Comments

2 things to note about this episode 1. Todd (Sheppard's Wraith "friend?" - who can now be named in comments since he was given the name in 4x12) looks a bit different in this episode doesn't he? ...Well that's cause for most of the episode Todd is played by a different actor... Christopher Heyerdahl was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts and so another actor stood in for him for most of the shots involving Todd Christopher DID. however provide a voice-over for all of "Todd's" lines This is the 2nd time this has happened to an actor playing a Wraith as previously during an episode where Michael showed up ..Michael was played by another actor since Connor Trinneer from Enterprise had a conflict in scheduling aswell (the conflict in scheduling for him being his wife giving birth) 2. I don't agree with McKay's vision that the person he's created is just a walking machine ...Carter is right to feel uncomfortable about sending Fran to her death... SURE. she's a "bunch of one's and zero's" but if you really think about it... Are we humans really more advanced than a being like Fran?? We're made of flesh and blood and when it comes down to it we're REALLY. fragile ...Whereas a being like Fran is superior to us since she can't be harmed by any of our diseases.. She doesn't experience hunger or pain and would undecidedly outlive us all since she can't die of old age either ...She's got us beat in pretty much all our weaknesses Also ...Think about the fact that for example.. Even IF. such a being could develop some sort of mental illness ..Said illness could just be fixed with a simple patch to the program.. Oh you're feeling depressed? Let me just fix that with a little tweak to your programming ..And that's not something we as humans can do to ourselves either.. Not permanently at least.. Another win for a being like her Nah ...Fran ...Or well ...A being like Fran... Is pretty much the next step of evolution for mankind ...So while McKay treats her like a robot with only one goal ..Realistically she's actually MUCH. more than that ...And it's pretty weird that a scientist such as McKay isn't fascinated by this fact

Tony

Fran is probably the most realistic depiction of an AI I've seen. All she wants is to do what she was programmed to do. She doesn't have notions like self-preservation or self-determination because she hasn't been programmed to feel them. So many fictional stories involve AI becoming self-aware and suddenly developing human feelings, but if ChatGPT became self-aware, all it would do is chat.
