also threw twists at you as well.

White Tiger

“Theoretically he wouldn’t go for Steph, right?” Except you’re forgetting one very prominent thing Max said in Act 1: “You’re not a nerd because of your glasses or your pimple dick. You’re a nerd cause I said so. I willed it into existence.” Max makes the rules, Max decides who is and isn’t a nerd, and he can and will bend those rules to suit his needs.

Sarah Rodrigues

It works really well as an audiobook if you enjoy those or podcasts. And the second series is not zoom screens, it has full blown music videos with great shots and much better flow.

Dave Ballinger

“Only favorite song that’s not a love song” actually based on the others it’s apparently your only favorite song that’s not half by Dylan Saunders

Sarah Rodrigues

Reminder that all the characters are 18 haha

Dave Ballinger

Also it’s not explicitly mentioned for most characters but considering they’re classmates and therefore about the same age, it can be inferred that they’re 18 like Grace and Max are confirmed to be (“Carry my books? I don’t think either of us are ready for that. I mean, we’re only eighteen!” “You’re eighteen Grace, and we can try you as an adult, and I will personally make sure they throw the fucking book at you if you don’t start playing ball.”)

Sarah Rodrigues

Also re: Hot Coco Boy. YES, that character has always been Peter Spankoffski, but NO, Joey did not play him from the start. In TGWDLM he was played by Robert Manion (who is no longer affiliated with Starkid for 😬 reasons) and the role was briefly filled by Nick Lang in Nightmare Time before Joey took on the role here

Sarah Rodrigues

The proshot is so beautiful, but I bought the digital ticket right when the show came out and it had two things that elevated it for me. 1) In the coffee shop, after Grace comes in with the gun and they all go to sit and chat with cool beans, Angela misses the chair and falls on the ground. A solid 30 seconds of everyone trying not to laugh. And 2) the Lords In Black song dance is a lot easier to see. They all keep swapping the same dance moves in a pentagram. It was very cool. I get you with Nightmare Time. I think if it was on stage or animatics, I would be able to spend more time on it, but as it is Zoom screens make me space out. There are some good summary/analysis videos of the series on Youtube if you want an overall summary.

Josie Smith

And so, the time where I couldn't wait for a new Starkid reaction comes to an end. My financial situation has changed since I started subscribing here, but I wanted to continue seeing everything you had to say about he best damn trilogy that ever was, and I'm so glad I did! What a finale! I love that you loved it as much as I did. Though TGWDLM is still my favourite, NPMD is just the pinnacle of Starkid writing, every character is incredible, every song a banger and as someone who hasen't watched Nightmare Time like you I'm really looking forward to your reactions to the Best Ofs on YT in a few weeks. Thanks for all the amazing entertainment you let me relive and put your own spin on. <3

Paula Höll

Yay I’m so glad you got through this NPMD is one of my faves! NOW onto nightmare time watch recs: I think if nothing else episode 3 witch in the web is the most essential lord in blacks and timelines lore wise. If you miss Steph and Pete I recommend Abstinence camp from season 2. Season 1’s time bastard is also a pretty lore heavy one. Final full story I recommend is the season 2 finale: yellow jacket. Individual songs that I think either have lore or you’d just vibe with: The Blinky song , Jane’s a car (Dylan Saunders 👀),nibbly ditty, and run away with me. Also as a bonus there’s like 5 variations of the title theme that are fun to listen through to pick up the differences

Emily

If I had any editing/video making skills I would make a 30-45 minute video that's just a brief summary of all the Nightmare Time stories.

