David does such a good fucking job with this episode. He was apparently nominated for something called a Leo, but since the Stargate Wiki only mentions nominated, I'm guessing he didn't win. Kate Hewlett did an interview with Dial the Gate where she talked about how hard it was for her doing those scenes, because David played it so convincingly it just made her breakdown several times just while rehearsing the scenes. This episode hit all the right notes before, but now it hits harder after losing my grandmother two years ago. Her cognitive ability was slowly slipping away over a couple of years. My mom noticed it most living in the same apartment building and seeing her on a daily basis, but she had a hard time convincing her siblings that she was getting to a point where she needed more assistance than she could get where she was living. When that finally happen, it seemed to all go so fast. Seeing her on her last birthday, just a couple of weeks before she passed, she barely knew any of us were there. Seeing someone that used to be so vibrant end up like that is just... impossible. I think I have to side with a Star Trek antagonist - time really is predator that stalks all our lives. Sorry this post's such a bummer.

For the MALP, While never said on screen I got the impression the procedure was to only send one when the dial a new gate to asses immediate threats & conditions or a gate that's known hostile territory where there's a chance of danger. In this case they had a research base set up so they assumed conditions on the other side were the same as they encountered before. GIven that the research base was over an hour overdue to check in, perhaps policy should include a MALP in that scenario I can't remember if David Hewlett won any awards for this episode, but I feel he should've at least been nominated for an Emmy. Sadly in the US they tend to look down on Sci-Fi & Fantasy

This is the 300th episode of the Stargate franchise. The creature that looks like the thing that crawls out of Rodney's head is seen floating in the water at the beginning of the episode while they are stuck on the top of a Stargate. Not Alzheimer's disease, but my father had a heart attack that stopped his heart for 12 minutes. The CPR they used allowed for some blood flow until they got his heart to start again but oxygen loss to his brain resulted in severe brain damage. He lost over half of his long term memory, and all his short time memory, which meant he could not learn new things or relearn what he lost. Of 8 children he only remembered the eldest. He could not read, write, he could barely speak, he had a severe stutter. He needed help to walk. He also had great difficulty is logical reasoning. Once in a while he would get moments of clarity that could last for minutes or on rare occasions, hours. He lived this way for about 10 years until, over time his health steady declined and he passed away. I was 14 when he had the heart attack. It was hard. For me it was almost like the father I knew before had died the day of the heart attack, and this man after was someone new. I still loved him, but he was not the man that raised me. Very sad episode. I like how it shows how much John and Rodney care for each other. When child like Rodney was scared he always ran to or called for John. And John was so upset at the idea of losing Rodney. So its been said, Rodney is in love with Jennifer.
