This show followed the "feel' of Superman from the comics. Much more ACA, family friendly. While they did some changes, the always good vs always bad guy feel of the original comics is there.
Smallville is really more of a Superboy story with a modern darker twist.
One thing they changed from the comics is Perry White's obsession with Elvis Presley. He went from "Great Caesar's ghost!" to "Great shades of Elvis" lol. Even SUperman can't compete with the King.

It's no Smallville... but I watched this on TV when it first aired.
I loved it then, and still love it now ... if not quite as much as I used to.
I think this was a more family oriented version ... whereas Smallville was oriented to a slightly more mature crowd!

I never watched this show. Honestly, after watching the reactions you did thus far, I can say that I wasn't really missing much. The only 2 casting choices I like are Perry and Lois. Oh and Lucy is hella cute. But other than that, the rest of the cast just doesn't seem to fit the characters. Also, the effects are really dated. Smallville and Superman & Lois really did spoil us.
I know they recast Jimmy in season 2. Maybe the new actor was better but I doubt it made much of a difference, since he is a minor character.
They also aren't really going for things that Superman fans would be hoping to see. It's like they said let's do a drama series but Superman is an afterthought. You have your typical office rivalry, will they won't they between Clark and Lois, with Cat trying to compete and a corporate businessman villain in Lex. Just too many tropes and not good ones when doing a series about a character that is so well known and beloved when it comes to the comic book world.
Maybe later in the series, they delve more into the overall lore of Supes and introduce more known allies and villains but for now, they seem to be keeping it contained. It is only 4 episodes so far, so who knows.

Lois and Clark was definitely a product of its time. I've always liked Jonathan and Martha being alive and part of series. The Kents have been alive in the comics since Crisis on Infinite Earths back in the 80s (save for a brief period after the New 52, but that didn't last).
As a kid, I didn't know Lex Luthor was supposed to be bald, so Lex having hair in this series never seemed odd to me.
Cat is probably the most 90s character; if she isn't career focused, a homemaker, then she had to be sex starved and into everything. Oddly enough, I thought she looked most attractive when she changed into the sweats in the previous episode.

I watched this show as a kid. This episode definitely always stands out in my memory, with Lex testing Superman's abilities and then especially the response of Superman actually firing the gun at Lex to prove how fast he is. Like, no matter how fast Superman knows he is, Lex had no idea he'd catch it and just watched a gun be shot at him.
I don't disagree that on the whole, the pacing of this episode could have been a little bit better. They could have done less exposition (they loved exposition back in the 90s), with Lex and his lackeys talking about testing Superman and cut straight to the chase; so that Superman and Lex can have a confrontation early enough on as to set up Clark not being Superman for more of the episode. Plus, episode 4 was much too early to have Clark or the public ponder the a world without a Superman. He'd been active for like, a month.
Likewise, the whole subplot with Lois chasing Superman leads....was definitely a choice. It's a little disappointing being reminded how obsessed they made her. I didn't mind so much Clark using that against her, but there again they could have set that up much quicker and, rather than necessarily tell us up front what Clark was doing, let it unfold and let us in at the end; and have him orchestrate things like, steering the crazy her guy her way and getting him to follow him to his apartment be part of that.
It was strange seering Larry Linville (Frank Burns) from MASH in a bit role (as the crazy guy saying there were a bunch of freeze dried aliens in a ship).

I bought this one! After the pilot there was volumes of TNAOS and this was volume one, I think the scene where Lois is explaining to Clark what’s the point of superman really hooked me as an adolescent.
Oh and it was 3 days (in show) 5 minutes for us, I remember the show being safe family friendly entertainment every generation had their superman wether it was Christopher reeves or George reeves the whole family could speculate on how they get a man to fly.