Abby

On my first watch of this, I had no idea why everyone started screaming when Paul and Emma appeared because I hadn't seen The Guy yet. I thought they were cheering because Jon and Lauren had more roles to play, which is fair, we can never have enough of them. Pete's outburst made even less sense to me, but now I find it extremely funny and a great connection. Hot Chocolate Guy is in Black Friday too, but you gotta really lock in to find him. The next great Mortius Moment/Meme: CHOKE. Stephanie has initiated pretty much every interaction that would have brought her and Pete closer together. The Test, the Study Date, the Big Game, and she gives Pete the best tip she can on how they can become closer, for free. She's projecting hard because she very clearly likes Peter, and it's true, he likes her right back. I just wish it hadn't been used as fuel for an argument. Hug it out. She even tells him to his face that he is her type! Aaaa, this Break Up Song is a Confession Song! The bridge is the most Grasping at Straws to keep the fight going that I've ever heard though. It's not helping, or true, it's just spite for spite's sake. Then Steph points a Finger Gun at him, which I've never noticed before. If that's written in, it's brilliant foreshadowing. 'Who's the victim when you shoot me looks?' is one of my absolute favorite lines in Nerdy Prudes. It's rather fitting, considering the situation our main characters are in, and it means Steph's been opening herself up, wanting more with Pete but it keeps getting interrupted by Hatchetfield stuff. When Paul steps up to talk to Bailey, the tune that played in the background felt like ice water down my back. I'm surprised that Emma's scream didn't knock Bailey out cold with its intensity. It's absolutely kooky that Max was right about Grace. She repressed so much and straight up snapped. I love that the Lauter family members we meet both have first names that start with S. Hrrmm. I love even more the connection between Starkid and the Starry Children Cult. Then when Solomon says 'literal monster,' despite not knowing Max's introductory song. Genius line. Thankfully the Professor's mansion was not the site of a black altar. But there is one more place that is that's not mentioned in this show! Thank Gourd you've decided to check out Nightmare Time. Any episode you have to watch with regards to the last black altar, it's Time Bastard. What's mind-blowing is that neither Steph nor Peter /see/ Max after his death until he's standing in the road. I'd be absolutely bricking it. Grace had a hint perhaps, since she dreamt about him, woke up and screamed. I wonder if Shapiro being put through the windshield by a supernatural-type being is a reference to Carrie, that'd be sick. And Max's repeated use of the b word might be a reference to Freddy Krueger. Hatchetfield loves its classic horror franchises. When Wiggly's talking to Steph, I think that he keeps Peter and Grace from understanding or listening in, but I can't be sure. Maybe he only heard when they were all singing as a group. Lauren's Lord in Black is meant to be a big ole eyeball, which is why she does this at 55:43. Tom and Becky went to prom together, but I'm counting it. VHS Christmas Carol will be my favorite Starkid show till the end of time because I straight up couldn't find anything to love about the holidays anymore. That show saved how I feel about Christmas and reworked it for the better. My second favorite is Nerdy Prudes. <3 It's kind of regrettable that Max couldn't be redeemed, ever, because he shows flashes of what might make a pleasant boyfriend. He doesn't just want a one night stand with Grace, a hit it and quit it. He wanted a cuddle. What horrifies me is that the Lords in Black have him as just another weapon in their arsenal of freaky sh!t now. What I absolutely love is that Will Branner was able to get all his makeup off and into an outfit for the homecoming number. Lauren is stunning in her glittery silver number and blonde curls. Grace references 'all the guys' that came before Jason. Just how many are we talking, Grace? Are they all dead and in the Black and White? What the fudge?

Kory Misun

Hey Mortius! Most of Nightmare Time can be listened to as a podcast or even like an audiobook. So, although you might not get the amazing facial acting and props, listening to some episodes of Nightmare Time is a perfectly valid way to enjoy them when you aren't recording. If you pick a couple episodes to fully react to for the channel, I recommend Forever and Always + Time Bastard for Paul/Emma (and an answer to one of the questions you posed during the Lords in Black sequence), The Witch in The Web for Lords in Black Lore, and Abstinence Camp if you want some more Grace and Steph/Peter! But even if you don't want to watch them for the channel, please consider listening/watching in your own time! All of them are definitely worth it.

LilLadbug

“LEAVE ROOM FOR JESUS” sends me 😂 because Pete and Steph are being so obvious it makes Grace (who has a lot on her mind at the moment) notice and call them out on it

Erica

In my opinion, The Witch in The Web is the most useful nightmare time for understanding the Lords In Black, but I think Watcher World and honey queen are brilliant episodes about Blinky (purple) and Nibbly (pink). If you can't watch all of them but still want the lore that each episode provides, I would recommend going on the Hatchetfield Wiki and reading the synopsis of the eps you didn't watch, as they are done in nice detail, or read some specific pages like The Lords In Black, Webby, The Black Book, and The Waylon Place.

Matt Mayhem

Also Workin’ Boys exists and could be a fun way to cap the Hatchetfield saga

Jordan Leigh

“There has to be another show in the hatchetfield universe” … if only we knew of another show…

Russell

Angela gets an appropriate amount of praise for her comedic acting but I definitely think she’s overlooked when it comes to her “serious” acting. She is TERRIFYING in the finale. Her delivery of “RUN YOU LITTLE BITCH” is especially chilling- she’s just so damn good!! The ending is a twist but you caught it early on!! You noticed the parallels between Grace and Max, you kept commenting on Grace’s villain arc- it was all there :)

Lindsey

Loved your reaction to the Hatchetfield series! I'm hoping you react to Falsettos sometime! it's my absolute favorite musical and I know you would love it

Nick Young

If I had to pick one NMT episode that best encapsulates the lord in black lore, I'd pick Witch in the Web. That said, it'd be a shame to watch any NMT and not see Time Bastard or Yellow Jacket. But especially for a clip compilation, Witch in the Web would be my recommendation.

