We're so sorry! Totally missed this comment. First off, I'm really sorry to hear about your dad 🥺. It sounds like the last few months have been incredibly tough. I'm glad you're finding time to get back into things you enjoy despite everything you've been handling! Thank you for your thoughts on this! Korra's struggles are definitely more pronounced compared to Aang's. I totally agree with you—on the first watch, it was clear she was constantly challenged down to her core, and it was very frustrating to watch at times. I think it took a second watch to really understand the beauty of her character. Of course, the show isn't perfect and the writing can be a little off, but we really love the message that being the Avatar isn't just about mastering the elements, but mastering yourself in extreme adversity. It was very dark towards the end, and I'm a little biased because I do like darker tones—they feel more realistic to me. Aang's story was about finding peace and balance, while Korra's was about confronting chaos and personal demons. Both are valid, but Korra’s story can be a lot heavier, especially when you're invested in her character. Nonetheless, I totally get where you're coming from, but we did like Season 3 the best! Season 2 would probably be our second favorite. Sorry for the late response again!

2024-08-16 20:37:39 +0000 UTCSorry y'all, I'm finally getting around to commenting on the series as a whole - last 3-4 months was pretty insane with having to take care of my dad up until he passed in June. I still have most of season 3 and all of season 4 to watch along with, but I'm still in the middle of getting "affairs in order", etc. Ok, so all THAT aside... I really like Korra, particularly Season 1, as I said, Season 2 was great as well, but... With Seasons 3 and 4, it does have a great story and plenty of action, and I certainly understand that without conflict of some kind the story can really drop off if she's always winning or whatever. But throughout the series, to me anyway, it feels like she's always had to prove herself more than Aang EVER had to. She picked up the other bending as a kid, so she was already well on her way there. Then Amon took her bending (unlocking her airbending, but still), then she forgot who she was (giving us the excellent history back to Wan, but again, still...), then losing her whole freaking backlog / experience of the previous Avatars, which Dee mentioned at the end of Season 2. Seasons 3 and 4 got even worse for her, getting poisoned and almost killed, and basically losing a couple of years worth of her life to the PTSD of all that happening to her, I think you're getting what I mean. There's "conflict" and then there's hardcore SUFFERING and major mental trauma that she went through just trying to be the Avatar. I think maybe they were trying to make it more of an adult cartoon series, moreso than ATLA was. I mean her overall story, particularly towards the end of Season 2 and most of Seasons 3 and 4 was just really DARK. Still, I love seeing y'all's reactions. What do you two think?

2024-07-18 05:45:52 +0000 UTCKuvira was the catalyst that helped Korra rip open a hole into the spirit world and into Korra's sexuality. I'm kind of glad they developed Korra and Asami's relationship gradually. I wanted that smooch at the end, but it makes sense that they didn't. It was their first time exploring the boundaries of their relationship. And what better way to explore it than in the Spirit World! I imagine that it's similar to dropping acid at Coachella to Blackpink. I think, objectively, that ATLA was a better series, but Korra holds such a special place in my heart. They've added so many new main characters and still managed to develop them beautifully. I mean, I never would have guessed that Varrick and Zhu Li's wedding was going to close off the series finale. But here I am, crying more than real-life weddings. I blame Jeremy Zuckerman for plucking at my heart strings. I was sad that the Avatar journey was over until I realized that I joined during Korra. Now I get to revisit ATLA with y'all! yay me.

2024-07-15 15:30:58 +0000 UTCIn the decade since this episode came out I’ve seen a lot comments from queer people saying they didn’t do enough for Korrasami to be considered good queer representation, and I always like to point out how this was the first western all ages cartoon to have two main female characters end up in a relationship together. I think Bryan Konietzko phrased it excellently on his tumblr post (https://www.tumblr.com/bryankonietzko/105916338157/korrasami-is-canon-you-can-celebrate-it-embrace) back when this episode first aired: Was it a slam-dunk victory for queer representation? I think it falls short of that, but hopefully it is a somewhat significant inching forward. Imo it was a very significant, and necessary, step forward! The news of Korrasami popped up on a sapphic website I frequented back then, and that’s what got me to go back and finish the show! I had stopped after 2x06, right before the Wan episodes, because my friend and I were watching it together, then we both got busy, and I didn’t feel motivated to finish it by myself until I heard about Korrasami. Especially not having seen anything past mid-Season 2, when Korrasami had just been a crack!ship in the fandom.

It just reflects the show for me. It wasn't afraid to change things and it did explore the lore and mess around with it. Also I was like you Dee when I saw the ending scene. I remember thinking they better not put Korra and Mako back together at the last minute but then they gave us Korrasmi, something I was shipping since the beginning. And it's not like it came out of nowhere since even you two have noticed them getting closer these last two seasons. Even Meesh gave a look at one comment you made, Dee, in last season.
