The Allure of Wanton Cove art breakdown:

I was going to wait until next week before doing another art breakdown, but since we got a couple of new additions to our community at this level, I wanted to take a little time to share one of our features.

Today we will be breaking down the Madness ending.  I know that the piece is a little on the old side at this point in time, but I've never done a proper breakdown of the piece yet, so here goes!

When we originally talked about this piece, I told the artist that I thought it would be neat to view the scene through the window in the door.  The character in the corner conveying both helplessness and madness.  I also wanted some shadowy tentacles reaching out towards the character but to make sure they were subtle.  I wanted to be able to see a bit of the doctor's hand near the sliding window, but after trying to do so the artist said that the hand takes the focus off of the image and didn't look real well.  I trusted his judgement in the matter and let them continue.  This is the concept sketch I received.  I liked it and told them to continue.

This second piece is a more detailed sketched based off of the original.  We spent a little time discussing straight jackets from the time and the colors we wanted for the door in the image. Given the nature of what we were aiming for, we felt that a simple metal would serve to keep the focus on the view through the window.

This was the first inking I received.  I liked it, but at the same time I had a couple of small issues with it.  The first was the color of the door.  I asked the artist to darken the door a bit as I felt it was light enough that it was pulling attention from the window.  I also emphasized that I wanted the tentacles to be more subtle.

The final version darkened the door a little, made the tentacles more subtle, and changed the angle of the tentacles.  I thought that those few little changes made a huge difference in the final version.

Hope that all of you have enjoyed a new art breakdown!    I know that this time it was an older piece, but rest assured I've got several more pieces to be done, a couple of them are pieces that haven't yet appeared in the game, and others are some of the earlier work that was done for the game.  Also, I'll be continuing to commission new work as I'm able to afford to do so, and will continue to share new art at about one a week for the foreseeable future!

Next up will be the portraits done for Azumi and Tanya!
