ohh i did not remember that line in silence in the library until you brought it up now!! also yes, that line of rory's stuck with me and you're right that is exactly what clara's doing here!

If you remember way back to the Silence in the Library two parter, River suggests the doctor "try the red setting" on his sonic to which the doctor says, "it doesn't have a red setting!" and she replies "it will do" while holding up the sonic screwdriver he gave/will have given her (according to what she says in that episode). Cold War is the first time we see the primary sonic screwdriver glow red. It's just a cool bit of subtle continuity that somewhere between the day he learned the red setting would exist and whatever point in the future River obtains it, they low-key showed that he invented it by now. I also can't help but think back to something Rory said while watching this episode: "that's what's so dangerous about you- you make people want to impress you." That's a paraphrase but I feel like he really clocked the doctor with that one and it's exactly what's happening here. Clara is putting herself in danger, clearly eager to impress. It all worked out and I'd argue the companion *should* have a proactive role in the adventures rather than just being an accessory or a narrative object to rescue but still. It was just such an astute read of the doctor/companion dynamic that I don't think I've ever heard any other character call out. And it continues to be an evergreen critique.

I know the Doctor tells Clara that he wasn't testing her, but that smile on his face when she volunteers to go in to talk to Skaldak says differently. Part of me wants to binge ahead, and that kind of surprises me because, despite introducing one of my all time favorite companions, I don't have fond memories of this season or the ones to come; or what little I remember anyway, since I haven't seen any of these since they originally aired. But I'm really enjoying this rewatch and so looking forward to how wrong I might have been with the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong, and I don't want to set up any negative vibes, I love Doctor Who and the show as a whole, but I felt like the writing took a big hit starting with this season...and that just hasn't been true this time around. Aside from a couple of episodes this season *cough* Dinosaurs on a Spaceship/Town Called Mercy *cough* it's all been great. I like being proved wrong. Maybe I've just mellowed out in my old age...
