Ally McBeal S02E01 - The Real World FULL REACTION

In my country she wouldn't be on trial. Parents can only sue someone below the age of 16 if they are over the age of 18. 16-18 years old can only be done by the teenagers themselves. So, as icky as we perceive it these days, in my country what she did wouldn't be considered a crime, just several judged. It's is very odd though, my cousin was 16-17 when she dated a 32 year, and her parents were very unhappy with it, but they had no say in it legally.

I finally had some money to spend, so I'm back and catching up on Ally McBeal first. Let's get into this new season!

There are/were some states that had an age of consent of 16, unless the older person was in a position of authority like a teacher or boss, then it would be 18. I think they've changed but I think I recall seeing like 20 years ago there were still a couple states (wanna say Hawai'i and Pennsylvania) that had 14 as an AOC.

I'm pretty sure they were just going with the fact that in most states, it is above 16. This was before the internet was everywhere and in every electronic device, so at that time they got away with people being ignorant of what the actual legal age in Massachusetts was. Still though, whether he was able to consent or not, it's pretty creepy. Usually, age of consent is generally accepted for someone that's under 18 dating someone not too far from their age. This kind of an age gap for a minor is...yeesh.

I don't know if it was an error by the writers, but the age of consent in Boston is 16. So tech (not morally), it wasn't illegal.

And so the future Mrs. Ellen DeGeneres joins the show. Initially, none of her fellow castmates knew about Portia's sexual orientation, but apparently Greg Germann has highly tuned gay-dar. From her 2005 interview in The Advocate: I’d been on the show for about two months before we had to go to New York to do press, and Greg Germann (who played the head of the law firm on the series) and I were talking in the bar one night and he said, “There’s something about you I can’t quite put my finger on….Are you gay?” Of course I stammered and stuttered and looked at the ground and went, “Uh…uh…uh…maybe, I don’t know, I think so, I’m not sure.” And he looked at me and said, “Have you struggled with it?” And to me, that was so profound, because I thought, Yeah. [Dabs at her eyes]

This has already been reflected in real life and a very public relationship between Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchison when she was 16 and he was 50 and they actually got married when she was still only 16. Ohh and her parents thoughts on the relationship ohhh she is old enough to make her own decision. Parents of the year there.

Andrew Polinski

Yeah, I agree it's just icky and thinking about the implications if we were talking about a 16 year old girl and a 39 year old man, it puts it into perspective. It shouldn't be that way but to me, it's the same.
