I actually think the mystery of what causes the loop is one of the great things about the movie. The point wasn't about that. It was about why Phil was the one caught in the loop. He was a jerk. insensitive, miserable, a bit misogynist and generally not very nice to other people. Along the way, he learned how to change and become better, not just to win the affection of Rita (BTW, that wasn't Elaine from Seinfeld) but to be more someone that others could look up to. Being that this concept is explored in other shows like sci-fi, comic and superheroes, it probably got you used to the idea of finding out the cause and seeing a more condensed version, which is understandable. But this is a rom com movie, so it didn't really have much of an interest in detailing the why and the how. It was more about the main character's journey. I get that this doesn't connect for you as much as those others that you have seen with this idea. But at least now you get what was so influential about this movie.
