The Legend of Vox Machina 3x9 | Reaction & Review (UNCUT)

These last few episodes have been PEAK. I love how powerful this show portrays the ancient dragons.. The fact that Thordak was even still alive after Pike's blast is insane.

Joey

"Taste my disease." Reminds me of that one time in Tijuana...

I think that Raishan was out for herself. So she set up this battle of Vox Machina vs Thordak but she didn't care who won, and wouldn't take sides until the end. Once she saw that VM were going to win, she jumped onto the winning team. I think if Thordak had won she'd still have attacked him when he was weak. Can't wait for the next three episodes now, I have no idea what's coming!

There are 8 main characters. Vex, Vax, Percy, Scanlan, Keyleth, Grog, Pike and of course Trinket.

Given they already went to hell, I don't know if we even get TD, other than as a 'guest' character similar to Kash and Zahra. Someone who may just be there to help for a specific moment to help them get something, or even as an easter egg. I'm wondering if they alter Raishan's story and use her as the bridge into the Whispered One arc. Have it be one continuous flow instead of two separate arcs with some filler in the middle. Basically give a heavily altered timeline of events for the next 3 episodes (to resolve the lingering character stuff) and have next season be entirely about the Whispered One.

I have run through a number of possible ways they'll play out the story with Ripley and hopefully return Percy but these guys would leave him dead so you never know.

(Re: Thursdays, from a comment below) Thursday night is so much a part of their franchise, the theme song to campaign 3 is “It’s Thursday Night”. (I’m linking their initial generic non-animated intro for campaign 3 so it doesn’t spoil any of the characters) https://youtu.be/Kpdh5S9myc4?si=zScQfMGnAijc4mmJ

This comment literally just gave Meesh and I chills 🥹 we had no idea that was a “critter” thing or a sort of sign off for Matt. Crazy the irony of things! This community is honestly amazing and for that, we are forever grateful! Can’t wait to watch the final 3 eps with yall next week 💘

A cool thing about Keyleth's "fire armor" is that it isn't fire surrounding her. Her body completely turns into living fire! A fire elemental specifically. It's like an upgrade to her animal forms.

"I look forward to every Thursday, just to watch this." I wonder whether, in the moment you said that, you dimly heard the roar as every watching Critter simultaneously reacted by shouting "Is it Thursday yet"? You may or may not know that's the line Matt signs off every CR episode with. Along with "how do you want to do this?" and "you can certainly try", it's one of Matt's phrases that's become part of our DNA through years of use. It somehow manages to be 'this is not goodbye' and 'the future will be worth waiting for' and 'I'm glad we have this community' and 'can you believe this crazy ride is carrying on for another week', all rolled into one short sentence. For all that came before - the battle, the emotion, the voice acting, the gut-punch of poor Kash - you so closely echoing Matt's words was my personal goosebump moment in this video. Is it Thursday yet?

Bet you guys believe the cast when they said the second half goes even harder now huh xD Loved the reaction ladies, your enthusiasm and affinity for this story as non/new Critters is as entertaining as it is endearing. Look forward to watching the rest of your Critter journey.

In ep. 7 Ripley talked about those guns they were manufacturing receiving souls (example: Ripley kills Percy and soul is now bound to the gun), so when Ripley killed him her gun lying by Percy glowed (remember Orthax did say “I want his soul”). When Kash died the Matron of Ravens was shown with Vax “ shepherding” his soul, when Percy died there was no soul for Vax to shepherd. Therefore VM may be able to bring him back.

Episode count-wise, they have enough material for two more seasons(S4 - TD, S5 - The Whispered One), but I suspect Amazon is only going to give them one more at the very most(Travis and Sam have been pretty vocal about getting people to watch this season to boost ratings enough for Amazon to renew for even a 4th season). I'd be VERY happy to be wrong, but I'm thinking TD will be eps 1-3 and Whispy will be eps 4-12 of season 4 if it happens.

