The whole football thing felt really out of place in the episode. It felt too ridiculous to me to have some of the top members of the government treating the nuclear launch briefcase like a game. Also, the general and the people helping him keep the briefcase from the president would most certainly be charged with treason. One of the important takeaways from the Cuban Missile Crisis is that it's the closest the world has ever been to nuclear war. For this show it's just one of those situations that is very delicate and any change to the timeline has a high chance of ending in catastrophe.
