The TRUTH About my Dumb-i-fied iPhone (4 Months Later)

It's been 4 months since I dumb-i-fied my iPhone and the most common questions I get are am I still doing it and how can YOU do the same?

Today I'm answering both of those questions and mentioning a few other things I've changed as well.

NOTE: This is the Patreon Edit which does not include a sponsor.

The home page of my phone is only the stuff i need to use everyday or every other day. Everything else is in folders on other pages so my distractions are decreased.

Thanks B Shaw.. you are nailing it...thats coming from a 43 year old...preach...Message!!!

At least for music I bought an iPod 6th gen and modded the hell out of it, new case, new battery, sd card adapter, running with rockbox and 512GB just fine. This was because of your video back then (and this is how I discovered dankpods :D). I am not trying to f*ck around with iOS and mp3/flac files, didn't even try to find a proper music player app. Rockbox is just fine because it was made for listening to music, same for the original iPod software. I just hit play and listen to a whole album without distraction, it is just a different way of consuming music. But let's be honest: Getting files onto that thing isn't that convienient than just stream it. And you need to buy/rip music by yourself, it is a little bit of work but it "feels" more like that I own this files. For example: It is impossible to get the original version of "The red" from Jaylib on any streaming service (besides Youtube...), I ripped my original CD and got it on the iPod, same goes for 1st Infantry album from The Alchemist - it just disappeared on streaming services. Streaming means consuming, not owning - so thank you for pointing me into the right direction. Not sure if I am able to dumbify my phone though but I already got most notifcations off and use focus most of the day.

Love the series but I’m still scared to try. Call me an iPhone (slightly) functional addict!

So glad to hear this!

Hey, I happened across your series on this like a week after I kinda had a very similar experience. Mine had more to do with wasting time on Youtube and TikTok. I’m like a week and a half in, I just received my campsnap camera yesterday and I love it! Thanks for this series, man. Your story is so similar to mine, it’s weird but I’m sure there are thousands more that could use a dummy phone. The clarity I feel already is amazing and the lack of brain fog is kinda unreal.

Hey it's all about choices - if you HAVE to have the Patreon app on your phone, I'm not gonna argue with you 😂

Brandon Shaw

If I dumify my phone I won't be able to watch these awesome videos on the fly, can't do it!!

I have some experience with making my (work)phone black & white, and I agree with you that it takes a lot of the attraction away. It’s a great and simple step.

Dumbified my phone when the first videos dropped. I havent been sticking to it as much as you have, but i was definitely happier when my phone was dumber. I also use my ipod for 95% of my listening experiences

Another small shift - I turned off the "rise to wake" feature, as well as "Tap to wake" - now the only way to turn my screen on is to hit the side button. Helps me resist constantly looking at it

Brandon Shaw

It seriously is!

Useful information. No joke, having your own washer/dryer is major.

John Rodriguez

Good follow up on the pro/con balance of mobile screen world!

Josh Nelson

Great video. Was wondering how this went. Turning of notifications is key for me. I get hardly any. The hardest part is avoiding picking up my phone to distract myself.

Dugg

This is a great update. I started using an iPod around the same time you did (for different reasons) and it's cool to hear how things have changed or stayed the same since you first started.
