It was never officially confirmed, but in season 2 Tripp went undercover as general Jones, and Tripp's mom had a framed picture on her wall with Captain America and the Howling Commandos from the first Captain America movie, in which Gabe Jones, the only black Howling Commando at the time, was in.

It was also a big deal within the show, to her coworkers that Peggy knew them. That's what started her getting a bit of respect among them.
