Don't quote me on this, but I think the concept of gift registry started in a time when most people still waited until they were married to move in together. So the typical wedding gift was usually something a couple might need in their new home, typically, small kitchen appliances. By registering a list of gifts at your favorite department store, you give your guests a list of things that you want or need. And by purchasing off that list, you eliminate the probability of receiving 5 toasters and 6 blenders.
