Gaio ch 19
Added 2024-08-12 22:36:38 +0000 UTCGaio stood his ground against the Venomous Snake Worm. The creature's eyes glinted with malice, its wounds only fueling its rage. For a tense moment, they faced off, each waiting for the other to make the first move.
The Snake Worm struck first, its tail lashing out with lightning speed, aiming to crush Gaio against the cavern wall. But Gaio's enhanced reflexes kicked in, and he dove and rolled out of harm's way. The tail smashed into the rock, sending debris flying.
Springing back to his feet, Gaio braced himself for the next assault. The Snake Worm's eyes began to glow with an eerie green light, and Gaio felt a strange pull, his vision blurring slightly. He realized the creature was trying to hypnotize him. Shaking his head, Gaio fought against the mental assault, grateful for the Gaio Driver's protection.
Breaking free from the hypnotic effect, Gaio charged forward. The Snake Worm, surprised by his resistance, reared back. Its mouth opened wide, and a spray of acid shot forth. Gaio raised his arms, the acid sizzling against his armor but unable to penetrate it.
The creature's acid attack caught Gaio off guard. He needed to be more cautious. As he circled the Snake Worm, looking for an opening, the ground beneath his feet began to shift. The beast had burrowed its tail underground, and now it erupted beneath Gaio, sending him flying.
Gaio hit the ground hard but quickly rolled to his feet. The Snake Worm's burrowing ability made it even more dangerous. He had to stay alert, watching both the creature and the ground around him.
The battle raged on, with Gaio dodging acid sprays and hypnotic attacks while trying to land blows of his own. The Snake Worm's tough scales deflected most of his strikes, but Gaio noticed the wounds from earlier were slowing it down.
As they fought, Gaio began to understand the rhythm of the creature's attacks. Its tail strikes were powerful but predictable. The acid sprays left it vulnerable for a moment. And each time it attempted its hypnosis, it remained stationary.
Gaio feinted to the left, prompting the Snake Worm to lash out with its tail. At the last second, he leaped over the attack, landing on the creature's back. The Snake Worm thrashed wildly, trying to dislodge him. Gaio held on, looking for a weak spot in its armored hide.
The beast reared up, nearly vertical, in an attempt to throw Gaio off. As it did, Gaio saw his chance. The underside of its jaw, where he had struck earlier, was less protected. He readied himself for a powerful strike, knowing he might only get one shot at this.
Gaio clung to the Snake Worm's back as it thrashed wildly. He knew he had to act fast. The creature's scales were tough, but he had spotted a weakness beneath its jaw. With determination burning in his eyes, Gaio prepared to unleash the full power of his Vanguard form.
He felt the surge of energy as he activated his Exo-Armor ability. The armor segments shifted, enhancing his agility and durability. Gaio's movements became more fluid, allowing him to maintain his grip on the thrashing beast with ease.
"Exo-Armor," the Gaio Driver announced.
As the Snake Worm reared up, Gaio saw his opportunity. He channeled mana into his legs, preparing for a powerful kick. "Vanguard Kick!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the cavern. His foot connected with the creature's vulnerable spot, the impact sending shockwaves through its body.
The Snake Worm let out a deafening screech, its coils loosening momentarily. Riku took advantage of this, leaping off its back and landing gracefully on the cavern floor. He didn't waste a second, immediately activating his Mana Surge ability.
"Mana Surge," the Gaio Driver announced, as Gaio felt his physical parameters boost by 30%. His speed and strength increased dramatically, allowing him to dodge the Snake Worm's retaliatory acid spray with ease.
Gaio darted around the creature, landing quick, mana-infused punches wherever he could. Each strike left a fiery imprint on the Snake Worm's scales, slowly wearing down its defenses. The beast's movements became more frantic, its attacks wilder and less coordinated.
Sensing the tide of battle turning in his favor, Gaio decided it was time to end this. He leaped back, creating some distance between himself and the Snake Worm. The creature, sensing an opportunity, lunged forward with its mouth agape, ready to swallow Gaio whole.
But this was exactly what Gaio had been waiting for. He channeled a massive amount of mana into his Vanguard form, causing his exoskeleton to glow with intense green energy. The mana swirled around him, creating a vortex of emerald light.
"Vortex Crash," the Gaio Driver announced, initiating the finisher protocol.
Gaio's armor segments opened slightly, absorbing ambient mana and amplifying his own. His eyes flashed brightly as power surged through his body. With a mighty leap, he soared high into the air, far higher than usual, leaving a trail of green energy behind him.
