It’s an info dump on certain characters comic inspirations/motivations. So Sophie Moore is a comic character however she is pretty minor. Kate and her were girlfriends at West Point military academy (Point Rock in the show) and Kate ended up discharged after being suspected of being queer. She was given the choice to deny it and lead the investigation to Sophie or tell the truth and protect Sophie. Kate choice to tell the truth. Sophie later got engaged to a woman after Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy was revoked. She’s very minor. TV Sophie takes elements from Kate’s two major love interests, the homophobic parent storyline is taken from Kate’s ex girlfriend Renee Montoya (who later became the second Question). Renee was not used in the show because the Birds of Prey movie had called dibs on the character. Sophie having a husband and being deeply closeted in taken from comic book Maggie Sawyer’s backstory. Comics Maggie had been married to a man and they had a daughter Jamie Sawyer. When Maggie came out her husband got custody and they divorced. Losing custody tore her up pretty badly. She and Kate later got engaged and would have married except DC editorial said “no” and the writers quit in protest. So TV Sophie is a hodgepodge of people. Safiyah Sohail (Sah-fie-yah Soh-hale) is a Batwoman villain. She runs a group called the Many Arms of Death (think knockoff League of Assassins). Safiyah and Kate are exes in the comics. And Safiyah turned out to not be a villain in the comics. She was framed or something. It’s been a minute since I read that story. Mary Hamilton as a character does not exist in the comics, her closest inspiration is Bette Kane (a cousin of Kate and Bruce’s). I deeply adore Bette but I am not sure how the tv show got Mary from Bette. They are wildly different characters. Bette’s an athlete, never takes no for an answer, and is a little bitchy. Bette started out as the very first Batgirl (debuting in 1961) before getting replaced by Barbara Gordon in 1967. Bette later bounced back as Flamebird and joined the Teen Titans. In the past decade though she’s been treated abysmally by the Batwoman comic writers and it’s making me so mad.

2022-04-23 21:43:34 +0000 UTCI think Ryan's situation with Alice is comparable to Sara's situation with Damien Darhk. Ryan wants Alice to be arrested for being (somewhat) responsible for the death of her adoptive mother while Sara wanted Damien dead for killing Laurel. Sara grew to accept that she couldn't kill Damien from the past since it would have big effects to the timeline, but she did occasionally work with him (reluctantly). Time will tell if Ryan ever learns to work with Alice to save Kate or if it will be a persistent issue throughout the show.
