Interest check for contest.

If you're here reading this, I'm going to guess that you've already played Inheritance.  If not, look up the most recent build and check it out.

Normally, I would try to keep Polls exclusive to Patrons.  In this case, I figure more exposure results in the potential for more entries when the time comes as well as more discussion which will hopefully result in a better contest when I put together the rules and post it.

I'm considering the possibility of running regular contests for Inheritance to generate content for the game.  I wanted to run some ideas past the community and gauge interest.

First off, how many of you would be interested in contributing to a contest related to the game Inheritance?  Second, how many people would be interested in following such a contest?

Next, the subject matter:  For the contests, I would plan to do them a little vague as far as subject matter.  Maybe make it about events for a holiday, events inside the house, outside the house, work related events, evening scenes, about one girl or the other,  etc.  I figure that by keeping the subject matter a little vague, it allows potential contributors more freedom in the kinds of content they can create.

Plans for a first contest:

-Would plan to announce the first contest either early this coming month, or early January.

-There would be no specific theme for the first contest, but it WOULD need to take place inside the house and include one or both girls.

-I would be sitting aside $100 in Patreon funds for prizes with the top six entries receiving a cash prize. (I'm tentatively thinking $50/25/10/5/5/5, but that's subject to change)

Rules:

-Scenes would need to include at least two branching points, and need to take into account a range of relationship values. (More details when I release an official thread for the contest.)

-Patrons would vote for the winner of the contest and the results would be posted in the contest thread.

-I'd like to encourage more branches for entries, so there will likely be a small multiplier related to the vote totals (Am thinking about asking for High/Mid/Low related to relationships minimum, then adding a .1 multiplier if the writer branches it to 5 instead of three levels, or a .25 multiplier if the writer branches it to 10.  Maybe stacking a .1 multiplier to the count for additional branching points as well.  Will see what people's thoughts are and finalize things a bit before the contest is officially opened.)

-Any contest entry used in the game would be credited to the author who actually wrote it.

That should give enough information that anyone tentatively interested in contributing can start planning their contribution if they want to get a head start.  Just dont send me your entries until I've officially opened the contest.

What I'd like from all of you:

-Vote in the poll on this thread.  This will give me a better idea of how much interest there is in this kind of contest.

-Comment below sharing your initial thoughts on the contest idea.  Do you want more information?  Do you want to share ideas?  Comment about concerns?  Anything else?

PS:  I promise, I'm done making new posts for the day.  ;)

Fair enough. Wanton Cove is still in active development, and will likely remain so for quite some time to come. While the main narrative is nearing completion, I DO have several side stories I still want to explore. So long as there seems to be interest in seeing more Wanton Cove, I'll continue to work within that setting. After all, Inheritance is intended to be a lighter natured game intended to create a balance between it and the darkness of Wanton Cove, not to replace Wanton Cove. At present, the MINIMUM of what I want to accomplish still with Wanton Cove involves: Finish the main narrative (Getting close on that one), work through a host of improvements that I have in my backlog (Everything from expanding existing content through additional skill checks, to adding new scenes in a few places to flesh out areas of the game's content), got a minimum of three more NPCs I still want to add to the game, got a list of maybe +20 ambient scenes of an interactive nature (White Goo scenes and the such) that I still want to write and add, plus there are three major side stories I have every intention of writing before I declare the game complete. If there's interest after that, then I have about that much more content planned that I'd like to explore, but that is not quite as pivotal to the "completion" of the game. This poll is related to Inheritance and a writing competition intended to generate interest and content for that game. (If there is interest, I may consider doing a similar contest for Wanton Cove in the future as well.)

This is something I would pull my patreon support from. I understand the need for more supporters, but my main support is for wanton cove, that is what brought me here, and the themes to inheritance is not what I support.

That's wonderful news. I hope that you are able to contribute. From what I am seeing in response to this post, and my posts about this elsewhere, its looking like there's quite a bit of interest in doing something like this. As such, I'm doing the ground work now to set up a competition starting this weekend with plans to let it run two months. I'm picturing this as a trial run, if there's a good turn out and we receive some good quality submissions, then I'd like to run contests regularly. (Or as regularly as we can. If people struggle to get submissions in on time, then the next one might be three months, but if people respond quickly, then I'll likely shorten the time. I'd be willing to do a contest like this as often as once a month.)

Could well be interested in writing something, depending on when the contest runs and free time, if not writing then def folllowing

My plan is to do payments through PayPal or Amazon gift card. I could look into Steam vouchers as well. Thanks for the idea. ;)

Aftermath Team

Personally I'm not sure cash would be the best way forward, you can get into slightly dodgy tax territory depending on where you are. offer Steam vouchers or just a credit in the game.

Niburi Team

Fair enough! Right now, I'm checking for interest, but from the number or people who have replied both here and elsewhere, its looking like there is plenty of interest in doing a contest like this.

Aftermath Team

I would not be interested in contributing, but I WOULD like to follow it. ╘[◉﹃◉]╕

Some form of design document is one of the things I hope to accomplish before opening the contest. When I officially open the contest, I'll be sure to present a sample scene to show how scenes are set up and a list of characteristics that are tracked within the game so that people have something to use as reference. If you guys want to add new variables/switches, that should be fine. Just indicate where it would be then I'll code it on my end when the time comes. Body mutilation like loosing a limb or eye is beyond the current scope of the code. Got to get working on Wanton Cove this morning, but if I can knock one of the two big scenes off my to-do list for the week, I'll start working on the official rules and guide for the competition. Goal is to have the official rules and all of that ready by the end of this week with the intention of starting the contest over the weekend and running it for two months.

Aftermath Team

I might be tempted to enter, but I imagine I would feel more comfortable if there was a design document to answer questions like (i) what checks can be called (ii) whether we can specify new variables/switches if needed (iii) hard and soft limits on content (i.e. can we have a branch where a sister loses an eye?) (iv) etc. I think knowing more about what can be messed with and how would give me a better idea what I might do, if anything. Interesting idea all around, though!

There's no reason you wouldn't be able to put those earnings towards Patreon status if you would like. That said, I actually planned to give a free Cheat build out to everyone who posts an entry. I'll take care of the coding on my end unless someone REALLY wanted to do the coding. Simply marking each branch clearly would be fine. Something along the lines of: Start: Content goes here Continue: Go Left Continue: Go Right Go Left: Content goes here Go Right: Content goes here Etc.

Aftermath Team

Instead of cash can we earn patreon backer status? I am flat broke through January, and likely to return to that point a few times. I have some ideas for branching stories, but had a question on what level of implementation you wanted? Would a Google Doc or Word Doc with each branch marked A1 B1 A2 A3 (ending 1) B2 B2-A B2-B B2-A1 B2-B1 B2-A2 (ending 2) etc for each branch be enough or do we have to code it? I am pants at coding- so it's important to know that going in.