As he descended towards the oncoming Snake Worm, Gaio began to spin rapidly, forming a green, insect-like silhouette around him. The vortex of energy grew larger and more intense, concentrating around his outstretched foot.
Just before impact, the vortex took on a drill-like shape. Gaio's foot connected with the Snake Worm's open mouth, driving deep into its body. There was a moment of stillness, then an explosion of green energy that rippled through the air and ground.
...
Gaio stood before the massive corpse of the Venomous Snake Worm, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. The cavern, moments ago filled with the sounds of battle, now lay eerily silent. He deactivated his transformation, the Gaio Driver's power fading away.
"It's finally over," Riku sighed, his voice echoing in the vast space. He ran a hand through his sweat-soaked hair, wincing as he felt the bruises forming beneath his clothes. "That was... intense."
His eyes scanned the creature's remains, assessing the spoils of his hard-fought victory. The Snake Worm's scales glinted in the dim light, and its crystalline core pulsed with residual energy. He could see the Driver absorbing the Snake Worm's mana, but something else caught Riku's attention - a small, intricately carved object lay among the debris.
Riku carefully picked up the item, turning it over in his hands. It appeared to be some sort of necklace, with a large, luminescent stone shaped like a serpent's eye as its centerpiece.
"An artifact?" he mused aloud, his brow furrowing. "I've never seen anything like this before. I wonder what it does..."
He held the necklace up to the light, watching as it seemed to glow with an inner fire. "I'll need to get this appraised," Riku muttered to himself. "Maybe Hiroshi at the Twilight Bazaar would know something about it."
Turning his attention back to the Snake Worm's remains, Riku began the process of harvesting valuable parts. He carefully removed scales, collected venom sacs, and extracted the creature's mana crystal.
"These parts alone should fetch a good price," Riku said, a hint of excitement in his voice. "And that crystal... it's huge compared to the ones from the Earth Worms."
As he worked, Riku couldn't help but reflect on the battle. "I never thought I'd be able to take down something like this on my own," he admitted to the empty cavern. "This power... it's incredible. But also terrifying."
He paused, looking down at his hands. "What am I becoming? Earlier, with Kento and the others... I lost control. And now this. Am I still me?"
Shaking off the dark thoughts, Riku focused on the task at hand. He pulled out his storage ring, grateful for its capacity as he began storing the Snake Worm parts.
"At least I won't have to lug all this back manually," he chuckled, watching as the items disappeared into the ring's pocket dimension. "Small blessings, I suppose."
As he finished storing the last of the loot, including the mysterious artifact, Riku took one last look around the cavern. The battle had left its mark - gouges in the walls, acid burns on the floor, and the massive corpse of the Snake Worm serving as a testament to the struggle that had taken place.
"I should head back," Riku said, his voice tinged with exhaustion. "Aiko... I hope she's okay. And the others..." He trailed off, remembering the violence he had unleashed earlier. "I've got a lot to answer for."
...
Riku felt the ground tremble as the hollow started to collapse around him. The cavern walls shook violently, and chunks of rock rained down from above. He stumbled, trying to keep his balance as the world shifted and warped.
In a flash of light, Riku found himself out of the hollow. Blinking, his eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness. As his vision cleared, he saw Aiko and an unconscious Akane nearby.
Before he could take it all in, Aiko's eyes locked onto him. Relief washed over her face. "Riku!" she cried, her voice cracking with emotion.
Aiko hurried over and threw her arms around him in a tight embrace. Riku stiffened at first, then relaxed into her hold.
"I thought you were dead," Aiko whispered against his shoulder. She pulled back, eyes glistening with unshed tears as she looked him over. "When you disappeared, and then Shinji came back alone... I feared the worst."
Riku felt a pang of guilt at Shinji's name, remembering what had happened. He swallowed hard, unsure how to respond. "I'm okay, Aiko," he said, voice hoarse. "I'm just glad you're safe."
Aiko nodded, wiping at her eyes. "What happened in there, Riku? How did you survive?"
Riku's mind was working fast, trying to find a way to explain things to Aiko. He couldn't tell her the truth about the Gaio Driver or his transformation. Not yet.
"I... I was saved," Riku said, his voice uncertain. "There was this armored figure. Came out of nowhere when I was about to get eaten by those Earth Worms."