Scanlan: Death in D&D is often just an inconvenience once the players get to a high enough level. Revivify can bring a player back if it can be cast within a minute of death(think of it as a magical defibrillator), Raise Dead within ten days, Resurrection within 100 years, and True Resurrection within 200 years. Each step up gets more and more expensive and difficult to cast. (True Rez costs the rough equivalent of $2.5M USD to cast.) All that preface to say that Scanlan actually did die during the Thordak fight during the game, but they were able to cast one of the spells to bring him back shortly after. But here's the thing: Sam happened to be scheduled to miss the following game for a family vacation. So the reason for the "coma" was just because Sam wasn't there. As soon as Sam returned the game after that, Scanlan woke up. What followed was one of the greatest and most painful moments in CR history, so tissues close by might be a good idea for these last three episodes. Kash: My word did this one hurt. This is new territory for the show. Kash and Zahra did participate in the battle with Thordak in the game, but both survived. I'd like to think they're going to find a way to bring Kash back, but I don't really believe that's going to happen. Having Vax see Kashaw walk into the embrace of the Matron makes me think this death is permanent. As someone who really likes both Kash/Zahra and Will/Mary Elizabeth, that hurts. (FYI, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is the voice director for LoVM and a good friend of the cast.) Percy: I have to believe he's coming back sometime in the next three episodes. They've shown they're willing to change things(Ripley surviving the fight at Glintshore, Kash dying, etc.), but I just can't see them permanently killing a main character at this point. And if I haven't said it before, thanks for the great reactions. I only discovered this channel a couple months ago, but it quickly jumped to one of my favorites when it comes to LoVM reactions. Once the season wraps up, I'll be going through the archives to see what else has been reacted to. Sorry for the post length.

There's ONE thing i noticed. In the last scene, the gun near percy glowed when percy got shot, and when vax showed up, there was no "spirit" percy near the dead body, since Vax is the shepherd of spirits for the matron of ravens. Why do i mention this? Because they intentionally showed Kash getting killed here, with the matron of ravens right behind him, and him looking at his own body and VAX COULD SEE HIM (or at least, felt like he reacted to him). Not to mention that the matron of ravens called out to him in his sleep, almost like there's something "wrong" in the balance of the world... The Matron said in season 2 that there's a balance to life and death, and those who die are carried to the next realm and it's part of the circle... meanwhile, Orthax's guns STEAL the souls of those killed by him or his weapons, almost like it's trespassing on the matron of ravens' balance in the world. And why do i mention THAT? Wellll, i am wondering if percy's body itself did indeed die, but his soul was not carried to the afterlife, but it was almost like a glitch in the matrix, and orthax stole his soul when the gun showed glowing... And I'm wondering if they went on and tried to get rid of ripley and orthax, that percy's soul is freed. Now it's possible the show could revive percy that way, but i'd actually be ok if he didn't get revived, but just ...released, and Vex can then talk to his spirit just ONE LAST TIME and tell him that she loved him and that he'll be waiting for her and he hopes she lives a long life (so no rush, vex!) and he'll always love her and always wait for her, and "That, Vex'allia, is MY truth." as his final words. Vax, after they kill orthax, would then have to step up and shepherd those souls back to the matron of ravens' like they were SUPPOSED to, allowing vax to embrace further more than life and death IS indeed a cycle and balance, and there's eternity in death... so maybe that could also help Keyleth and Vax be even more confident that yes she will outlive them all, but they will always meet again in the afterlife, so they might as well enjoy the time they do have together. At least, that's how I'd think of that story if i wanted to be edgy and not cop out and get Percy back. Mostly because, i think if i read correctly, the voice actor of percy Tallisent had his own thoughts on Percy's death (that i wont elaborate here to avoid spoilers), and maybe the show is trying to take an more narrative approach of "hey, there's no plot armour here, anyone and everyone can be just GONE, overnight."

Whether Thordak was killed this season or not was kind of what I was waiting for to see how many seasons they might possibly do. Seeing him dead, and how much they pack into each episode in general, I feel more like season 4 will be the end.