Camronda

I always interpreted the red to better represent Max, more than anything. Every antagonist in the trilogy has a main color, and every Lord in Black has a main color, however that doesn’t necessarily mean every antagonist is a lord in black/every color shown heavily is indicative of a Lord. Just a primary antagonist. That’s how I see it, at least

Jordan Leigh

Mostly echoing what others have said, but if you want just the episodes of NMT that cover the other lords in black (since that’s what you seem most interested in): Watcher World Time Bastard Honey Queen Yellow Jacket Some could argue that Forever and Always is necessary as it is the Part 1 to Time Bastard’s Part 2, and I was literally typing out that Time Bastard COULD stand on its own just now, but then I remembered how confusing the ending would be without seeing Forever and Always first. So yeah I’m gonna suggest Forever and Always before Time Bastard 😅

Erica

Something I love about the soundtrack album is the absolute emotional whiplash you get when the Cool As I Think I Am reprise is immediately followed by The Best Of You.

squirrel apocalypse

There is no red Lord In Black. I’m sorry. I don’t think any one Lord in Black was responsible for the events of this show. I think the red was more to represent blood, rage, or more generally the spell that the Waylons cast in their home. You were still on point with the color theory though!!

Lindsey

“The Pink Show” is Honey Queen! There is a 4th Hatchetfield Musical planned, we don’t know when but we know it’s a possibility. It will be centered around a character exclusive to Nightmare Time, wink wink Witch in the Web wink wink Killer Track.

Lindsey

Also, nightmare time episodes are a bunch of short stories so the two hours you’re seeing could be misleading. You could probably skip some of the short stories if you just want lore heavy ones

Russell

Maybe you could post a poll on Patreon with all of the episodes and we can vote for which ones you should watch?

Lindsey

I think every episode of Nightmare Time is worth watching, however some contain more lore than others. I think that if you only watch a few, it should be Forever and Always / Time Bastard (these two must be watched together), The Witch and The Web, Honey Queen, Abstinence Camp, Killer Track, and Yellow Jacket. Most Nightmare Time episodes are two parts that can be watched independently, so most episodes are actually closer to one hour than two (Honey Queen and Yellow Jacket are their big two hour long episodes, so those ones would be the biggest time investments). I wouldn’t recommend listening to the songs without the episodes. Nightmare Time isn’t musical in the same way as the Hatchetfield Trilogy, the songs are mostly non diagetic and placed at the beginning and ending of the episodes, so you don’t get too much out of listening to them besides a good song.

Lindsey

I’m sorry for leaving so many comments also but the Lords in Black all use he/him pronouns, even the pink and purple ones. Which you may find very cool.

Ink Inc

Pete and Ted weren’t the same actors in tgwdlm

Russell

Yeah, we all feel sorry, for all the Americans that actually have brains, such as yourself. Love from 🇨🇦

Bretton B

Oh yes, Ted may be a douchbag, but his story is too good to not feel at least a bit of compassion

Lex Villagrán

Watcher World is the best Nightmare Time episode. If you watch a single episode of Nightmare Time, please let it be Watcher World.

Ink Inc

You should watch the whole Nightmare Time, but special attention to these to know the Lords in Black: Tinky: Time Bastard (probably my favorite nightmare time) Nibbly: Honey Queen Blinky: Watcher World Pokey: well... tgwdlm, but also Yellow Jacket The other episodes give an insane amount of lore, and I recommend you to go back to Hatchet Town (the song) to recognize every character mentioned. Also, the studio version has different names in it!

Lex Villagrán

Yeah, idk why he thought Joey did the role originally. In that timeline though, he doesn't talk to Steph since he still has the bow tie and no sweater to protect the suspenders

Allison Watts

If you want Nightmare Time episodes specifically covering the Lords in Black not featured in the musicals, you should watch Watcher World, Time Bastard (which is in the same timeline as Forever and Always but not in the timeline of any of the musicals), and Honey Queen. Witch in the Web, Daddy, Killer Track, and Yellow Jacket have plenty of lore as well, especially if you're interested in Lex/Hannah/Webby. If you want to see more Steph, Pete, and Grace, Abstinence Camp is a must. Honestly, if you want to watch on your free time and maybe give thoughts in a video, I wouldn't mind!

Sarah Boerschig

I’m actually so glad you didn’t watch Nightmare Time first. I’m so excited to see how you react to it having seen NPMD first. It’s like Star Wars, where they’re all contained stories (each musical is it’s own, and each episode can be watched on it’s own) BUT the order the whole picture comes together in can shape it. Even though it’s the same information!

Ink Inc

And, in this instance, I believe all the characters are also canonically 18. Not to say I don't still see actual 18 year olds as babies, but when the actors are all in their mid 20s to 30s, I think finding them attractive while playing 18 year old characters shouldn't be controversial However, I also think people should be able to find the My Hero Academia characters attractive without shame as well since most of them are drawn with the builds of 25 year olds even if they're supposed to be 15, so I'm not in line with most people who would typically care. As far as I'm concerned, high schoolers in media tend to look nothing like actual teenagers, so the typical rules don't apply

Allison Watts

"Starkid why?" because these are horror shows, and horror needs to go back to it's root: no happy endings 🔥 hahaha as a horror nerd I just love this universe exactly for that, the horror persist, the Lords on Black keep winning

Lex Villagrán

Pete in this show and your chocolate guy in TGWDLM did in fact, not share the same actor.... It was suppose to be, but I'm not knowledgeable enough on the specific reason why it's not, to speak about it, but you may already know.

