It came out some time ago so my memory isn't great but I think most people at least suspected he was the dog once he ran into the bar and a dog bolted out. But I think that was intended since obviously it got confirmed minutes later. Also, as far as I know the extreme gore upon a vampire dying is accurate to the book. It could very well be an HBO thing lol
