They couldn't send a message to their people cause it's too far to send a ship, it would take too long so I guess despite their advanced technologies, they don't have something resembling a hyperdrive. They also mentioned the new planet not having a gate, so they really didn't have another choice.

It was mentioned earlier in the show that their new home planet was too far away to send a ship.,.at least a ship that could get to them in their life time. So they may simply just assume it would be useless to send them a message!
