Stargate SG-1 S02E16 - A Matter Of Time FULL REACTION

Comments

it doesn't matter where the other end of the wormhole jump to unless that gate also has a black hole behind it. When they set the charge on Earth's end, the other end (currently connected to a blackhole) will jump away to another gate. At that time the wormhole will simply shutdown since they already pulled the plug. The blackhole gate will disengage. They are not screwing any other planet at all in this scenario.

I think this episode has one of the best openings in the show, especially if you know about black holes and all that it entails. Sergeant Siler is not only the stunt coordinator but he's also RDA's (Jack's actor) stunt double. Two new pieces of SG lore, the gates can only be opened for 38 minutes unless it's connected to a black hole. I think she picked up the donut because DONUT :D but then realized it wasn't glazed or with chocolate or whatever she likes in a donut so put it back lol Amanda Tapping actually learned the science behind her dialog and I think I read somewhere that she's even able to notice and correct some mistakes when learning her lines. She pushed really hard for the science in the show to be as accurate as possible. Do you think Jack got paid for those 2 weeks? Despite having worked for only 2 days? Remember in 2x03, Jack mentioned having been to prison before. We now learn the story behind it. It's cool, I think. When redirecting the wormhole, they didn't condemn the other planet at all. A wormhole is created between not just 2 gates but 2 destinations with a very specific address. When they overloaded the gate on Earth, one end of the wormhole jumped to an entirely new location with a different address. It would've then been impossible for the wormhole to stay open. So no, the other planet is safe. Besides, even if it wasn't the case, the chances for that planet to be inhabited are extremely small. There are thousands if not millions of planets with a gate and probably barely half of those are inhabited.

1. I've got a pretty good feeling that 2x15 is gonna have a bunch of comments... (I was right) ...I can say for myself that this is probably one of my most favourite episodes of the entire franchise 2. HA! You're totally right!! What IF that malfunction happened again and instead of the SGC gate someone gets sent to this newly welded shut 2nd gate!?!? INSTADEATH!!! I can't believe I never thought of this! Good one Froots! 3. Yeah yeah yeah.... I confess... One of my comments contained the mention of "Meaning Of Life Stuff" cause I knew it was gonna be further discussed here and I tried to covertly jog your memory a bit before going in... I mean.. Technically it got mentioned in 2x14 as well so I didn't just mention it for no reason 4. I believe I read somewhere that O'neill asking if his nose was bleeding after Teal'c hit him wasn't scripted.. That was actually Richard Dean Anderson worried there for a second as he actually got hit 5. And here we have definitive proof that the Goa'uld did not create the stargates... It was The Ancients ....Those frikkin snakes.. Taking credit for other peoples hard work.. Gross 6. I've got no clue as to what Base 8 math is... Like you... I am dum dum.. Fire bad.. Tree pretty 7. Yeah.. Many close-ups this episode.. You'd expect one shot would be so close you could count nose hairs.. But no.. They managed to not go TOO far with it ...added before posting... I definitely didn't add a close-up of you into the edit... No.. Definitely didn't do that ...innocent face... 8. Yeah that's the guy who had a crush on Carter.. Turns out he's doing alright.. Still single though ...But being single isn't a bad thing ...sniffle... 9. O'neill meant he didn't remember any of the tech and language he had in his mind... He obviously remembers meeting The Asgard as he tells Daniel they're gonna be alright... He wouldn't have said this if he didn't at least remember the conversation he had after the Ancient knowledge was extracted ...Also... The Asgard are my favourite aliens on stargate.. Just saying 10. The planet with the black hole COULD be a new gate that O'neill put into the dialing computer on 2x15... But that's not really stated.. So it's anyone's guess ...added now... Ok you apparently picked up on something I didn't.. You were right.. This was one of the new gates.. Nice job Detective 11. I mean... Dude has a point... They haven't heard from the SGC in some time and so they're sent down to check up on them.. Ofcourse they'll point guns at the people inside out of fear that they might have been possessed by some alien force 12. Going back down to the SGC wouldn't actually give Carter more time.. It'd give her less time... While she's up there she could potentially spend the next couple of days trying to come up with a solution.. THEN go down.. And only a couple of minutes will have gone by for O'neill 13. The guy that came down with Carter is Sergeant Siler.. O'neill and some others have mentioned him a couple of times and he's been in several episodes now... He's the lead technician and engineer at the SGC.. He's also played by a stunt man.. Soooo getting hit by a "blast of electricity" earlier in the episode.. Just another wednesday for Siler 14. I don't think the air would be hard to breathe closer to the gate.. The black hole would probably be sucking in the air a bit maybe... But Earth has plenty of air to go around so I don't think breathing would be a problem for quite a while 15. Nah Froots... SG-10 most decidedly didn't make it off the planet with the black hole.. The black hole prevented them from dialing out and they stated several times that they were a lost cause

Tony

FYI the process in which something is stretched as it falls into a black hole is called "Spaghettification".

Alexis

So Jack worked almost 336 hours straight and that in just one day.

Stefan suchy

ya...when the wormhole jumped from one gate to another...what happened was that the connection to the black hole planet was disconnected and that end jumped to a new stargate while maintaining the connection to the earth Stargate. It was not the earth stargate connection that jumped...so no other world was hurt :)

I just may have missed it in previous episodes but was this the first time they had zat gun holsters on their uniforms?

Amanda Logsdon

To be fair to the writers (or not, depending on your point of view), it isn't the worst example of 'wrong science' in Stargate. That episode is still far away, but it grates on me. Too much knowledge can be a bad thing for enjoying science fiction.

ThatGuy11200

Although the science is inaccurate, once they set up the nature of the problem they stayed with it throughout the episode.

Colin 3of5

In fairness to Stargate, they do their best with science, but they are working with whatever the prevailing theory was in the 90's, we have 25 years of research past then. As well, Carter mentions that the time dilation and gravity weren't acting in a way that made sense based on what they knew, implying that there was something else unknown to us affecting things. That could just be a cop out excuse by the writers, but it works for me.

Adam Knapp

It's ok, I think you miss-heard them, by detonating the bomb it caused the destination of the wormhole to shift, they didn't doom another planet. The gate was cut to the black hole planet and opened to the closest one

Adam Knapp

I think you might like Dr Becky, She is an astrophysicist at Oxford who makes science videos. Occasionally she gets asked to react to programs, and she was asked to react to this episode of SG1. https://youtu.be/jA-DBKQsHp0 The link takes you to the reaction

Colin 3of5

I like science, so I like pointing out wrong science. TV sci-fi writer: "It's a black hole. It must slow down time when it forms, right?" Wrong! The only place that would experience time dilation would be within the volume of the neutron star that collapsed to form the black hole. Planets orbiting that neutron star/black hole wouldn't experience time dilation because there is no increase in mass. If anything, time would move slightly faster on the planet, because some of the mass of the hydrogen that the neutron star was taking from the other star would have been lost as it gets converted to photons (gamma rays) and neutrinos (tiny particles that mostly pass through other matter), in a run-away nuclear reaction as it gets denser during the collapse of the star. Apart from that, the team definitely wouldn't have survived to dial home after the formation of the black hole, which would probably have resulted in another supernova or, at least, a massive release of radiation. I do like the premise of the episode though.
