Gaio ch 20

Riku returned from another successful F-rank hunt, his meager haul doing little to lift his spirits. A week had passed since the betrayal in the hollow, and the guilt and fear still weighed heavily on him.

Each time Riku entered a hollow, he couldn't help but compare his feeble abilities to the strength he had wielded as Gaio. The fiends posed little challenge, their attacks easily deflected, but the thrill and satisfaction he once felt were now tinged with a sense of unease.

As Riku entered the Serenity Brew Cafe, the familiar scents of freshly brewed coffee and pastries did little to soothe his troubled mind. His uncle, Kazuya, greeted him with a warm smile, unaware of the turmoil churning within his nephew.

"Another successful hunt, I see," Kazuya remarked, nodding towards Riku's haul. "You're really starting to make a name for yourself, you know."

Riku forced a smile, the praise only adding to his guilt. "It's nothing, really. Just doing what I can to get by."

Kazuya studied Riku's expression, his brow furrowing with concern. "You seem troubled, Riku. Is everything alright?"

Riku hesitated, unsure of how much he should reveal. "I... I'm fine, Uncle. Just a little tired, that's all."

Kazuya nodded, unconvinced, but didn't press the issue further. "Well, why don't you take the rest of the day off? You've more than earned it."

Riku opened his mouth to protest, but the look in his uncle's eyes told him it was a losing battle. "Alright, thanks," he conceded, turning to head upstairs to his room.

Once alone, Riku sank onto his bed, the Gaio Driver seeming to weigh heavier than ever. He stared at the innocuous-looking buckle, remembering the power it had granted him, the way it had transformed him into a force to be reckoned with. But the memory of Aiko's fear-filled eyes haunted him. He had become the very thing he had sworn to protect her from, a monster in a suit of armor. The thought made his stomach churn.

Riku sat on the edge of his bed, his head buried in his hands. The images of his brutal assault on Kento, Akane, and Shinji flashed through his mind every time he closed his eyes. The way their bodies had crumpled, the sounds of their pained cries - it was all seared into his memory.

A shiver ran down his spine as he recalled the intensity of his rage, the way it had consumed him until all he could see was red. He had become a monster, lashing out without mercy, without any concern for the lives he was destroying.

Gripping his hair tightly, the guilt and self-loathing threatened to overwhelm Riku. The power of the Driver had been a double-edged sword, granting him unimaginable strength but also stripping away his humanity. He had given in to the darkness, allowed it to consume him, and now he was terrified of what he might become.

Each time he closed his eyes, he saw their faces - Aiko's, filled with fear and betrayal; Kento's, twisted in pain; Akane's, begging for mercy. Riku had let them all down, had become the very thing he had sworn to protect them from.

Riku's chest tightened, his breathing growing ragged as the weight of his actions pressed down on him. He had to find a way to control this power, to keep it from turning him into a monster. But the thought of losing that strength, of being helpless once again, terrified him.

He thought back to the Venomous Snake Worm, the way he had fought and defeated it with such ferocity. The power had coursed through him, making him feel invincible. But at what cost? Was he willing to sacrifice his humanity, his very soul, to become stronger?

Riku shook his head, trying to clear the thoughts that threatened to consume him. He had to find a way to balance the power of the Gaio Driver with his own moral compass, to use it for good and not for destruction.

A knock at the door startled him, and Kazuya's voice called out with concern, "Riku? Are you alright, my boy?"

Riku took a deep breath, trying to compose himself before answering. "I'm... I'm fine, Uncle. Just need a little time to myself, that's all."

Kazuya's response was hesitant, but he didn't press the issue further. "Alright, well, you know where to find me if you need anything."

Riku listened as his uncle's footsteps retreated, leaving him alone once more. He knew he couldn't hide from this forever, that he would have to face the consequences of his actions. But the thought of losing everything, of betraying the trust of those he cared about, was a weight he wasn't sure he could bear.

With a heavy sigh, Riku closed his eyes again, steeling himself for the memories that would undoubtedly resurface. He had to find a way to confront his demons, to come to terms with the power he wielded and the responsibility that came with it. Only then could he hope to truly control the Gaio Driver and use it to protect those he loved.

...

Riku watched as the commotion downstairs reached his ears. Concern etched his features as he hurried down to investigate.

Approaching the counter, he saw two burly men facing off against his uncle, Kazuya. Their aggressive posture and demanding tones set Riku on edge.

"Look, we've made you a fair offer," one of the men growled. "This place would do better under new management."

Kazuya stood his ground, his usual kindness replaced by resolute determination. "I've already told you, this cafe is my livelihood. I have no intention of selling."

The other man leaned in, his eyes narrowed. "You don't seem to understand. This ain't a negotiation. You'll take the money and walk away, or things are gonna get ugly."

