A Kiwi is a nickname for someone from New Zealand. The kiwi bird is the national symbol for NZ and was on military insignia worn in WWI. Because of the insignias it became a nickname used by soldiers from other countries. Ever since then the nickname has been one the NZ people are proud to be associated with. A majority of NZ residents call themselves either Kiwis or En Zedders.

The reason they had them in hotels / motels is because it was often people on long road trips that stayed in those places. If I had to guess, they probably had vibrating beds in other hotels for other uhmmm reasons.
