Gaio ch 13
Added 2024-08-12 00:13:10 +0000 UTCRiku sat on his bed, eyes fixed on the ceiling of his small room above the cafe. The past few days had been a whirlwind - a dizzying mix of emotions and new experiences that left him reeling. He'd barely had time to catch his breath, let alone process everything that had happened since acquiring the Gaio Driver and his secret trips to the Nexus.
His phone buzzed, snapping him out of his thoughts. Riku glanced at the screen and saw Aiko's name flashing. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he answered.
"Hey, Aiko," he said, sitting up.
"Riku! How've you been?" Aiko's cheerful voice came through the speaker. "It's been a while since we last went on a hunt together."
Riku felt a pang of guilt. He'd been so caught up in his own adventures that he'd neglected his friends. "Yeah, it has been. Sorry about that. I've been... busy, you know?"
"No worries," Aiko replied, her tone softening with concern. "Actually, that's why I'm calling. I've got a proposition for you."
Riku's interest piqued. "Oh? What kind of proposition?"
"Well, I know things have been tough for F-rank Hunters lately," Aiko said. "I thought you might need some help, so I've put together a group for an E-rank Hollow clearing. Want in?"
Riku hesitated. On one hand, he didn't really need the money anymore, thanks to his secret windfall. But on the other, he missed hunting with Aiko and the others. Plus, it would look suspicious if he suddenly stopped taking jobs.
"Who else is in the group?" he asked, buying time to decide.
"It's me, you if you're in, and three others," Aiko explained. "We've got a good balance of skills. Should be a smooth run."
Riku made up his mind. "Count me in," he said, trying to sound enthusiastic. "It'll be good to hunt with you again."
"Great!" Aiko exclaimed. "Meet us at the Bureau tomorrow at 9 AM. We'll go over the details then."
After they hung up, Riku flopped back onto his bed. How was he going to hide his new abilities from his friends? And more importantly, should he?
...
Riku stepped through the doors of the Hollows & Hunters Bureau, his new armor gleaming in the morning light. A mix of excitement and nerves stirred within him as he made his way inside. It had been a while since he'd hunted alongside others, and he worried about accidentally revealing his newfound powers.
As he scanned the bustling crowd, he spotted Aiko waiting near the mission board. Her face lit up when she caught sight of him, and she waved him over enthusiastically.
"Riku! Over here!" she called out.
He weaved through the other Hunters, nodding politely at those who glanced his way. When he reached Aiko, she pulled him into a quick, friendly hug.
She has dirty blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail, gentle hazel eyes that exude kindness and nurturing warmth. She is wearing a fitted blouse in soft pastels under a stylish coat that falls to mid-thigh. She pairs this with a knee-length skirt and sturdy boots.

"It's so good to see you," she said, stepping back to give him a once-over. "Wow, nice gear! You've been doing well for yourself, huh?"
Riku felt his cheeks warm slightly. "Oh, uh, yeah. I've had some luck lately."
Aiko beamed at him, her hazel eyes sparkling with genuine happiness. "That's great! I'm so pleased for you." She glanced around the bustling room. "The others should be here soon. I can't wait for you to meet them."
Riku watched as three figures approached their spot near the mission board. He recognized Aiko's friendly wave and widening smile.
"Perfect timing!" she said. "Riku, I'd like you to meet our team for today's mission."
Aiko gestured to a tall, muscular man with short-cropped hair and a thick beard. "This is Kento Sato. He's our tank for the mission."
Kento extended a calloused hand, his grip firm as he shook Riku's. "Nice to meet you, kid. Aiko's told us a lot about you."
Next, Aiko introduced a striking woman with long, jet-black hair. "This is Akane Yamamoto. She's our mage."
Akane nodded politely, her eyes seeming to assess Riku. "Hello, Riku. I look forward to working with you."
Finally, Aiko turned to a lean young man with spiky hair and piercing green eyes. "And last but not least, this is Shinji Ishida. He's our scout."
Shinji grinned and clapped Riku on the shoulder. "Hey there! Always good to have fresh blood on the team."
Riku nodded to each of them in turn, feeling a bit overwhelmed by their presence. They all seemed so much more experienced and confident than he was.
"It's great to meet you all," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "Thanks for having me on the team."
Aiko's warm smile reassured him. "We're glad to have you, Riku. Now, let's go over the mission details, shall we?"
Riku listened as Aiko talked. Her voice was clear and strong. Riku felt nervous inside, but he tried not to show it.
"We're going after an E-rank hollow," Aiko said, looking at the group. "It's been giving hunters a hard time. No one's cleared it yet."
Riku raised his eyebrows. An E-rank hollow that no one could beat? That was strange. He felt excited, but also worried.
Kento crossed his arms and frowned. "Any idea why it's so tough?"
Aiko shook her head. "The reports are vague. Hunters say the place is weird. The environment changes, making it hard to get around."
Shinji leaned against the wall, grinning. "Sounds like fun. I'm in."
Akane stayed quiet, her dark eyes thoughtful.
