Batwoman S02E14 - And Justice For All FULL REACTION

Comments

I really think telling this story is important. Living in the United States, whenever I hear news about a black person being killed by a cop, my first reaction isn't shock or disbelief. I think "again?" or "is this one I've heard about or a different one" and that is really awful. It really sucks that if this story happened in real life, I wouldn't be surprised. I think by having this in the media, it helps remind people that something as awful as this happens in real life and it's a problem that needs to be taken care of.

I didn't watch the show when it aired so I don't know what was happening in the world at the time. But it just felt like they were going down the same road as BL with their overall view on cops. I know that there were white cops that weren't corrupt but the squad that was sent to take out the zombified people were white and the main bad cop guy that shot Luke was white. Then of course they did the whole "he has a gun" scenario, which is common in that situation. I'm not saying that the issue isn't an important one in the real world and I am a big advocate against racism and corruption. But I don't need to be reminded of it when I watch a superhero show. One of the biggest complaints that people have about the Arrowverse in general is that they won't get off their soapbox. This episode was yet another example.

This entire season has been about Ryan's distrust of cops, and Sophie trying to make her imprint on the system as a black cop. This episode wasn't done because of a trope. It was literally the main story line of the season. That and corrupt cops is a main theme in every Gotham related show / comic / etc. There were always going to be corrupt cops. You also didn't honestly expect a show with corrupt cops in it to avoid the biggest story in the world at this time, did you? A story that NEEDS to be repeated until things change. Sidenote: There were plenty of good white people shown in this episode. Good white cops. A white drug addict that was doing everything in his power not to hurt people. White victims killed by the corrupt cop.

I really enjoyed this episode. When I first watched it in 2021, I believe the ending brought me to tears. I do watch shows as a way to escape from the world's problems (as a black person in America), but sometimes episodes like this are needed in my opinion. I don't think the writers are saying white cops are bad. They are writing about the experiences a black person may have in America. I'm not trying to sound argumentative or shut anyone down. I'm just not a fan of saying episodes like this are playing into a trope or done for shock value when these are real life, traumatic experiences black people face in America. This season was also the season after the BLM protests in 2020. It makes sense why a show with a black superhero would want to address it. They live in Gotham and the GCPD has corrupt officers in probably every continuity. In my opinion, it's not farfetched to create a story from that setting about racism and biases. Again, I'm not trying to argue or put down, just offering another perspective. I'll even admit I originally watched this at the same time as The Falcon and Winter Soldier and both shows tackling racism became a bit much for me, but I had to remind myself of the importance of covering it. Sorry for the long comment and if my point isn't clear.

So they are basically adopting the same trope that BL did, where white cops = bad. That's not just lazy writing, it's derivative of your own source material, since it's in he same universe. Then they took it a step further by shooting Luke? Like ok, I'm sure he's not dead (I don't know for sure but come on) but that was clearly done for shock value and doesn't add anything to the overall story.

Brandon Wiesner

I remember hating the cops in the episode especially tavaroff's Sophie said no lethal Force what the hell these zombies are is innocent civilians and you're shooting them like their freaking criminals what the hell is wrong with you I feel so bad for luke everything was going so well and now this happened why do this to my favorite characters Mary Luke I wish something Good can happen to them but no like the writers had to hurt me Overall a episode that pissed me off and hurt my favorite characters