Aiko's eyes went wide at his words. "An armored figure?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Riku nodded, relieved she seemed to believe him. "Yeah, it was incredible. Moved faster than anything I've ever seen."
Aiko's grip on his arm tightened. Her face paled, and she took a shaky breath. "I... I saw it too," she said, her voice trembling.
Riku felt his heart skip a beat. He tried to keep his face neutral as Aiko went on.
"It was terrifying, Riku," Aiko said, her eyes distant as she recalled the encounter. "We got betrayed. Kento, Akane, and Shinji... they turned on me. I thought I was gonna die."
She paused, swallowing hard. "Then this... this thing appeared. Had these glowing red eyes. I ain't never seen anything move like that before. It took them all down easy."
Aiko shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself. "But the way it fought... it was so brutal. I was scared it might come after me next. I ain't never felt so helpless."
Riku felt a wave of guilt wash over him as he listened to Aiko's story. He'd lost control, let his anger take over. And now Aiko, the one he'd been trying to protect, was shaken up by his actions.
"I'm just glad you're safe," Riku said softly, unable to meet her eyes.
Aiko nodded, her gaze still far away. "Me too. But Riku... what was that thing? And why'd it save us?"
Riku's heart raced as he struggled to keep his composure. He couldn't bear to see Aiko so shaken, knowing he was the cause of her distress. "I... I don't know what that armored figure was," he lied, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm just glad it saved us both."
Aiko nodded, her gaze still distant. Riku hesitated for a moment before placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. She flinched at first, but then leaned into his touch, seeking solace in his presence.
"It's over now," Riku said softly, trying to sound reassuring. "We're safe."
Aiko took a deep breath, her shoulders relaxing slightly. "You're right," she murmured. "Thank you, Riku. For being here... for everything."
Riku felt a pang of guilt at her gratitude, knowing he didn't deserve it. He swallowed hard and changed the subject, gesturing towards the unconscious form of Akane nearby. "What should we do about her?"
Aiko's expression hardened as she looked at their former teammate. "We should report her to the Hollows & Hunters Bureau," she said firmly. "Let them handle the rest. They need to know about the betrayal and... and everything else that happened in there."
Riku nodded, relieved that Aiko had a plan. He didn't trust himself to make decisions right now, not with the weight of his actions still pressing down on him. "Okay," he agreed. "We'll let the HHB deal with it."
Riku trudged alongside Aiko as they entered the Hollows & Hunters Bureau. The harsh fluorescent lights overhead stung his eyes, a stark contrast to the dim caverns they'd just escaped. A heavy weight settled on his shoulders, the guilt of his actions pressing down on him as they approached the front desk.
With a steady voice that belied the turmoil within, Riku recounted their report. He watched, heart sinking, as Bureau officials led the still-unconscious Akane away. The sight of her limp form brought back flashes of his rampage in the cave, and he had to avert his gaze.
Once their statements were recorded and the paperwork filed, Riku and Aiko stepped out into the cool night air. The streets were eerily quiet, a jarring difference from the chaos they had just endured.
"I can walk you home," Riku offered, his voice soft with concern. He couldn't shake the need to protect her, even now.
Aiko shook her head, a weak smile on her face. "Thanks, but I'll be okay. I think... I think I need some time alone to process everything."
Riku nodded, understanding but reluctant to let her go. "If you're sure. Take care, Aiko."
He watched as she disappeared into the shadows, her figure fading from sight. Only then did Riku turn and begin the long trek back to his uncle's cafe.
As he walked, the events of the day replayed in his mind, a dizzying mix of betrayal, battle, and the moment he'd lost control. The Gaio Driver felt like a heavy weight against his waist, a constant reminder of the power he now possessed.
Power that had saved him and Aiko, but at what cost? He'd become the very thing that had terrified her, and the thought made his stomach churn.
Riku's steps slowed as he approached the familiar cafe, its lights dark and his uncle likely asleep. He paused outside, not quite ready to face the normalcy of his old life.
How could he reconcile the person he'd been that morning with the creature he'd become in that cave? The power coursing through him was exhilarating, but it also filled him with dread. He'd lost control so easily, driven by rage and a thirst for vengeance.
And yet, without that power, he and Aiko might not have survived. The thought of losing her made his chest tighten. He'd do anything to keep her safe, but did that justify the violence he'd unleashed?
Riku leaned against the cool brick of the cafe wall, closing his eyes. He had so many questions and no answers. What was he becoming? And more importantly, could he ever control it?
