First, thanks for going back and watching the tree scene again so you understood it! Second, Pike is a cleric. They are usually known as the main healers and can also buff their team and can be a tanky holy warrior. Scanlan is a bard and his instrument is how he "casts" his magic. Sam came up with amazing songs he would sing at the table whenever he buffed his group.

And leaving the last scene hanging with just the sound of the ropes creaking as the credits roll is also absolutely brilliant. Bone chilling, but brilliant!
