Destroyer Through The Multiverse Ch 20

Tony Stark slouched in his chair, glass of scotch in hand. The amber liquid swirled as he contemplated the mess his life had become. Across from him, Nick Fury sat ramrod straight, his one good eye fixed on Tony.

"Your old man," Fury began, "Howard Stark. He was a complicated man."

Tony snorted. "That's putting it mildly."

Fury ignored the interruption. "He had vision, Tony. Vision that extended far beyond his time."

"Yeah, well, his 'vision' didn't include much time for his son," Tony muttered into his glass.

"Maybe not," Fury conceded. "But he left you something far more valuable than his time."

Tony raised an eyebrow. "What, the company? The fortune? The crippling daddy issues?"

Fury leaned forward, his voice low and intense. "Knowledge, Stark. He left you knowledge."

"Cryptic as ever, Fury. Care to elaborate?"

Fury took a sip of his drink. "The arc reactor. Your father saw its potential long before anyone else. He knew it could change the world."

Tony felt a familiar tightness in his chest. The very thing keeping him alive was also killing him. "Fat lot of good that does me now."

"You're not seeing the big picture, Stark," Fury pressed. "Howard didn't just leave you blueprints. He left you a roadmap to something bigger."

Tony's mind raced, despite the alcohol clouding his thoughts. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying your father was on the verge of a breakthrough. A new element, Tony. One that could revolutionize clean energy and save your life in the process."

Tony stared at Fury, disbelief warring with a spark of hope. "A new element? That's impossible."

Fury's lips quirked in a half-smile. "Impossible for most. Not for a Stark."

Tony set down his glass, his mind already whirring with possibilities. "How? Where do I even start?"

"Your father left clues," Fury said, producing a worn leather case. "It's up to you to piece them together."

As Fury handed over the case, Tony felt a weight lift from his shoulders. For the first time in months, he had a direction, a purpose beyond his own self-destruction.

"Why now?" Tony asked, his fingers tracing the edges of the case. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner?"

Fury stood, downing the last of his drink. "Sometimes, Stark, a man needs to hit rock bottom before he can see the way up."

As Fury turned to leave, Tony called out, "Fury. Thanks."

The SHIELD director paused at the door. "Don't thank me yet, Stark. You've got work to do."

With that, Fury was gone, leaving Tony alone with his thoughts and a case full of his father's secrets. The arc reactor hummed in his chest, a constant reminder of the ticking clock. But now, for the first time in a long while, Tony Stark felt something he'd almost forgotten.

Hope.

Tony Stark rifled through the dusty boxes, his hands trembling slightly as he pulled out old blueprints and faded photographs. The smell of aged paper and leather filled the air. Beside him, Tatsuya sorted through another pile, occasionally holding up an item for Tony's inspection.

"Find anything interesting?" Tony asked, his voice gruff with barely concealed emotion.

Tatsuya shook his head. "Not yet. But there's still a lot to go through."

Tony nodded, turning back to the box in front of him. His fingers brushed against something cold and metallic. Curious, he pulled out an old film reel canister.

"Hey, what's this?" he muttered, more to himself than to Tatsuya.

Tatsuya looked over. "A film reel? Maybe it's worth watching."

Tony stared at the canister for a long moment, his mind racing. What could be on this reel? More of his father's endless lectures? Or something else entirely?

"Yeah," he said finally. "Let's see what we've got."

They set up the projector, the whir of the machine filling the silence. As the film flickered to life, Tony's breath caught in his throat. There, larger than life, was his father, Howard Stark.

Howard's voice filled the room, smooth and confident as he spoke about the Stark Expo. Tony watched, a mix of emotions swirling in his chest. Pride, resentment, curiosity - all battling for dominance.

Then, unexpectedly, the footage changed. Howard fumbled with his lines, laughing at his own mistakes. Tony leaned forward, fascinated. He'd never seen this side of his father before.

Suddenly, a small figure darted across the screen. Tony's eyes widened as he recognized himself as a child, gleefully messing up the model of the Expo. He couldn't help but chuckle at the sight.

But it was what came next that truly shook him. Howard looked directly at the camera, his expression softening.

"Tony," Howard began, and Tony felt his heart skip a beat. "I built this for you. And someday you'll realize that it represents a whole lot more than just people's inventions. It represents my life's work. This is the key to the future."

Tony listened, transfixed, as his father continued. Howard's words washed over him, filled with pride, hope, and... love. Love that Tony had never truly felt from his father before.

