Roswell S02E21 - The Departure FULL REACTION

Comments

1. Yup further proof that I probably only saw Season 1 in it's entirety and then I kinda watched an episode of Season 2 and 3 here and there ....HAD. I known 2x20 was supposedly put in the wrong order due to a school shooting or whatever ...I WOULD. have put it in the correct place ...Whoops ...At least you'll be able to warn others in case they start the show 2. Yup... You tried Froots... You tried ...But you're right... Last week... After you and I both watched the episode your whole "Memory disk full" argument sounded a LOT. smarter ...But hey you gave it your best shot to repeat it ....Basically the show treated the simulation's error like it was a disk drive fault when it should have probably been a memory fault ....They confused harddrives with memory ...2 completely different pieces of hardware ....One COULD. argue though that while Brody was going through his simulation.. His computer was writing the necessary code onto his harddrive to simulate what he wanted and THAT. was ultimately why he ran out of harddrive space ...BUT!!! (chickenbutt?)... They SHOULD. NOT. have said "Memory disk full" (The fuck is a "Memory disk"!?) ...It should have been "Harddrive space full" ....That part did not make sense given the context 3. No no no no.... When Tess first tried to mindfuck Brody... He had NOT. yet used the D&D dice device to dampen their powers ....Brody was impervious to mindfuck powers WITHOUT the help of that device .....That truly was some J'onn J'onzz type of shit 4. You.. Holding up a gas lighter: "You see this?? This is gas.. And this is me lighting the gas" ....Who the hell gave you arms-reach access to a gaslighter!?! Someone figured.. Y'know what? ..This girl is clumsy when it comes to knives... Let's give her access to fire and see what happens .....Careful dum dum ....YEAH! Don't set your hair on fire... It's lookin' good! 5. HA! Yeah your bit of Liz wearing a camera was hilarious ...Imagine if she was deadass wearing a fucking phone on her chest like that ....And then imagine Brody NOT. seeing that shit ...Good one Froots 6. Ok.. Now Maria AND Michael are both doing the fourth wall break ...How cute? ....And yeah I saw eyes... Sure.. I definitely didn't see boobs.. Not me .......But also... Did you notice how the circles that Maria drew on the board behind her changed position during the shots? ...I did... During editing ...While I was definitely not pointing out "eyes" and/or "boobs" 7. It IS ...Or rather WAS a thing they used to say yeah ....If a guy wears an earring on his right ear then it means he's gay ....It was a statement by gay men living in a world where they couldn't be who they were to indicate their sexual preference .....Today's world we don't really care about that kinda shit anymore ...BUT... It's still used as a joke of some sorts among guys and it's probably only offensive if you're weak minded and or insecure about yourself ....If you're secure about yourself then gay puns will just be laughed about and shrugged off and NOT. seen as insulting 8. Liz to Max: "I never blamed you.." .....Yeaaaah naaaahh... You most decidedly blamed him ...This little shit... Trynna act innocent ..We got proof bish! 9. Aight... This isn't creepy at all ....Teenage guy crawling through some big vents being able to look into some girl's dorm room ...Noooothing wrong with that 10. Ok I haven't even finished the episode but Michael telling Maria that he never let her see him cause there were things about him he didn't want anyone to see ...That hit home ...That was definitely (probably) the best part of the episode 11. Aaaaand turns out Tess's been mindfucking people for some reason... Apparently she knows more about Alex's death than she's leading on ...She's got some 'splaining to doooo 12. Finally the truth comes out that Liz didn't sleep with Kyle ....But yeah... Guys... You are BOTH. in relationships ...Or at the very least dating someone else ....Yet here Liz and Max are ...Kissing eachother... Fucking cheaters 13. Aight... Liz is just going around kissing all the guys now ....Liz... You's nasty 14. Ooookeeeey... Looks like Max is gonna need a new car in Season 3 ...Cause we both know daaaaaamn well he ain't leaving Liz behind and Über hasn't been invented yet 15. Ok.. Pause.. Since the only thing that I remember from this episode is Tess getting in the Granolyth to go home ...I'm gonna figure this shit out real quick before I hit play ....Why did Tess mindfuck everyone?? ....I think the answer is pretty simple ....To get Max for herself and to go home ...Aaaaand play 16. Yeah nah ofcourse Michael doesn't wanna leave ...Maria is his home ...These two.. Couple goals! 17. TRUE. ...Tess tricked Max into getting her preggers .....All so he would choose HER. ...That's pretty fucking disgusting 18. I'm not sure if it's a betrayal of her character though... She's always been pretty obsessed with Max and with the whole destiny thing and going home ....This to me seemed more like a culmination of all of that ...BUT... I DO. think that IF. Alex didn't have to be written off the show... This probably would NOT. have happened and I feel like perhaps Tess would've perhaps ended up with Kyle 19. Isabel: "What happens now Max?" ...Max: "I have to save my son" ......And how... IN. the FUCK... Are you gonna do that Max?? ...Are we gonna go to Smallville and ask a certain farmboy if he can lend you his spaceship??? It should still be there by the time this episode airs