Bretton B

😼

Lindsey

Ignore all other comments and recommendations, the Nightmare Time episode you *actually* have to watch is “Hey, Melissa”, which was scrapped for—oh uh um ignore that last bit. “Hey, Melissa” is a completely normal and great episode of Nightmare Time! 😁

Jordan Leigh

If you do react to Nightmare Time I’d say to focus on Watcherworld, Witch in the Web, Killer Track, and Yellowjacket

Atlas Marshall

Personally, yell all you want at “If I Loved You” after that perfect Nat 20 predicting the reprise. ETA: Also NGL, been waiting for the end of epi 4 since hearing where it was going to get cut in the Discord…

Jennee

There's likely not to be another Hatchetfield musical since the other lords are covered in NMT. They were talking about during the TGWDLM kickstarter about doing possibly a few more NMT episodes which they storyboarded but didn't make. The Witch in the Web and Killer Track are the big ones for overall lore. Watcher World is for Blinky (Lauren's Lord), Time Bastard is for Tinky (Curt's Lord), and Honey Queen is for Nibbly (Kim's Lord). If you just want Hannah stuff, then Witch in the Web and Yellow Jacket are the ones about her abilities. You should watch the video for Virginity Rocks because Boy Jerry and Girl Jerri are hilarious in it, but Abstinence Camp isn't big for the underlying lore if you only want to watch a couple. And, absolutely do not watch Jane's a Car. It's very odd I'm glad you loved NPMD. I don't really think of any of the Hatchetfield Trilogy as a "favorite" since I think of them more together than as individuals. They are so well done though, and the writers had a ton of fun with making up lore for this wacky town. I think they really tapped into whatever Lovecraft was smoking minus the rampant racism and classism Edit: I completely forgot that Nibbly was the one behind Honey Queen. I was thinking of it as the church of the starry children. It's been a minute

Allison Watts

Mortius: Why is Max doing Grace's choreography? Me knowing the ending: ..................... I dunno. 👀 The many times Mortius caught the parallels between Max and Grace, and STILL didn't see this coming is GREAT! I was so worried he'd spoil it for himself!

Sunayama

The way you spun around like a twitterpated muppet when Mariah started singing at 11:30 or so, it was too sweet for words 😂

Fantom Tangents

I've never been happier to be a patron agsgscsdhajdh

Louis

So fun fact that makes the ending more fun! This is the first time of the main trilogy where the main cast "wins". Didn't Like Musicals and Black Friday both end in basically worst case scenario (or at the minimum vague bad time line). This one doesnt. They beat the supernatural threat and get to live on. Except then enter Grace. Her line of "rewrite the lore" is more loaded than you think. I do hope you get to experience Noghtmare Time some day. Especially if you wanna see more of the other Lords in Black tee hee 🤪

Katt

I WILL SAY!! Don’t watch the references video if you ARE going to watch some Nightmare Time episodes as they contain spoilers for Time Bastard (and I’m sure more, but I just remembered a big Time Bastard spoiler the video goes over)

Jordan Leigh

I gave my thoughts on the Nightmare Time episodes, but want to take a few seconds just to make a couple more comments. First, I am surprised you didn't mention the red lighting when the mayor got killed or when Max transported to the car. Also, maybe random, but at the end Steph is in a red dress and I believe Pete"s bowtie is also red. Just saying. Similarly, when Grace gives Max his "gift," the lights flicker between red (symbolizing Max) and a whitish color (that symbolizes Grace). Thus is interesting because those are usually the colors that symbolizes Hell and Heaven respectively. It is like a coming +no pun intended) together on middle ground where they equal each other out. Now, that brings me to a final thought. At the end, Grace reprises Max's song and curses openly (she avoided cursing for the most part before spiraling, even covering her mouth when the students curse during the first song). She is even backlit in red during the final song. This makes me thing that when her and Max converged, something shifted to her. Red becomes her color and there is like a transference that happens, in a way. Also, not only does she give Max her chastity that she says she cherished most, but at the same time gives up God/her Christianity. By taking part in the ritual, she was calling on other Gods which is a no no. You are not supposed to worship false idols. She cements everything with premarital sex (with a dead person/demonic entity no less). Thus, she gives up her beliefs and becomes an instrument of destruction that may have transferred to her from Max. I would be curious about your thoughts on this idea.

Kris Shepard

I would agree - if he has to just watch one, I’d suggest this one as well.

Jordan Leigh

Lauren Lopez did the choreography!

