Surprisingly, this was our first ever LGBT+ movie we've reacted to on our channel... and DAMN we were so shook at how much we loved this film! If you've seen this movie already (spoiler alert) Dee cried like a baby LOL

2024-10-30 16:38:58 +0000 UTCAbsolutely loved this movie. Shoutout to Martin Healy for the awesome recommendations. This remains to be one of my favorite LGBT+ movies to date. There are a few that stand up next to it, imo. "Moonlight" (2016) and "God's Own Country" comes to mind when I think of movies with amazing cinematography and narrative with LGBT+ themes, "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" (1995)/"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" (1994) are more fun, comedic takes of the genre and I'm just happy the films exist for the queer community. I'm curious too if anyone has some recommendations - I don't have the best knowledge for this genre unfortunately and would love to hear what others might suggest (I've seen the big ones like Blue is the Warmest Color, The Handmaiden, Call Me by Your Name and Brokeback to varying degrees of interest.) The trope of gay, specifically, lesbian longing is overdone in the films that focus on WLW relationships, imo. At least, Id seen it treated cheaply in film before and I was not looking forward to another tragedy, but I'm glad this film went about it's story the way it did. It helps that the raw talent on display from both leading actors was phenomenal. The metaphor with Orpheus/Eurydice completes this film's strong message of love and desire, sustaining the memory of a relationship that could never happen. I've never wanted two fictional people to be together so much while at the same time understanding that their circumstances could not justify them being together. It was the memory of their fleeting romance that was ultimately the goal here and......yeesh. That angst is the good stuff that hits you right in the feels. I laugh because I remembered the drugs during the armpit scene had thrown me way off the first time I saw this. Naturally, I had to Google it immediately after watching the film and found that it was apparently "flying ointment" - a hallucinogenic they used back in the day that was applied to the skin to get high. Imagine Vix vapor rub, but even more fun. Filipino moms around the world would collectively sigh.
