He never actually said that he was on the island for all 5 years. The flashbacks are meant to answer questions that the audience might have had in the beginning of the series, like where did Oliver learn to speak Mandarin and Russian? He learned a little bit of Chinese from Yao Fei and Shado, but not enough to speak it as fluently as he does in present day. And he didn't spend enough time on Ivo's freighter to learn fluent Russian from Anatoli. He's also not quite the fighter or the killer on the island that he becomes by the beginning of season 1. This season also gives us insight to how Amanda Waller came to know about Oliver's evening activities. It's because she helped turn him into what he is now. Also, they haven't really used Oliver flashbacks as much this season. A lot of flashbacks we've seen throughout season 3 were from other characters like Floyd Lawton's PTSD or Felicity's time as a gothic cyber terrorist or Thea's 6 months of training with Malcolm.

I think one thing that makes the flashbacks so awkward where they have the direct reference/quote is that previously, the flashbacks were Oliver remembering things, and him tying his memory to a line he heard or said is ok, but if Oliver is remembering a line and then another character says it again, it seems misplaced.
That being said, they're also not that interesting, they're inconsistent with things said before (like that he was on the island for 5 years, but now he wasn't).
Also also, this season has some really bad acting, bad character takes, reverses of personality, etc. I watched up to some point in season 4 previously and this was rough, especially compared to how good season 1 and 2 were and how good The Flash S1 was.

using to pit isn't something they just do all the time for everybody and it has consequences especially in this version

I'm not sure anyone liked the flashbacks this season. I think season 1 and 2 made the connections between past and present less in your face. Besides that they were actually interesting. The flashbacks informed the story, and sometimes they mirrored each other, but they were never so on the nose as they are in season 3. The stuff in China is my least favorite of the whole series and I really think that's partially what makes people dislike this season. That's not to say this season doesn't have it's issues, because it does, but it also had some great things going on, like the arcs of Roy, Laurel, and Thea coming into their own. Also, I loved the Arsenal costume. And regarding Olicity, I like them together, and I do think there are hints of it in the first two seasons, but they are super subtle and most of them are only obvious on a rewatch after you've seen this season. That being said, I get where you're coming from. When I watched the season 3 premiere, it was jarring because it seemed like they were a couple already.

*Spoilers* Don’t read if you haven’t seen Season 4... okay. God she is having a real tough time this season and season 4 is gonna be 10x worse. I really hope she will be able to fight through and get to Season 5

The flashbacks were good when they were on the island. Now though, it seems overused and not interesting.

I believe I said it once or so before, but I'm really NOT a fan of the flashbacks. I get why they use them, but they are just too much and not all that entertaining to me. I feel like they had the flashbacks as a filler most of the time because they couldn't put enough into the episode.

I agree, i dont mind olicity but it seemed so forced. And i havent watched past seadon 3 yet but i hope the flash backs eventually get toned down.

I never got the impression that the flashbacks were to the day of the current happenings in each episode.
I think some flashbacks chronicle a few hours of an event while the main show takes place over several days, actually. Regardless though, I can see what you mean about it being a kind of heavy-handed. Although, I don’t think it’s weird that someone is recalling something from their past and it being relevant again.