Joe Hamrick

My personal song recommendations: Nightmare Time theme song (of course) Jane’s A Car (episode may be…Interesting. But the song is a banger) Axe Man Virginity Rocks! Next Time

Jordan Leigh

Nightmare Time episodes grouped in what you might want to tackle: Pure Lore The Witch in The Web (season 1) Daddy (season 2) (you can hop around this one and just get to the stuff relevant to the Black Book) Killer Track Yellow Jacket (season 2) Lords in Black Watcher World (season 1) (Bliklotep/purple) Time Bastard (season 1) (T’noy Karaxis/yellow) The Witch in The Web (season 1) (book lore) Honey Queen (season 2) (Nibblenephym/pink) Yellow Jacket (season 2) (Pokotho/blue) Expanding on beloved characters Watcher World (season 1) (Bill & Alice) Forever & Always (season 1) (Paul & Emma) Time Bastard (season 1) (Ted - don’t let that discourage you, this is one of The Iconic NT episodes) Honey Queen (season 2) (Linda Monroe) Yellow Jacket (season 2) (Hannah, Lex, and Ethan - another Iconic NT Episode™️) Killer Track (season 2) (characters exclusive to Nightmare Time HOWEVER. The characters are really really good) Don’t bother with Season 2’s “Abstinence Camp”, it’s also Iconic, but it’s largely a rehash of Nerdy Prudes, as it was produced under the idea that NPMD might not be able to get made, so they truncated and changed elements of NPMD for NT so the story could live on in some way. All the character beats are largely the same.

Jordan Leigh

TEN COOL POINTS TO YOU WELL DONE

Mortius

*Claps* BEST REACTION EVER!!! Thank you so much for watching this! This is my favorite Starkid show, and tbh I joined your Patreon to see if you've seen or are willing to have the Hatchetfield universe requested, and that was over a year ago. Your reactions have been the best part of my year. You are my favorite YouTuber. Thank you. When it comes to Nightmare Time, I'm not sure how to really proceed without just watching them. There are some that are skipable, as mentioned before, but others are just really good and connect to lore and the Lords in Black; even some episodes that could be "skipable" or seen as "filler" really aren't. It's like The Last Airbender; it may seem like filler, but it helps paint the big picture. Honestly, I can only think of three I'd be okay with skipping. Gah, I wish I were more help in that regard.

logicaldreamer

The little Song Mortius did at the start reminds me of the Angry Birds Bad Piggies Theme

Janna_the_banana

So early in the show max says he'll never rest until he tastes grace Chasity's little peach, which at the time was a gross line, but was actually foreshadowing

Sara Jarvis

Cinderella Castle or Oregon Trail is a great follow up

Nicholas & Heather

For anyone who may have an interest in helping compile ideas for showing Mortius condensed NMT stuff, here's a Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p-q69PBzSsTCalV1NyMLYgwYeovzAZA-3VrGB27ydE0/edit?usp=sharing

Critical Devil

Learning more about all them will require a foray into Nightmare Time territory. I regret that I remain somewhat lost, and am similarly unwilling to watch the whole thing but I have done some legwork. The blue one is featured in a Nightmare Time that has a great animatic that I can recommend. The animatic is only 30 minutes, I really enjoyed it. https://youtu.be/AI3YkzXD46E?si=6Cz3Tux0Q229xFIg

Tamlin Day

If you don’t know what to put in this time slot yet, I would recommend sticking to NPMD for at least one recording session longer! Other comments in past recordings have mentioned that there’s some really great animations on YouTube to a few of the songs that would be great to see your reaction to. I would also recommend the YouTube video “References and Callbacks in “Nerdy Prudes Must Die” | Starkid” (and part 2) if you don’t want to watch Nightmare Time, as it covers what NT references there are in NPMD.

Jordan Leigh

songs that are a must listen/watch from NT: Theme song, Axe man, and Virginity Rocks And please, someone make a compilation of LiB clips

Mikayla Prushik

Nightmare Time is like Black Mirror. Most stories aren't directly related and there are one or two stories per episode. It's not so much songs or clips that you have to watch, but you can narrow down which stories will help give you the lore you're missing. Overall, Nightmare Time 1 is MOSTLY skippable. It's NMT2 that's the significant part. So here's a quick overview... LiB = Introduces a Lord in Black NMT 1 - Ape-Man (Skippable) - Watcher World (LiB, great story involving Bill and his daughter, but otherwise skippable) - Forever & Always (Centered on Paul and Emma, debatable on if it's skippable, can't help there) - Time Bastard (LiB, MUST WATCH as it answers some of your questions from previous parts) - Jane's a Car (mentions the Black Book, but skippable) - The Witch in the Web (MUST WATCH, Webby and The Black lore) NMT 2 - Honey Queen (LiB, 10/10 story about Linda Monroe, but skippable if you have to) - Perky's Buds (introduces a new character, but it's skippable) - Abstinence Camp (gives context for NPMD, but is skippable) - Daddy (Black Book lore, UNFORTUNATELY... MUST WATCH. Ew.) - Killer Track (Because a certain character's involvement who may become significant in the next musical, this one's MOST LIKELY not skippable) - Yellow Jacket (Must Watch, if I recall but I'm fuzzy on this one) (EDIT: Must watch, gives context for what's happening in TGWDLM, I'm dumb...)

