Whoops! Typos are fun... think I'll leave it :)

Rice roll took me out. 🤣 but great explanation. EXU Calamity is a masterclass of D&D storytelling. It's a longer watch for sure, but so worth it with how invested you both seem to be in the story. 😀

I know "rice roll" was a typo, but I must incorporate it in my next campaign.

When you're looking for table-to-screen comparisons, it looks like https://youtu.be/0AuHfXwTY1M?si=kKv7zX_psZbTYrLw (for the end of last episode) and https://youtu.be/EkLh1K980A0?si=5m93_9JfCxxQMua4 (for the beginning of this one) are really good. I really hadn't realized how many lines were absolutely verbatim from the show. You'll notice that both the players and Matt are rolling dice to see whether the resurrection ritual works, and that Matt is making a point of sticking to the result of the dice. There was *absolutely* a chance Vex would be permanently dead as a result of hitting this random trap. Deaths in D&D don't have to have meaning -- they can just be a bad roll of the dice. I think these videos are spoiler-free for you at this point, though some random bits might be confusing; in particular you'll see Zahra being *much* friendlier -- they were never antagonists at the table. Mary McGlynn, who played Zahra in the original campaign and the animated show, also voice directs the show -- and was watching the entire campaign as it originally happened, texting with the cast.

Keyleth was near death but still alive, so could be simply healed. Vex was dead dead so there was this whole ritual thing. When you are dead dead in D&D it takes quite a bit more to attempt to bring you back. In D&D itself there are several spells that can get the job done depending on the circumstances. But in Critical Role, Matt changed that so it is a skill challenge and a rice roll. So there is a VERY real chance that a character that dies isn't simply being brought back due to a spell. The Matron of Ravens is the Goddess of Death. Tiny bit more than the grim reaper :) Vax was seeing visions of an event in the distant past of Exandria called The Calamity which was also on the mural he saw featuring images of the gods of Exandria. The Calamity saw a LOT of destruction and death, literally changing the surface of the planet. There is a short actual play called "Exandria Unlimited: Calamity" that takes place just before it starts. 3 eps, 4-6 hours each and shouldn't spoil anything from this show if you are interested in something shorter than the typical Critical Role campaign to start with. The Vestiges of Divergence are relics from The Calamity and are named after a subsequent event which I won't go into for possible spoiler reasons.

I love how quickly you are flying through this season! It gets even more hype from here. Also your questions at the end about some of the things that happened will be answered during the rest of the season

Mar

You are one of the very few reactors I've seen recognize Ripley at the end there, well done :)

Simpelicity

The Matron of Ravens = The goddess of death; morally ambiguous but don't wanna say too much for spoiler reasons. Also, the fight with Purvan [the ex champion of the matron of ravens, was deemed a test of kinds.. [also don't wanna spoil that reason] but the vision he had in the temple was "The Calamity", a war between gods, more gods, and people. So he basically got a lore dump and the power of the vestige [Death walker's ward], which happens to be the Matron of Raven's own armour. Which she gave to her champion.

Hey Meesh & Dee , pls allow me a small lore drop (Without Spoilers) if I may :) In the Critical Role Universe (and in the DnD universe in general) , There are many different gods with different jurisdictions/domains . You have already met the Ever-Light :) The Matron of Ravens is the goddess of death, fate, and winter; she is also considered the goddess of twilight, inevitability and the passage of time, presiding over the transition between life and death . When Vox Machina Attempts to take the Vestige (belongs to the Matreon/Her Champion) and Vex Dies , She actually really dies :( They are inside The Matron's temple and that is (Partly) why the revival rite fails , ("Our Gods Have No Authority Here") , the Matron comes to "collect" Vex , yet Vax begs her to the take him instead...however as you saw , for reasons that will be revealed , she let them both live and gives Vax her Powerful Vestige ...but as you can probably guess , Nothing is Free and there is always a price ;) Love your Reactions :) , you guys are awesome!!!
