2024 December Post 01 - Black Unicorn
Added 2024-12-07 00:01:26 +0000 UTCThere was no real plan for this one. It started as just a mood to draw something horsey, originally an alicorn. Then I decided it was better as a unicorn, and finally decided I wanted to paint her as a black unicorn because I remembered an old story. Couldn't come up with a background or foreground that worked for her - maybe it's fine to have her just standing there. If I get inspiration, I might go back and add stuff.
In the end this mostly served as practice for realistic shininess.

The story I remembered was probably part of a longer novel or series. It featured a group of people who found a painting or mural of a black unicorn in a tavern or cafe. This painting came to life as an actual black unicorn, which started stabbing people - every time it did so, it grew bigger. In the end they sadly put the unicorn back in the wall.
I haven't been able to find out what this is from, or what the title is.

Next step is doing fur texture on it. :) It's taking me a bunch of pictures to improve on it - and also being able to do it in the space of a day at most. (It's so time consuming, because I don't yet have a good feel for the color values and such.) I'm going to apply improved shiny and coloring on other critters too.

2024-12-07 01:41:14 +0000 UTCNice to see some equines from you again. Absolutely love the proportions you gave her. And I have to say your texturing is next to none. I don't know any other artists that gets so much details in the textures alone. The musculature, slight impurities, colour changes and whatnot you can see in just that is astonishing really. I thought it might be a bit too shiny in some places, mainly around her face, making it look a bit more like metal than fur, but apparently some horses just have ridiculously shiny fur. Anyway, fantastic work, really locing this one.
