A scenario that's been on my mind is of a time loop, where they are fully conscious and forced to relive the same session over and over. Or maybe their sensations are being recorded with magic or sufficiently advanced technology, so that every time they loop they are forced to relive their past torment on top of their current one, until by the time they're five or six iterations in they're a babbling mess before it even properly begins.
