The show is based on a book trilogy. This episode is slow as it is basically a bunch of exposition and introductions of the main characters. Some basic character info based on what you've seen: Alina and Mal are the two friends. They are part of the Ravka first army. The magic users are called Grisha. On the other side of The Fold you met a group known as The Crows. They are made up of Kaz Brekker (guy with the cane), Jesper (sharpshooter), and Inej.
