Discord pings

So, in the past I've given this no real thought on the grounds that I had no complaints, and the couple of people who HAD commented on the topic had expressed that they like the function.

Last night we had an issue where someone pinged @everyone to announce a short story related to Inheritance.  In response to this, a couple of people expressed their displeasure at being pinged.  In all honesty, it's an issue I had never put much thought into and never saw it as a problem (Especially in this case where I felt it was something of interest related one of our projects), and I personally ping our Discord community to announce game updates and when I am looking for some quick feedback on something and don't want to take the time to set up a poll.

My question for all of you becomes, should this be a feature we restrict to certain people,?  If restricted who should it be restricted to?  Or should the feature be completely restricted so that no one, even myself, can ping the community?

Usually I limit polls to Patrons, but in this case I'm going to post this for everyone both for the better sampling and to bring a bit of awareness to our Discord.

And for those of you have have not found the Discord, everyone is welcome to join!  https://discordapp.com/invite/wm6SGjD

Right now, when I try to post to everyone like that, it warns me it's going out to more than 400 people. So we've got a modest little community. In all the time we've had the channel, I doubt that function has been used more than maybe twenty times, and the vast majority of those have been me. We don't really have a problem, but with a growing community it could easily become so. Looking at the poll numbers right now, I'm thinking we'll end up restricting it to members in some context.

I'm not a member of the Discord channel, but... I can't help but think, it would be best ,if it was restricted for the Aftermath team.

Thanks. It's been going way too slowly the last couple months, but I'm working on getting back into things πŸ˜€

Just peeked over at your own project, looks nice. Jules is adorable, and Karen is cute as a button. I'll be keeping an eye on your work, looks like you could have the start of something pretty special.

Exactly. This is about figuring out what balance is right for us as a community. It's far too early in the poll to say where it's going to end up in the end, but for the moment at least it looks like people want the pings, just to limit it to team members, or possibly people who contribute to the game. I was just telling one of our team members that we'd take a look at the poll in about a day and it should give us a much better idea of what people want. ;)

By all means, having @everyone open to all invites abuse, I'm just saying there are plenty of thing the user can do as well, to avoid having noisy alerts show up

It's one of those things where it's never been a problem before, and we're a small enough community that we're still figuring things out with a lot of this. No one did anything wrong, but I felt it was worth addressing just so we have a guideline for how to handle it in the future. I lay this one down to growing pains.

I don't really care that much. If it's an issue for someone, they can turn off the notifications they get from the channel. My 2 Β’ is that the morons that complain don't know how to use the software.
