Hardcore History EP 62 Supernova in the East I
Added 2018-07-14 23:39:27 +0000 UTCThe Asia-Pacific War of 1937-1945 has deep roots. It also involves a Japanese society that's been called one of the most distinctive on Earth. If there were a Japanese version of Captain America, this would be his origin story.

2018-08-31 21:53:01 +0000 UTCLoved your podcast. I am now reading “Hell to Pay” about Operation Downfall. Most thorough book I have ever seen on the subject and just more than a little depressing — particularly as my Father was slated for this invasion. There is a YouTube interview on this book ar

2018-08-31 21:52:06 +0000 UTCAn interesting topic that this program touches on is how did China achieve the shape and territory we see on the world map today? The answer isn't so clearly rooted in geography as it is for Japan--I'm a big fan of China Marches West by Peter Perdue if you ever have the time to read for pleasure, or if you ever consider taking it up as a topic for another program: http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674057432

2018-08-12 12:36:28 +0000 UTCI hope you live to 120 Dan, and perhaps produce clones to keep production up. :) I get withdrawals after 3 days of listening so it's a hard 359 days per year to get through
2018-07-24 09:50:41 +0000 UTCThanks Dan. Another excellent offering and a great choice for the next project. I can't wait for the next installment.
2018-07-24 08:35:27 +0000 UTCThis episode was simply amazing. I started listening on my day off (today) while hiking and kept listening to the end - through driving, showering, eating, doing laundry, cleaning my office, uploading photos taken while hiking, and finally just sitting engrossed. Now, I have to wait for part 2? I didn't even know I wanted to know all this.
2018-07-18 05:15:04 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed this episode and am starting my second listen-through. Thanks, Dan!

2018-07-17 23:54:29 +0000 UTCAnother book recommendation. The Rising Sun by John Toland is really good. It gives more a high level view from the February 26th Incident to just after the war. The Knights of Bushido by Lord Russel of Liverpool (I wish I had a name as cool as that) is a good accounting, if rather outdated, of Japanese war crimes.
2018-07-15 12:09:41 +0000 UTCExcited to hear this one! For those interested in this period of time in Japan, I can recommend one of my favourite movies (it is also a book) called "In This Corner of the World." It's about a Japanese family, and one girl in particular, who live in Kure, Japan in the build-up to, and throughout, the war. It's beautifully made, and gives a good insight into the attitudes of people in Japan at that time, etc.
