2024-12-13 10:44:30 +0000 UTCSo, RPGs and ADHD. I have inattentive ADHD and run/play RPGs with my partner. It works. The thing is, RPGs are collective story-telling exercises and really you play them in the way that works for you. For some, that can be character-based improv storytelling. For others, it's an exercise in applied spreadsheets, maximising the potential damage from each dice roll, with little focus on character. Also, a variety of RPGs are available - for example, Critical Role is releasing its own game in Spring, Daggerheart, that leans into the storytelling approach and away from detailed rules. CR is stuck at the table just because of the nature of broadcasting a show(staying in the camera frame). In fact, when asked about the things they DON'T like about going from a home game to a streamed show, Matt often says he misses getting up and moving around.

2024-12-12 23:45:07 +0000 UTCWhy was Ashley(and the others) so excited about succeeding on Divine Intervention? With Divine Intervention, the player rolls a percentile die. In real world terms, this means you roll two 10-sided dice marked 0-9. The first one gives you the tens, the second gives you the ones. So rolling a 6 then a 9 would be 69. (rolling 0-0 means 100) In order to succeed on a Divine Intervention roll, the player has to roll at or BELOW their cleric level. At the time, Pike was a level 13 cleric. So she had only a 13% chance of making that roll. When she rolled a 0 on the first roll, that meant she rolled under 10 and it was going to work(unless she rolled a 0 on her second roll to make it 100). A cleric can go an entire campaign without ever succeeding on a Divine Intervention roll, which is why everyone was so excited for Ashley(plus it's a super-powerful ability when it works). Clerics get the ability to try at level 10, so this might have been Ashley's first attempt.

Most importantly in this case, Percy's death by Ripley actually occurs much earlier in the game and before Percy and Vex became an actual couple. They had been flirting, but the late night "talk" hadn't happened yet. So when Vex confesses her love during the ritual, that's new territory. Second, there was a chance the ritual would fail even if all the rolls went well. Taliesin had decided that Percy had come to a place where he could rest peacefully. The Briarwoods and Co. had been killed and his family avenged, his sister was alive and running a Whitestone that was now safe-ish, Ripley was dead, and Percy believed the group would eventually succeed in taking down the rest of the dragons. Tal was very willing to let Percy go and create a new character. So Tal sat in the green room and watched the others perform the ritual. If they rolled high enough AND made a strong enough case for Percy to return, then he'd text a message to Matt that the ritual had worked. But if either the rolls went bad OR they tried to appeal to Percy in the wrong way, then he would remain dead. One big appeal that wouldn't work was religion. Percy didn't follow a god or put much stock in them. Any appeal to religion was pretty much an automatic fail. Matt knew this, and you can see him trying to nudge Ashley a bit when she starts appealing to her god. In the end, Vex's declaration of love is what did it. Percy could ignore a lot of stuff, but he couldn't ignore that.

2024-12-12 22:39:51 +0000 UTCRe: Goldfish scene/everyone had died before What Matt is referring to is that every member of VM had died at least once individually at some point in the campaign up to that point. (The goldfish scene actually happens well after the defeat of Thordak.) The topic had just come up a couple weeks before on their aftershow at the time(Talks Machina), and Marisha said she wouldn't mind Keyleth being the last one to die, but she just wanted it to be epic and not stupid. Well... lol So: 1. Pike - Died and was revived during the home campaign before the game became a streamed show. This was when her hair turned from black to white. 2. Grog - In the game, he actually dies when he resists Craven Edge instead of just becoming weak. 3. Vex - In the tomb of Purvan/Matron of the Raven temple 4. Percy - Killed by Ripley. 5. Scanlan - In the game, he actually dies during the Thordak/Raishan fights instead of just being knocked out. 6. Vax - Happened when [selfredactedspoiler] ;) (I doubt it will happen the same way in the show, but just in case...) 7. Keyleth - Jumps off a cliff and splats on the rocks when she could have switched into any other flying creature. - And I love it. :D BTW, was some of the goldfish scene reaction cut off? It ended abruptly and was missing some of the funniest bits that came after(Liam's reaction to Matt's sound effects for one). Plus I would have thought M&D would have been shown the quick goldfish shot from the end of Scanlan's mansion song which is the reason the scene is included in the season 3 table to show compilations.

Details are out there but it requires a skill challenge to make the target Matt has to beat with a roll lower and each time someone is brought back, it makes the next attempt that much harder. During combat you can quickly revive someone but if they've been dead longer than that this is what it takes.
