Lana Parilla (Regina) directed this episode now onto to trivia i noticed in these two eps Nick's apartment number is 1812, which is the year that the Brothers Grimm published the first edition of the "Hansel and Gretel" fairytale. Before being interrupted by Sabine, the pancakes that Jacinda is making are a hidden Mickey Mouse. Roni says to Kelly, "Go on, you monkey. You get on that bike and fly.", a reference to the Winged Monkeys from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When Zelena confronts the witch for the second time in the episode, she says, "I am tired of playing candy crush with you." This appears to be a play on words by the writers in reference to the Facebook game Candy Crush, in addition to the phrase being used by Zelena in the episode as a literal emphasis on the witch's penchant for baking sweets and using candy-based magic. The name "Baron Samdi" is a reference to Baron Samedi/Samdi, a loa (pronounced low-a) – or spirit – of Haitian Vodou. Samdi's original counterpart, Dr. Facilier, is the adaptation of Baron Samedi/Samdi in the Disney film The Princess and the Frog. Before Dr. Facilier appeared in Season Seven, a voodoo mask similar to Facilier's transformation talisman from The Princess and the Frog was going to appear in the Season Six episode "The Other Shoe". The mask was created for the episode, but did not make it onto the screen. Just like fellow coven members Eloise Gardener, Ivy Belfrey, and Doctor Sage, Hilda BraeburnBlind Witch's name comes from plants: "Braeburn" is a type of apple. It is also a reference to the character's first iteration, who stole the poisoned apple from the Evil Queen and was killed because of that. The bookstore that Tilly and Margot visit is called Dodgson's Books, a reference to Lewis Carroll's real name, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. During the scene where Rumplestiltskin and Hook put aside their differences, Rose Reynolds (Alice) and Tiera Skovbye (Robin). who were still in the background of the shot, were given a tea-spread and biscuits. According to Rose, she was constantly trying to feed Tiera biscuits. The skulls and orange flowers in the Cave of the Departed are a reference to the sugar skulls and orange marigold flowers from Coco. The masks in the room are also similar to the ones worn by Dr. Facilier's friends on the other side in The Princess and the Frog. Alice has a tea set in her cottage, and two teacups are decorating Alice's mantelpiece. This is a reference to the Hatter's tea party from the novel. Alice has a white rabbit plushie in her home, which she refers to as Mr. Rabbit; a reference to the White Rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. A chess set is sitting on the table in Alice's cottage and a basket of yarn sits on the floor. Chess is an important theme in the story's sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and the yarn is a reference to the ball of worsted that Alice is trying to wind up while her kittens are playing in the sequel's opening scene. Alice gives Robin a pocket watch from New Wonderland, a reference to the White Rabbit's pocket watch from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The framed photograph of Belle which Mr. Gold conjures is taken from a behind the scenes photograph of Emilie de Ravin from the filming of the Season Six episode "Changelings". The chief medical examiner mentioned on Nick's medical examiner report is S. Laflamme, a reference to production staff member Sierra Laflamme. The director of public health is S. Thompson, a reference to art department coordinator Sharon Thompson. When Rogers searches Nick's apartment, a letter from an "N. Westlake" is lying in a cupboard; a reference to graphic designer Neil Westlake. While visiting the bookstore, Margot takes out the travel books The Traveler's Key to Ancient Egypt: A Guide to Sacred Places by John Anthony West, Insight Guides Bali & Lombok, Fodor's Big Island of Hawaii, The Rough Guide to India, Journey to Machu Picchu: Spiritual Wisdom from the Andes, and Trekking in the Himalaya by Hashmat Singh and Pallas Das. The name Rumplestiltskin is misspelled "Rumpelstiltskin" on the Dark One Dagger

Actually, the original fable is Jack the Giant Killer. There was a film adaptation in 1962, called Jack the Giant Killer. In 2013, another adaptation was done, it was originally also called Jack the Giant Killer but was later renamed Jack the Giant Slayer. The name change was intended to make the movie more “family friendly.” In doing so, the studio seemed to assume the word “slayer” was more family friendly than “killer.”

It annoyed me too, how Hansel & Gretel's father was so judgmental over Zelina. He was also being hypocritical. He even told her how he didn't pay much attention to his children until he lost his eyesight. So he's not so perfect either. Zelina was trying to not be wicked and he couldn't see it (haha). But it's a trope when they are telling a redemption arc storyline. When you start doing good acts, no one wants to believe you and they just see you as the person that wronged them. I could see not forgiving her if the witch had killed them, but he got them back, which should have been the most important thing. It's so annoying when people see only black and white, good and evil, right and wrong. People are complicated and don't always take the straight path.

She probably missed it in the opening credits but yeah, I caught it too. It's hard to tell a lot of times though. It's not like the episodes are so stylistically different from each other.

I don’t know if someone mentioned it, but this episode was directed by our very own Lana Parilla! In honor of the 150th episode of Once Upon a Time :)