"What is and always will be my greatest creation... is you."

The film flickered out, leaving Tony in stunned silence. He blinked rapidly, trying to process what he'd just seen and heard. All these years, he'd thought his father saw him as nothing more than a disappointment. But this... this changed everything.

Tatsuya's voice broke through his thoughts. "Tony? Are you okay?"

Tony nodded slowly, not trusting himself to speak just yet. He felt as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders, replaced by a warmth he couldn't quite describe.

For the first time in years, Tony Stark felt truly at peace with his father's memory. And with that peace came a renewed sense of purpose. Howard had left him more than just a legacy of inventions and innovations. He'd left him a challenge, a key to the future.

And Tony was ready to unlock it.

Tatsuya watched Tony's face as the film reel flickered to a stop. The man's eyes glistened with unshed tears, his expression a mix of shock and something deeper. Tatsuya felt a twinge in his chest. He'd heard bits and pieces about Tony's relationship with his father. It hadn't been easy.

Tony blinked rapidly, clearing his throat. "Well, that was... unexpected."

Tatsuya nodded, giving Tony a moment. He busied himself with the projector, carefully rewinding the film.

"You know," Tony said, his voice low, "I always thought he was disappointed in me. That I wasn't good enough."

Tatsuya turned, meeting Tony's gaze. "Fathers can be complicated."

Tony chuckled, but it lacked humor. "That's an understatement." He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it further. "But this... I never knew he felt that way."

Tatsuya felt a warmth spread through him. He was glad Tony had this moment, this revelation. It didn't erase the past, but it offered something new. Hope, maybe. Or closure.

Tony stood abruptly, energy radiating off him. "I need to see Pepper. Can you drive me to Stark Industries?"

Tatsuya nodded, already reaching for his keys. "Of course."

They made their way to the garage in silence. Tatsuya could almost hear the gears turning in Tony's head. As they settled into the car, Tony spoke again.

"You know, I always thought I knew everything about him. Turns out, I didn't know a damn thing."

Tatsuya started the engine, pulling out onto the sun-drenched road. "Sometimes, it takes time to understand our parents."

Tony hummed in agreement, his gaze fixed on the passing scenery. Tatsuya drove, giving Tony space with his thoughts. The revelation about his father seemed to have sparked something in the man. A new determination, perhaps.

As they neared Stark Industries, Tony stirred. "Thanks, by the way. For being here through all this."

Tatsuya nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "That's what friends are for."

Tatsuya pulled the car into the Stark Industries parking lot. Tony fidgeted with a bag of strawberries he'd insisted on buying from a street vendor. The man's nervous energy filled the car.

"You sure about those?" Tatsuya asked, eyeing the fruit.

Tony shrugged. "Pepper likes strawberries."

Tatsuya raised an eyebrow but said nothing. He'd noticed Pepper's aversion to strawberries before, but it wasn't his place to correct Tony.

They made their way through the sleek lobby. Tatsuya hung back as Tony approached Pepper's office. He caught a glimpse of Natasha inside, playing her role as Natalie Rushman perfectly.

"Wait here," Tony said, gripping the strawberries tightly.

Tatsuya nodded, settling into a chair outside the office. He couldn't hear much through the thick glass, but Tony's animated gestures told enough of a story. The conversation didn't seem to be going well.

A few minutes later, the door swung open. Pepper stormed out, Natasha close behind. Tatsuya's eyes met Natasha's for a brief moment. They shared a look of understanding, both aware of the precarious situation unfolding.

Pepper's heels clicked down the hallway, her frustration evident in every step. Natasha followed, her movements graceful and controlled. Tatsuya wondered, not for the first time, about her true role in all of this.

Tony's voice broke through his thoughts. "Hey, get in here. I need your help with something."

Tatsuya entered the office, finding Tony staring at a large model of the Stark Expo. The strawberries sat forgotten on Pepper's desk.

"We need to get this back to the house," Tony said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "I think I've figured something out."

Tatsuya recognized that look. It was the same one Tony got when he was on the verge of a breakthrough. Whatever had happened with Pepper, it seemed Tony had stumbled onto something important.

"Sure," Tatsuya said, moving to help Tony lift the model. "What exactly are we looking at here?"

Tony grinned, the expression transforming his face. Gone was the dejected man from moments ago. In his place stood a scientist on the brink of discovery.

"This, my friend, might just be the key to everything."