Aiko went on, "Here's the plan. Kento, you'll be up front. Your job is to take the hits and keep the thing's attention. Akane, you'll back him up with magic. Shinji, scout ahead and let us know what's going on."
She looked at Riku and smiled. "Riku, you and I will help out where we can. We'll help Kento with the small stuff and watch Shinji's back if he needs it."
Riku nodded. He tried to look more confident than he felt. He could feel the driver inside him. Could he really keep it a secret while working with the others?
Riku took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts. "Any questions?" Aiko had asked, her gentle voice cutting through the tension. When no one spoke up, she clapped her hands together, a determined glint in her eye. "Alright then. Let's gear up and head out. The hollow entrance is about an hour's drive from here."
As the others dispersed to gather their equipment, Riku hung back, his mind churning. He'd have to be careful not to rely too heavily on his new powers as Gaio, but at the same time, he couldn't let the team down if things got dangerous. Aiko approached him, concern etched on her delicate features. "You okay, Riku? You look a bit pale."
Riku forced a smile, hoping to mask his nerves. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little nervous, I guess. It's been a while since I've hunted with a team." Aiko placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, her warm touch calming his jittering nerves. "Don't worry. We've got your back. Just stick to the plan, and we'll be fine."
Riku nodded, grateful for her support. As they walked towards the Bureau's garage, he couldn't help but wonder what challenges lay ahead in this mysterious hollow. The team piled into a rugged SUV, with Kento taking the wheel. Riku gazed out the window as they drove, watching the bustling urban landscape gradually give way to sparser suburbs and eventually open countryside. He steeled his resolve, determined to prove himself and protect his newfound allies.
Riku watched as the conversation in the vehicle unfolded around him. Shinji's jokes and Kento's tales of past hunts did little to ease the tension coiling within him. Even Akane's occasional dry comments failed to distract him from the swirling thoughts that consumed his mind.
As they neared their destination, the mood shifted palpably. The banter died down, replaced by a focused silence that seemed to crackle in the air. Riku could feel the weight of the situation bearing down on him, a heavy burden that threatened to overwhelm his senses.
When Kento finally pulled the SUV off the main road and onto a dirt track, Riku's heart began to race. After a few minutes of bumpy driving, they came to a stop in a small clearing, and Riku's eyes were drawn to the shimmering, translucent barrier in the center - the entrance to the hollow.
"We're here," Kento announced, his voice gruff and serious, snapping Riku back to the present.
As the team exited the vehicle, Riku patted his side, feeling the reassuring presence of the Gaio Driver beneath his armor. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenge that lay ahead.
Aiko gathered them in a circle for a final briefing, her eyes meeting each of theirs in turn. "Remember the plan," she said, her voice calm and resolute. "Stay alert, stick together, and don't take unnecessary risks. We don't know exactly what we're dealing with in there, so be prepared for anything."
Riku nodded along with the others, his heart pounding in his chest. As they approached the hollow's entrance, he couldn't shake the feeling that this hunt would be unlike any he had experienced before. The weight of the unknown pressed down on him, but he was determined to face it head-on, no matter the cost.
...
Riku squinted as the group stepped through the shimmering portal, leaving the mundane world behind and entering the eerie depths of the E-rank hollow. The familiar landscape vanished, replaced by the oppressive darkness of a vast cave system.
The air was damp and heavy, carrying the faint scent of moss and mineral-rich stone. Echoes of water droplets falling in distant chambers created an unsettling ambiance that set everyone on edge.
"I can't see a thing," Shinji said, a hint of nervousness in his usually confident voice.
Akane's calm tone responded, "Allow me." With a soft incantation, a small orb of pale blue light materialized above her outstretched palm, casting long shadows across the rough cave walls and revealing the glistening stalactites hanging from the ceiling.
As their eyes adjusted to the dim light, Aiko instinctively moved closer to Riku, placing a reassuring hand on his arm. "Stay close," she whispered, her breath warm against his ear. "We need to watch each other's backs in here."
Riku nodded, grateful for her presence.
Kento, his heavy armor clanking softly, took the lead. "Let's move," he grunted, his deep voice echoing off the cavern walls. "The fiends won't hunt themselves."
The group began to make their way deeper into the cave system, with Riku and Aiko following behind Kento. Akane's magical light bobbed gently above them, while Shinji brought up the rear, his keen eyes scanning for any signs of danger.
Riku and Aiko trudged onward, unaware of the sinister expressions that passed between their three companions. As Kento led the way, a malicious grin crept across his lips, hidden by the shadows cast by Akane's light. Behind them, Akane's eyes gleamed with a malevolent intensity, reflecting more than just the glow of her magic. And at the rear, Shinji's face twisted into a mask of cruel anticipation, his scout's vigilance focused not on external threats, but on the unsuspecting pair before him.
The cave seemed to close in around them as they ventured deeper, the air growing thick and the shadows deepening. Riku felt a shiver run down his spine, an inexplicable unease settling over him. He glanced at Aiko, wondering if she sensed it too, but her face showed only concentration and determination.
Little did Riku and Aiko realize that the true danger in this hollow might not be the fiends they had come to hunt, but the very teammates they trusted to watch their backs.