This episode was written as a possible series finale even though they were not canceled canceled. Based on Google it looks like it was only days prior to this episode airing is when they officially signed to move to UPN along with Buffy (they announced the move a month before them). Depending on who you ask, actors were under the impression they were canceled and were out looking for work. So what matters for me in the real world timeline is when exactly did Colin notify the bosses he wanted to leave (which they allowed per DVD commentary) so that the writers could shift whatever plots they had outlined for everyone at THAT point in time to write this jumbled mishmash that we actually got if they actually were just writing 3 to 4 episode blocks to satisfy WB's meddling that seemingly get immediately forgotten by the next block of episodes (see Skins, Dupes, Laurie) as opposed to an overarching season story. Now that you've seen this finale you can see why I disliked that run of episodes 6 to 14 (minus Christmas). I never had an issue with making Tess the ultimate Big Bad, it's just that as you also mentioned they destroyed all sympathy garnered for Tess throughout the season completely out of left field. No subtelties, no signs of a turn, just straight to Tess murdered Alex. But moreso, it's about how much disbelief you have to suspend to buy that Tess did it. Based on what was shown, Tess had to do all of the following, alone mind you, to get Alex to "go to Sweden" and maintain the lie: 1) mindwarp Alex for approximately 1 month to "go to Sweden" 2) mindwarp people at Roswell High to forge documents so that it would appear that he went to Sweden 3) mindwarp people at University of Las Cruces to forge documents so that he could stay on campus to decode the book 4) even if Tess was knowledgable in Sweden for whatever reason, photoshop dozens of pictures of Alex/Leanna to forge the memories 5) maintain the mindwarp from approximately 185 miles away but stop the mindwarp occasionally enough so that zombie Alex would email Maria (presumably also to communicate with his family). She was only shown to be able to maintain mindwarps from nearby for a few minutes at a time in episode 2 and 7 which would then wipe her out. 6) leave fake breadcrumbs that Liz followed to piece together his alleged itinerary / send flowers to Alex's family from a fake Swedish family 7) mindwarp Amy for months to forget about being held hostage by Brody 8) mindwarp Kyle to forget carrying Alex's body 9) after Alex is loaded into his car, drive him to the highway, stage the accident, get back somehow on foot to the Crashdown undisheveled in order to receive the news that Alex died from Valenti all while acting happy and giddy looking at Prom pictures while waiting for Valenti Basically they made Tess a deus ex machina to be able to do all of the above while living her "normal" life including the Dupes, Christmas, crystals, Vegas and Prom episodes for the approximately 4 months. ALL of this, alone. They easily could have had Kivar himself, Nicholas, the Dupes or any new character introduced to help her somehow to take a load off her plate. My personal choice would be the Skins and Kivar are the season long Big Bad, you can kill Nasedo off later in the season and then if you wanted to tie Tess in at the end, there had to be at least subtle signs or motivation of the turn throughout the season. Then we get to Max. I have friends who believe Max was mindwarped into loving her and impregnating her. I personally don't buy into that because that would be #10 and probably the most egregiously far fetched of the 10. Was he easily manipulated and in a weak minded state because of everything with Liz? Absolutely, but he took her to pound town of his own free will. She only mindwarped him to see a dying fetus as part of the mainpulation. And then there's this aspect that I've only thought of in the last year or 2. Let's say hypothetically everything did go according to plan - Alex doesn't die from the mindwarp and Tess does get knocked up. How the hell does Tess introduce the idea of getting the 4 of them to go home? "Hey Max check it out. It's the translation of the book, it says the Granilith is a 1 way flight. I found it on Yahoo!" PS - One of my favorite musical subtleties lost is in this episode Coldplay Trouble playing when they blow up the jeep on their way to leave. The haunting piano at the start, the drum kicking in just as the jeep explodes. Then the subtle double entendres or pun-ability of the following lyrics – “oh no what’s this” as Max and Valenti hug – stark contrast to where they were in the Season 1 finale; “spider web and I’m caught in the middle, so I turn to run” as Max walks toward the rest of the Pod Squad; “the thought of all the stupid things I’ve done” as Max puts his arm around Tess; and then Chris Martin’s pain in the lyric “I never meant to cause you trouble” as they switch to a wide shot of the aliens walking away and finally “I never meant to do you wrong” as we cut to Liz lying on Maria’s bed. PPS - I learned maybe 5 years ago the song used when Isabel visits Alex's grave and dances with Ghost Alex is referred to as "Clark and Chloe's song" as it's the song Remy Zero sings in the season 1 finale of Smallville which aired a full year after this episode so is it really their song? I'm still looking for this particular version of the song which is much more raw and acoustic as opposed to the standard version which is readily available. PPPS - So that was Emilie giving the speech at the end and not Tess?

