In this bonus episode, Matt takes Sam on a tour of his native state, Pennsylvania, where a number of key primaries were held this week. The results brought some hopeful news: Lt. Gov. John Fetterman handily defeated State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and (even better) Manchin-backed moderate Rep. Conor Lamb in the contest for the Democratic senate nomination. But it also revealed the madness that continues to grip the GOP: State Sen. Doug Mastriano, a January 6 marcher and election-fraud true believer, will be running for governor in November, and Dr. Oz, as of this writing, was clinging to a narrow lead in the race to take on Fetterman. Don't worry, though, it's not all punditry: the cuisines, strange regional dialects, and curious folkways of the virtuous commonwealth also are discussed. Then the episode turns to the fortunes of the Thiel tools: J.D. Vance and Blake Masters, both of whom are running for the Senate (Vance in Ohio and Masters in Arizona). The former won the Republican nod, and in come-from-behind fashion—how did he do it, especially after months of woke pundits dismissing his campaign? And what are Masters chances in August, when the Arizona GOP primary will be held?

Is Fetterman actually a conservative with working class sympathies?

I'm from Erie, PA (now Charlottesville) and love Sheetz, but had never heard of "matt" or "mat" food? The food that falls onto the mats of our tucks? Thanks for enlightening me!

Does anyone have any more useful "audio" information on Albert O. Hirschman? I remember the previous podcast about the The Rhetoric of Reaction book, and Sam in this episode (talking Masters) mentioned the Exit, Voice, and Loyalty book, and I am seeing from wikipedia the Exit, Voice, Loyalty, Neglect (EVLN) model. Pretty much I am asking for an episode on this subject, and I understand that may not be possible and I hope for a good Lodestone to direct my path. Thanks Matt and Sam 🙂

Really enjoyed this rank punditry about PA politics. Hopefully our fearless co-hosts enjoyed an Iron City and Altoona pizza in lieu of their traditional Buffalo Trace and Camel cigarettes while recording.

Another fun part about Sheetz is you can get anything in the store from the drive through. A friend ordered a gallon of chocolate milk while getting a sandwich.

I hereby request from Matt in a future episode the pronunciation of the following words: “roof”, “bury”, and “Lancaster”. Also I would like to know if the sentences “the house needs painted” and “what kind of Coke do you want?” make sense to him.

Fetterman seems to want to do things many unsuccessful leftists don’t do. He has a schtick and he’s a realist about political power. We should embrace the fact that no one senator or politician can do everything right now. We have to build a new vision of what’s right for us and that doesn’t happen over night. Investing in people who are more likely take you there is the best we can do and that’s okay.

Love this episode so much. My parents are from Pittsburgh, and I was born there. "Red" was definitely a word I remember from my childhood, at this point my parents have lost their accents completely and I am only reminded of Yinzer phrasology when I talk to a cousin. I live in Chicago and the shorts-throughout-the-whole year male is a key demographic here as well.

You got it!

Know Your Enemy

I live in AZ and we're being bombarded with Repubs running for Senate and the governorship, and besides attacking each other they are focusing on the border. They complain about Biden's non-existing "open borders" policy and describe the migrants as criminals while they show snap shots of "the invasion" and crime, etc. This kind of fear mongering is common for conservatives here but they're really going all out and it feels like a constant barrage. It's really dark and very dangerous. On the positive side, Mark Kelly's adds are all positive and inspirational. What a contrast! Thanks for the bonus episode. I enjoyed it. It was a little ray of sunshine in an otherwise grim picture.

Marty Qually would be a good guy to talk to, at least when it comes to the intersection of Dominionism and PA politics. The one flash of blue in all of PA-33, and a real ground level guy.

I’m in Lambs district + live in his hometown and think that even here it was at best a 50/50 split between Lamb and Fetterman yard signs

I'd love an episode about dominionism/"Christian nationalism"! It seems long overdue, but on the other hand would probably be one of the darker episodes of the pod, even including the ones on fascism. A discussion, even a brief one, of where you two think this is all heading would be cathartic too. Almost everyone I talk to has the same feeling of immobilization, waiting for a blade to fall.

If Matt takes Sam shooting we need pictures.

I'm fully aware I'm over simplifying here.

This guy Fetterman sounds great, but the Pro Fracking (yikes). Can someone win in Penn and be pro-Labour and anti Fracking? What does that look like, does the schtick fail the "smell test" then if he's concerned with water & climate? This is a problem Labour is having in Europe.

Blocked and reported!

Wawa > Sheetz. I said what I said.

Lived in Gettysburg for a couple decades and I remember when Mastriano hit the local scene. I've been out for a decade and I'm still amazed how high he's climbed. I never thought the Dominionists would succeed in statewide elections, even for the GOP. PA local politics is...unique.
