Becoming the Strongest as a Game Dev Ch 111

Ruby stood amidst the fallen robots, her breath coming in short gasps. The campus around her seemed to pulse with an underlying rhythm—even the pipes, floor tiles, and scattered machinery moved in subtle synchronization. She looked down at the guitar constructed from industrial debris, then turned her gaze toward Sam.

"What... just happened?" she asked, her voice a mixture of confusion and excitement.

Sam watched her with a knowing smile. "That's Chai's special ability," he explained. "He can see and feel the beat all around him. The music player embedded in his chest allows him to do this."

Ruby's eyes widened. She looked down at the music player on her chest, which continued to pulse with a steady, almost hypnotic beat. The environment around her still seemed to vibrate with an invisible rhythm—metal panels flexing imperceptibly, loose cables swaying in time, even the distant machinery humming in perfect musical alignment.

"You mean he can literally see the rhythm?" Ruby asked, her streamer's curiosity piqued.

Sam nodded. "Not just see it. Feel it. Interact with it. The beat becomes a way of perceiving the world—almost like an additional sense."

Ruby's eyes gleamed with excitement as Sam explained the rhythm mechanics. Her body still tingled from the recent battle, the industrial campus around her vibrating with an unseen musical pulse.

"So you're saying if I move with the beat, I become... stronger?" Ruby asked, her streamer instincts already calculating the potential gameplay mechanics.

Sam nodded. "Exactly. The more precisely you sync with the rhythm, the more powerful your attacks become. Your dodges will be faster, your strikes more precise. It's like the music transforms your entire combat experience."

He gestured toward the next corridor. "Why don't you try it out? See how the rhythm changes your movement and combat style."

Ruby took a deep breath and stepped forward, consciously trying to match her movements to the pulsing beat emanating from the music player on her chest. As she moved, she felt a strange synchronization—her steps became lighter, more fluid, and she could almost see invisible lines of energy connecting her movements to the environment around her.

"Go ahead," Sam encouraged. "Keep moving with the beat and see what happens."

Ruby moved through the Vandelay Technologies campus, her body instinctively syncing with the rhythmic pulse that seemed to breathe life into the environment. The walls, floors, and machinery pulsed and shifted in time with an unseen beat, transforming the industrial space into a living, musical landscape.

As she navigated the production line, her movements became a dance—each step precise, each dodge fluid. Suddenly, she spotted a group of Vandelay robots clustered around a robotic black cat with a striking red collar.

"Is this the defect? Looks suspicious," one of the robots said mechanically.

Another robot responded uncertainly, "Could be?"

Ruby's presence caught their attention. She stepped forward, her body still moving to the rhythm, and called out, "Hey! You looking for me?"

The robots immediately shifted into attack formation, their metallic bodies moving in sharp, angular motions. As they lunged toward Ruby, the robotic black cat darted away, disappearing into the rhythmic landscape of the production line.

Ruby spun her makeshift guitar, the robotic enemies falling in synchronized destruction around her. Metal parts clattered to the ground, perfectly timed with her rhythmic movements. She looked around the now-quiet production floor, her golden eyes scanning the environment.

"And... now what am I supposed to do?" she muttered, her streamer instincts kicking in as she considered her next move.

Suddenly, a voice echoed from another building, cutting through the industrial silence. "Hey! You alright? Thanks for helping my cat! Need a hand? I hacked the access panel, so come up here."

Ruby tilted her head, processing the unexpected invitation. Her chat would definitely want her to investigate, and she was curious about the mysterious voice and the robotic black cat that had disappeared earlier.

Ruby cautiously entered the construction site, her senses on high alert. The unfinished building echoed with the sounds of her footsteps, steel beams and exposed concrete walls creating a maze-like environment. Dust particles danced in the sparse light filtering through incomplete window frames.

"Hello?" she called out, her voice bouncing off the bare walls. No response came.

The space felt empty, and Ruby's streamer instincts began to tingle. Something about this scenario felt off. She took a few more steps, her golden eyes scanning the surroundings carefully.

"Good, you made it," a voice suddenly called out.

Ruby spun around, searching for the source. But the room remained empty.

"Down here," the voice said.

She looked down and found herself staring at the black robotic cat from earlier. The cat was looking up at her, its mechanical eyes reflecting an unexpected intelligence.

"Alright, so I'll keep this quick," the cat said matter-of-factly.

"Uhh..." Ruby responded, her usual witty commentary momentarily stunned by the talking robotic feline.

Ruby stared at the robotic cat, her usual bravado momentarily replaced by genuine confusion. The mechanical feline seemed to radiate an intelligence far beyond its small frame.

"I saw you fight back there," the cat continued, its voice crisp and matter-of-fact. "I think we might be able to help each other."

"Who are you?" Ruby asked. "Are you a cat?"

"No, this is 808," another voice interjected. "She IS a cat, but I built her."

Ruby's eyebrow raised. "Huh..."

"Anyway, security's all over you, which I could help you with," the voice explained.

Ruby couldn't resist a sarcastic comeback. "And how can you do that, you little pussy cat?"

She reached out with her robot arm, intending to playfully tap 808. The moment her metallic fingers made contact, something unexpected happened. A sudden connection sparked between Ruby and the robotic cat.

In an instant, 808 transformed, morphing from a stationary feline into a flying ball with distinctive cat ears. The mechanical creature began to follow Ruby, its movements synchronized with her own.

[TechnoGeek]: "What just happened?!"

[GamerGirl42]: "Whoa, that's so cool!"

Ruby stared at the transformed 808, her golden eyes wide with surprise. The robotic cat hovered near her, its mechanical ears twitching with an almost lifelike quality. Behind her, a voice of concern rang out, questioning the sudden change.

"808's not responding… What did you do?!" said the girl behind 808.

Ruby glanced back, then looked at Sam. "Sam, what just happened."

Sam's eyes narrowed as he analyzed the situation. "808 is not synchronized with Chai. 808 allows you to do more powerful attacks called Beat Hit. 808 also allows you to synchronize with the beat much easier," he explained.

The robotic cat continued to hover, its movements perfectly aligned with Ruby's own. Her chat erupted with excitement:

[TechnoGeek]: "That's insane!"

[GamerGirl42]: "What kind of upgrade is this?"

[RhythmRanger]: "Beat Hit sounds awesome!"

Ruby experimentally moved her arm, watching as 808 mirrored her motion. The mechanical creature seemed to pulse with an energy that matched the underlying rhythm of the Vandelay Technologies simulation.

Ruby turned to the girl behind 808, her golden eyes sparkling with mischievous excitement. "Cool, hey I'm gonna borrow your cat for a little bit," she announced confidently.

"What? Why?" the girl responded, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

"Hey, you wanted to help, right? And don't worry, I won't break her," Ruby replied with a reassuring grin.

The girl hesitated, then let out a frustrated sigh. "Ugh… you better not run off with her."

808 hovered between them, its mechanical ears twitching in sync with the underlying rhythm of the simulation. Ruby extended her hand, and the robotic cat seemed to lean towards her, its movements fluid and almost playful.