Teasing this dirty old man that it is too hot to wear the dress (that's what I heard, not sure what you actually said) now in the 45cm of snow we are going to get tonight, that image keeps me warn. btw, say the word and dirty old man mode will be switched off in the future.

I think I was more receptive to this episode because I never liked or trusted Tess. She always seemed shady to me. I got accidently spoiled on her about a month ago but I haven't trusted her since she first came on the show. I like what they did with Michael and Maria, especially Michael deciding not to leave, that was a nice twist on his character. I don't get why they blew up their car. I bet they regret THAT now.

Approaching 1/2 hour and we're still on the comments. So this is my life now reacting to people watching shows I've already watched and commenting on the comments:) actually there is no complaint here the comments this week are entertaining as hell. Not sure how it feels for you and shouldn't make fun of mental illness but watching you being able to almost see t you bouncing off the inside of your skull was more entertaining I'm sure then the episode I still have not watched you react. And they're bringing me my lunch now so I'm still not gonna get to it right away. In case it doesn't come across I appreciate your efforts and enjoy your nuttiness. You've made me laugh this morning.

She does enjoy a good dump every now and then.

It's finally happened I'm gonna comment on the comment. A meta comment if you will. But we are in the subject I know something about. So back to you talking about VR from the previous episode. While VR did not truly exist on home PC's there had been for a decade or so arcade games that offered a very blocky play environment that was immersive. What was shown on the screen in Roswell would have been a fairly logical extrapolation of the technology. Also it had been portrayed this way in several movies by that time. It was fairly realistic for the time period and one of the less laughable parts of that sequence. A computer that understood unformatted English was far more laughable for the time not to mention the memory full override that still has me giggling now. OK I'm gonna go watch this latest reaction now. By the way last week I joked about you potentially dumping 17 episodes on us at once and today I want to find that you had dumped 12 episodes on me over the night.
