On a fan forum someone once posted that in the future that would probably be Kaylees wedding dress when she marries Simon. I could envision it as Simon offering to buy her the best wedding dress and her saying that she's already got a fancy dress, why would she need another. And Simon going along with it even knowing it isn't a proper wedding dress, just because he knows it will make Kaylee happy.

But the whole point of doing it is to build something meaningul with a vaguely family-like structure. Bad combination when he gets worried about his mechanic getting sad about her place in things . . . Good combination when he finds a way include the dress in the activities . . .

The prevailing view is that the middle of the series (which she's about to get into, depending on whether or not you include Safe, as I do) is generally considered to be the strongest part.

Also, if you look on Kaylee's shelf when it's panning from the "radio" to the dress there is a figurine of Han Solo frozen in carbonite.