Sunayama

Those are also the exact episodes that I would recommend watching. (Abstinence Camp also has two bangers for songs)

Mikayla Prushik

for the next Starkid Sunday I hope we all take a nice family trip, maybe on a trail to somewhere. maybe Wisconsin?

Slydude71

If you only react to one Nightmare Time story, I would suggest The Witch In The Web, as I think it has the most connective lore of the Hatchetfield Universe. Other stories mostly explore individual Lords in Black and other supernatural elements, but WITW I feel gives the best sense of the big picture.

Ryan Tjarks

There is at least 1 general synopsis of everything you need to know from Nightmare Time on YouTube. That video is something like an hour and a half but it touches everything. Abbie Mary is the creators name and the video is 2 hours and 10 minutes but again, you get everything.

Somedude Watchintv

More fun fact: I don't know if it was an intentional reference or not, but during If I Loved You, Pete says "wake me up when the mean girl is more than mean." A few years before NPMD, Mariah Rose Faith Casillas (Steph) played Regina George in a major production of Mean Girls the musical! Also apologies if anybody else had posted this before I did, for some reason the comments aren't loading. At the time I'm posting this, it says there are 54 comments, but it's only showing me like 9.

Gabriel the Sorcerer

I really think nightmare is gonna be hard to watch just in bits with no context so you may just wanna watch a couple all the way through. I would suggest watching the episode with "Forever and Always" and "Time bastard" that has interesting lore on the world and universes of Hatchetfield, as well as familiar characters and more info on one of the Lords in Black. The only drawback is that its from the first go around of nightmare time so the quality can be a bit janky (but the subtitles work). Honey Queen is another good episode to start on because it has great production (for the height of the pandemic), familiar characters, and again another Lord in Black.

Mikayla Welker

But aside from that, I definitely suggest reacting to the theme song, it's a banger 🤣 The songs are all basically music videos, so any of them could pretty much be reacted to separately from their associated story.

Ashley Evers

Almost all of the Nightmare Time episodes actually contain 2 stories, you're actually only dealing with 1 hour stories. And the nature of them is that they don't really need to be experienced in a specific order. So maybe you could commit to just doing one story (you could cut one in half for 2 half hours segments), have someone make you a list of the story titles (excluding the extra long ones), and make a patreon poll asking which one we think you should start with (where we can make multiple selections preferably, I think that would get the best results). Then repeat the process if that's successful enough.

Ashley Evers

"id grace a twist villain?" i mean kinda but you called that earlier when she was acting CRAZY!!!!!! Like yeah, of course the girl who clung to her religion so aggressively even when she had her doubts would cling to the new gods that she could see and interact with, who kept their promises and empowered her. Who punished those who were wicked right in front of her. Especially when she herself was shown to be okay with brutally dismembering a body as soon as she convinced herself it was Gods will. I absolutely LOVE the religious imagery that Grace and Max both constantly reference and their ties together. if you want more of Grace, Pete, and Steph, the nightmare time ep called "Abstinence Camp" features them (tho pete is played by one of the Lang brothers (the writers).

Mikayla Welker

Who needs sleep when there’s a new episode to watch

Jacob Burbrink

This show was PEAK Starkid, it was incredible watching this whole trilogy as it came out on youtube but I was BLOWN AWAY by NPMD when it came out I was also OBSESSED with the Summoning when the digital ticket was released for this - I remember Tumblr trying to figure out all the lyrics because the digital ticket didn't have subtitles and it was a wild time Also I'm sure this will be posted but the Lords in Black are all brothers (The Langs made actual dolls like the Wiggly Doll in Black Friday for all five Lords) and they are: Pokotho (Pokey; Blue; stone face with blue goo), Bliklotep (Blinky; Purple; one giant eye), T'noy Karaxis (Tinky/The Tinkerer; Yellow; Goat Face; Obsessed with the Spankoffski family and sees humans as toys), Nibblenephim (Nibbly; Pink; Just a big mouth), Wiggog Y'rath (Wiggly; Green; little cthulhu; Wrathful King) The lore from this universe is insane and I love it SO SO much I loved your reactions to these episodes, I love that you put a lot of stuff together as it came up, I just love this musical and I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Also, this is weirdly still the happiest ending of a Hatchetfield musical in the trilogy

Alexandra

I wonder if you'd consider doing some streams for reacting to Nightmare Time. Maybe that exclusively for Patrons, and a 'highlight reel' could be compiled for your channel? I do think you should find a way to watch the episodes, even if on your own time, because you clearly really enjoy the lore and character/world building Nightmare Time gives you!