Riku felt his heart race as he watched the confrontation unfold. His uncle was in danger, and he knew he had to act. Steeling his nerves, Riku stepped forward, positioning himself between the thugs and Kazuya.

"I think you should leave," Riku said, his voice surprisingly steady. "This cafe ain't for sale."

The two men exchanged a glance, their expressions darkening. "Well, look who's decided to grow a backbone," the first thug sneered. "Maybe you can convince your uncle to take the deal."

Riku felt a surge of protectiveness wash over him, but he fought to keep it in check. "I won't ask you again. Get out of my uncle's place."

Riku watched as the two burly men exchanged one last menacing glance before turning and leaving the cafe. He let out a slow, steadying breath, relieved they had backed down, but deeply unsettled by the encounter.

Riku turned to his uncle, Kazuya, his brow creased with concern. "Who were those guys, Uncle? What did they want?"

Kazuya's expression was one of weary resignation. "They call themselves the Crimson Fang. They've been coming around, trying to strong-arm me into selling the cafe." He shook his head slowly.

Riku felt a chill run down his spine. The Crimson Fang - he'd never heard of them before, but the name alone conjured images of danger and violence. "And they're after the cafe? Why?"

His uncle shrugged helplessly. "I don't know, Riku. All I know is they've been making these demands, and I've refused to sell. I can't just give up the place your parents left me." Kazuya's eyes held a deep sadness, a reminder of the tragedy that had brought Riku to live with him.

Riku nodded slowly, his mind racing with the implications. If this Crimson Fang was as dangerous as they seemed, his uncle could be in real trouble. Riku couldn't bear the thought of losing another family member.

"I won't let them take this place, Uncle," Riku said, his voice firm with determination. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect the cafe and keep you safe."

Kazuya regarded his nephew with a mix of pride and concern. "Riku, I appreciate your willingness to help, but these men are not to be trifled with. I don't want you putting yourself in harm's way on my account."

Riku's jaw tightened. "I can't just stand by and do nothing. I've already lost too much." He reached out and placed a hand on his uncle's shoulder. "Please, let me help. I won't let anything happen to you."

Kazuya studied Riku's face for a long moment, weighing the decision. Finally, he sighed and nodded. "Alright, Riku. But promise me you'll be careful. I couldn't bear to lose you, too."

Riku felt a surge of determination. "I promise, Uncle. I won't let you down."

...

Riku's eyes scanned the empty cafe, the steady hum of the espresso machine the only sound breaking the eerie silence. Where once the place had bustled with chatter and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, now an unsettling quiet hung in the air.

Riku glanced over at his uncle, Kazuya, whose gaze was fixed on the window, a troubled expression etched on his face. Riku knew this cafe was their livelihood, and the dwindling number of customers threatened its very survival.

"Uncle, do you know what's causing the drop in business?" Riku asked, his brow furrowed with concern.

Kazuya let out a heavy sigh. "I've been hearing some troubling rumors, Riku. Apparently, there's talk around town that our cafe has fallen under the influence of the Crimson Fang."

A chill ran down Riku's spine at the mention of the notorious criminal organization. After their recent encounter, he had learned of the Crimson Fang's ruthless tactics and willingness to use violence to achieve their goals.

"The Crimson Fang? Them again?" Riku echoed, disbelief lacing his voice. "They are targeting the cafe?!"

Kazuya shook his head, his eyes filled with worry. "I'm not sure. All I know is that these rumors have been spreading, and it's driving our customers away. If we don't do something soon, I'm afraid the cafe won't be able to sustain itself."

Riku's jaw tightened with determination. This cafe, and the life he shared with his uncle, was the last connection he had to his family after his parents' tragic passing. He couldn't bear the thought of losing it.

"Uncle, let me handle this," Riku said, his voice steady and resolute. "I'll find a way to stop these rumors and bring the customers back. I won't let the Crimson Fang win."

Kazuya regarded his nephew with a mix of pride and concern. "Riku, I know you want to help, but these people are dangerous. I don't want you putting yourself at risk."

Riku placed a reassuring hand on his uncle's arm. "I understand your worry, but I can't just stand by and watch the cafe fail. This is our home, and I won't let anyone take that from us."

After a moment of hesitation, Kazuya nodded slowly. "Alright, Riku. I trust you. But please, be careful. I couldn't bear to lose you, too."

Riku felt a surge of determination. "I will, Uncle. I promise." He paused, his mind already racing with a plan. "Just leave it to me. I'll figure out a way to save the cafe and stop the Crimson Fang once and for all."

With renewed purpose, Riku set out to protect the only family he had left and the life they had built together. He would do whatever it took to ensure the Crimson Fang didn't succeed in their sinister plans.
