Paper Doll Art samples.
Added 2018-02-23 04:20:05 +0000 UTCBeen dropping the ball on this front recently, so I want to try making up for that at least a little bit now.
I've got far too much art to share in a single post, but on that note, I think a few pieces along with an explanation of how the art will be used, will be more efficient here anyway.
This first image I'm showing for context. It shows a complete face which is where we're going to start today.

Now, the head will have a lot going on, likely one of the more complicated elements of the paper doll system.
Now, your first thought would be that the head will be the bottom layer, but that's actually incorrect. With how the paper doll system will work we actually have to consider anything that will be behind the head that may become visible with different head shapes. As such, we begin with the the first of two layers of hair.
Hair will be done in two layers. Front and back. The back layer is behind the head.
Not only does this two layer system work very efficiently for this, but it also allows for just a little more mix and matching using the front and back portions to diversify the hair options.

Now, we'll get back to the front layer of hair since that's the last item going on the head.
The next layer is the head itself. In this case, we have what will become six different head shapes, (There's not a lot of visual diversity at the moment, but as detail is added it will further diversify them.
The heads:

This next part all kind of comes together, but are actually separate elements. The eyes nose and mouth are all separate elements that can be mix and matched to create differing faces (And there are plans to commission additional sets to further diversify the range of options in the future. This is after all just a proof of concept phase of this.)
Eyes, first sketches:

This first set I actually rejected since I felt they were not diverse enough.
This is the eyes revisions:

Then the nose options:

And then the mouths:

And finally the front layer of hair which would appear over the other elements:

In case some of you are confused as to what you're looking at, I'll walk you through how all of what you see above will come together.
Start by selecting a rear hair option. Place your preferred head shape on top of that. Mix and match eyes, nose, and mouth to taste, then place the front hair layer on top. It will all come together into a single image and by mixing and matching elements we will be able to create a wide range of characters with a minimum of cost. (And in case you are wondering, other body elements and clothing will be something you can mix and match as well.) If done right, then every image will be able to be layered flawlessly in order to create a single image.
Right now, we're putting together two body builds and two skin tones for each body build. Combine that with a host of hair colors, eye colors, etc and we have a good range of options to create unique characters. Once the proof of concept version of the paper doll system is functioning correctly, I'll be commissioning additional body builds, skin tones, facial features, etc. (Each facial option will come in a range of emotions)
And a little teaser you may all get a kick out of, an accessory:

And there you have my first art dump related to the paper doll content! I posted more than I had originally planned, but you guys are worth it. ;)
I should be able to do a similar sized dump related to body and another for clothes with what I'm currently sitting on. I'll try to roll out the next bundle next week.
