I agree that this version of Vanya is definitely tailored to Ellen/Elliott Page actor. Vanya is nothing like this in the comics. I disagree though that this has not been a natural transition for Vanya since season 1. When the show started, Vanya was very isolated and alone. She dressed very masculine with no hair product or makeup she honestly dressed like she didn't know who she was. Her getting into the relationship with Peabody was gross. They had zero chemistry and he was just taking advantage of a vulnerable Vanya. In season 2 after she lost her memory and didn't remember the trauma she had been through she finally started become herself and formed a relationship with Sissy. In my opinion their relationship had a lot more chemistry and felt a lot more natural. Most transgenders come out as gay or lesbian before they come out as transgender. They're still attracted to the same sex after the transition. Personally, I'm weird. I really like reboots and remakes, I don't mind race bending i love to see different versions of stories. In the comics of Vanya was a supervillain called The white violinist. I've only dabbled in the comic but from what I've read she's pretty evil. I don't know if anybody else could have pulled off this character the way Elliot Page has. Yeah he's definitely done some evil things but you feel for him and you're still rooting for him. Or at least I am LOL.

In my opinion there could only have been 2 possibilities.
1. He continues to play a woman.
2. The role needs to be recast.
Both options are unfortunately not possible in 2022, I think.

It was written into the show because the producers wanted to make Elliot feel more comfortable with the role he was playing.
Personally I don't think it was the right move. I have all the respect for people wanting to be who they are, but when you change a pre-established character because of a real world change made by the actor portraying said character, you're crossing a line.
As an actor you play the role you're given. There have been plenty of actors/actresses who have played a role of the opposite gender. Nowhere in the comics (as far as I'm aware) nor in the previous seasons was it made clear that Vanya/Victor felt uncomfortable as a female. Anyone coming up with theories on how I'm wrong and that she might have felt like this anyway, is just making up things to explain away this change in season 3.
I would have been absolutely on board with this on-screen change if it had been part of the story from the beginning or if it at least would have been a story that was part of season 2, as to see people of all backgrounds be represented is something that should be normalized, because everyone deserves to be who they are. But since there was no indication before now other than people trying to make up reasons for it, the character transition was too sudden and came across as pandering to the actor to me.
This, plus the fact I wasn't really feeling the show anymore anyway made me stop watching. I hope anyone reading this doesn't hate me for saying all this and can respect where I come from as I would do the same for them.

I have to admit I never even saw an episode of Umbrella Academy. I can't say anything about whether the gender change fits or not. However, during the filming of Season 2, they couldn't know. Season 2 came out on July 31, 2020. It was filmed over a year ago. On June 9, 2019. Page's gender change was on December 1, 2020.
Maybe it fits perfectly, but it can't really have been planned.

Yeah. It’s really hard to figure out who you are as a person when you’re being abused or just struggling to survive. Any bad feelings you have about yourself, your body, or the way society treats you can just be excused away by trauma. It’s not until you’re in a better situation that you have the energy to start figuring things out. Plus, Victor was locked up as a kid, so he might not have known what dysphoria was or that transgender people existed. Personally, had I written this, I would have had Vanya stay with Cissy to help raise Harlem, but given that this is a tv show and not a book, I think having Elliot’s character transition was a very respectful decision. I also like that they managed to use Cissy’s coming out story with the being boxed in analogy as a way for Victor to realize he was struggling with something similar. It’s not as huge of a change in character as it first appears. Some trans people will desperately embrace their assigned gender roles, as when Victor wore makeup in season 1 for the date with that guy. Many trans people will also come out as gay before coming out as trans, so going from season 2 to season 3 does make sense… even if I didn’t like it from a plot perspective. It’s also sad that Victor won’t be playing the violin, since Elliot’s stunt double was a woman. They’d have to find someone new.

I think Viktor’s transition makes sense within the show. Viktor since he was a kid was locked up, drugged up, and gaslighted into thinking he was inferior to everyone which stunted their emotions and most likely their development as a person.
Throughout season 2 and into season 3 he is exploring himself and finding out who he is, something he never has the ability to do before. Sissy finally gave him a healthy relationship that allowed him to grow as a person into who he is now.