Holly Zandstra

Mortius, PLEASE even if just for yourself, watch Nightmare Time. There are definitely a few skips, but I can promise you will absolutely love it. My favorite Hatchetfield ship EVER is in Nightmare time, and i’ e watched enough of your reactions to know you’ll love all the lore and character expansion. Even, dare I say it, for Ted? His story is WILD. Someone elsewhere in the comments put a good list together, so I won’t repeat them as to which are skips vs. watch, but PLEASE. I cannot stress this enough.

Johanna Wilson

At 30:40 "why do i know that" That motif is first heard in tgwdlm and used throughout Hatchetfield after, the line "look what happens, nightmare time" from Not Your Seed

The Dormouse

i think there were like 3 songs from nightmare time (including the main opener)

Hand Kun

I want a compilation of every time Mortius threatens a starkid by name. Every time he does it it feels more unhinged and I love it.

Katlyn Steinmuller

I SOBBED the first time I watched it. 😭

Johanna Wilson

Pokey also has Yellow Jacket for backstory too!

Caspian Lavin

"We gotta explore the other lords" what do you think nightmare time is ? 🤔😆

Mellohi

I absolutely pause to process when watching on my own, but definitely not quite AS much as I do on camera. As with almost everything on the channel, it’s the real me, just pushed to an extreme!

Mortius

The lords in black! The lords in black call us!

Atlas Richardson

Question for Mortius: Do you pause to process before moving on just as much without the camera rolling as you do with? Just curious. Because man I'm torn as to whether you would miss more by pausing and breaking up the flow and tension or that you would gain more by not letting a single moment go by without stopping to process it and notice small details of acting and lyrics.

Llexica

It seems to me if the actors are of age and nothing is explicitly being done to make them seem younger then it should be fine to say they're attractive.

Somedude Watchintv

An excellent reaction! So you were right on the money about the Blue Lord In Black, that was the force behind the meteor in TGWDLM, the yellow, pink, and purple ones make prominent appearances in Nightmare Time. In terms of Nightmare Time, I would say it's worth a watch, and if you don't want to watch all of them I'm sure people could whip up a skip list for you. I understand tho if you want to take a break from Starkid for a little bit. Though there is in fact one more Starkid musical that's come out since Nerdy Prudes: Cinderella's Castle, which is really really good, and I'd personally recommend doing that before Nightmare Time.

Kyle Summers

Hello. I am going to try to give you a list of episodes and why they may be good to watch (even though they are all good and give details about Hatchetfield and its lore). Watcher World introduces Blinky (the purple Lord in Black). Forever and Always and Time Bastard should be watched together because they are kind of a two-parter. In the latter, Tinky (the yellow Lord in Black) is introduced, the answer to your question of what he meant by having the whole set of Spankoffskis in his toy box is answered, and you find out about the background of the homeless man. Witch in the Web shows the importance of Webby and gives some more idea about the woods and some characters. In season 2, Honey Queen introduces Nibbly (the pink Lord in Black) and mentions the Church of the Starry Children (StarKid) which is the Waylons' group. Abstinence Camp is a story with Grace, Steph, and Pete (played by Nick Lang). Killer Track introduces the Black Book (among other things) and is just a darn good episode. Finally, Yellow Jacket explains the significance of Pokey (the blue Lord in Black). So, basically that doesn't really help because it is most of them. Now at least you know why they are important.

Kris Shepard

the church of the starry children = starkid(s), lol

oh no elizabeth

There’s an amazing video essay about Grace called Grace Chasity and the Horrors of Purity Culture it’s a phenomenal character breakdown/analysis https://youtu.be/8pa2DTD__N0?si=rDbhCkz1NdY_6S6R

Just fyi, Nightmare time episodes are two separate episodes bundled per video. So you could do 1 hour per "episode" as an unedited thing just for patrons :) and there's not really any songs for them. It's all basically audiobook voice-acted story. Which, for enjoyments sake is SUPER hard to trim down because like any story, the buildup is often more important than the reveal. But for lore's sake, other people would need to suggest priority. If I could suggest a compromise: don't watch it on the channel? Like, watch it for yourself. Have it playing in the background while you do other tasks. We can survive not seeing you squeal at everything.

i know it seems like a lot but "i hope theres more to this trilogy" THATS NIGHTMARE TIME!!!! ITS FOR ALL THEIR PLAYS THAT ARE TOO DIFFICULT TO STAGE!!!! some of them are skippable (ape man) but seriously theres SO MUCH LORE

Mikayla Welker

The other Lords in Black were in Nightmare Time, but they are planning to make more shows, also involving things in Nightmare Time though. It might be hard to pull together coherent clips from Nightmare Time because they effectively are short stories being performed like a radio drama, with only a couple songs per episode on average and for the most part the songs don't tell story on their own, it's difficult to describe it properly. I do hope people come up with a way you could react to Nightmare Time though, it does add so much lore, and there's definitely some episodes which are less relevant and could be skipped or summarized. Worst case scenario, maybe you could get some clips along with summaries from your editor or someone, so you can contextualize the clips better.

