Extended: Sweating Eric B & Rakim's Technique

NOTE: This is the Extended Edit which is 2 mins longer and does not include a sponsor.

Eric B and Rakim are a crucially important part of hip hop history. From the layers of jazz samples in the production, to the next level rhyming of Rakim, they moved the needle forward. Today we’re looking at their 1992 song “Don’t Sweat The Technique”, diving into the production, recreating the beat, picking apart Rakim’s rhymes, seeing how this was a huge evolutionary step for hip hop… I mean, I guess we ARE going to sweat the technique.

One of my FAVS from Eric B & Rakim! ❤️❤️❤️ Another cool video! But just a quick note.... Instead of going to Kurtis Blow, maybe you should've went back to the Treacherous Three w/Kool Moe Dee. Rakim's rapping style (along with Big Daddy Kane's) is definitely influenced by Kool Moe Dee. He was doing that back in the late 70s. If you have the time for a really good history lesson on one of the old school masters, check out Jayquan's Foundation lesson on Kool Moe Dee. You'll hear all the rhyme schemes he came up with and how others improved on it or just copied it. He breaks down KMD's rap style just like you broke down Rakim's...👍🏾👍🏾 https://youtu.be/CTjMVtXoPXY?si=xBm52J0jjeC44hg7

I'm a west coast 80s baby and never really got into rakim but always acknowledged the respect he gets as a lyricist. Em is my goat and to think this dropped only 6 years prior is wild

Oh man, going back to Curtis and sHill - late 70s/E80s. This ep. is gonna be great! At risk of a mini-hijack, and you probably have somewhere...what about going back, in a future ep., to '73-ish Bronx, 'Herc and the park, with taped off record sections, "breaking the beats", while cross fading from one "break beat" to the other. Then a step further back to Jamaican moble "Sound System" culture from the 50s/60s forward.... : )

Look out... now we're into some greats from the Boomer and X generation's era! ❤️

I love that Wyclef was in the video on the bass. Eric B. & Rakim were the first hip hop act I heard as a kid. I'll always have them (or at least Rakim) as my #1.
