I believe the friend(who's name I can't recall)knew that Constantine would give him the choice of being the vessel,that he knew it'd be his only option bc he let out the demon, apparently messed up with Astrid & "drugged" Zed so by the time John gave him the choice he realized what he knew all along right!?😳🤫🤪