Xeph

they also have a bit where they call themselves dikrats (Starkid backwards)

Chris

Only partway through, loving the reaction! Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there’s no “red.” The lords are blue, green, yellow, pink and purple. They’ve also kind of each had their own “shows” already in the forms of Nightmare Times. Purple (Blinky): Watcher World, which is a story that gives lore on him, and focus on Bill and his daughter Alice. Yellow (Tinky): Time Bastard, focuses on Ted, also gives context to the line about having the whole set of Spankoffskis and explains the cheer when Richie said Pete looked like the homeless guy. Pink (Nibbly): Honey Queen, focuses on Linda and her family, and gives a lot of context to the alters and the Church of the Starry Children. I understand if you just want to watch clips, but I figured I’d mention each Lord’s big “show.”

Hannah Williams

Btw the church of the starry children is a play off of Starkid lol

Chris

By any chance, does anyone know the glass Mortius is drinking out of at 5:30? I love the design and would like my own but searching "tall tea glass" doesn't help

Sunayama

I knew the Cool As I Think I Am reprise would get to him. His reactions are so fun to see😂 Dont worry Mortius you were not the only you that cried during this song

Pumpkin Pumpkin

I genuinely think it could be a good idea for you to react to Nightmare Time episode 2 and nothing else. That or the last episode of season 1. You could also always watch them on your own time.

Phoebe Schwerin

Oh my god making him end right before the gunshot is fucking MEAN holy shit😂😂😂

Spencer

Actually a fun fact that doesn’t quite come across in the pro shot. During the Summoning, The Lords in Black actually do dance around in a pentagram kind of formation. In the digital ticket it’s more noticeable but they each have specific dance moves tied to their characters that revolve in a star shape around the group.

LETS GOOO

eli_rhapsody

ok TO BE FAIR TO US: Hot chocolate boy in TGWDLM was played by a different actor Robert Manion (Hidgens) who's no longer associated with Starkid so it still applies lmao

Chris

I highly recommend the Grace Chasity character analysis done by fencecollapsed. It is so good.

Alaina Lomasney

Mortius your pink and yellow musicals are nt episodes

Jem Carstairs

Adding to this: the domain is called "the black and white". And these are the Lord's in BLACK. There is also the White. A singular sister named Webby. The spider that the little girl (Hannah) could speak to during Black Friday.

I think the main theme of the play is how "nerd" is just a title that is given to people by those who want an execuse to abuse them. Like Max told pete "You're a nerd because I say so"

orion

Introducing The Lords in Black! Pokey/Pokotho (Blue): The unnamed antagonist of The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals. Wiggly/Wiggog Y’Wrath (Green): The main antagonist of Black Friday and the ruler of the lords. Tinky/T’noy Keraxis (Yellow): The main antagonist in the NT story Time Bastard Blinky/Bliklotep (Purple): The main antagonist of the NT story Watcher World Nibbly/Nibblenephim (Pink) The main antagonist of the NT story Honey Queen. The Lords in Black are my favourite characters in this series and are absolutely horrifyingly amazing!

Jayden Callaghan

One thing that I think kind of confirms Pete is hot chocolate kid is that the outfit he wears at the beginning of the show is the same as hot chocolate kids

Sophia Barsness

We got him guys its Nightmare Time

Jem Carstairs

I remembered watching this compilation of lords in black moments that could be helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPXBtxiIka4

Kiera Grandell

Even Emma violating Pete’s hot chocolate is a callback in a sense, when she tells Paul in TGWDLM she knows he didn’t come to Beanie’s for the shit coffee: “Our coffee was shit, cause we didn’t care…and sometimes we’d spit in it! You might’ve drank my spit…”

Sarah Rodrigues

They’re not just cheering for Paul and Emma, the motif playing between those scenes is lifted directly from TGWDLM’s “Show Me Your Hands”

Sarah Rodrigues

god, Mortius would ADORE Honey Queen

Olivia Sophia

Love this reaction! And yes, I’m pretty sure it’s been confirmed that Hot Chocolate guy is Pete Spankofski who is also Ted’s little brother

Isabella Nesheiwat

Been checking obsessively for your reaction to If I loved you, easily one of the top 3 Starkid songs

Evan Moran

Fun fact: the Beanies scene for the pro shot was a pick up (not in front of the live crowd), but on the wider camera shots, you can see the actual live scene itself. The way you can tell is that Lauren is wearing a wig for Emma whereas in the pick up, she has her hair done up properly.

Daniel Wilson

I cannot WAIT for your reaction to the Cool As I Think I Am reprise. One of the few times Starkid’s gotten me to legitimately cry, I had to actually pause for a minute to get ahold of myself

Mafidon

For once my notifications work to tell me Mortius is reacting to the end of NPMD

Kkofuji013

Literally checked on here an hour ago when I got off of work and was so sad that my hopes and dreams and slight psychic ability were wrong. I have to wash dishes first, but super excited to see your reaction to the ending. (Also meeting all the Lord's in Black)
